Police fire tear gas as
demonstrations become chaotic

CBS News, by Staff

Demonstrators and police were locked in a confrontation late Monday as tear gas was fired at crowds who reportedly refused to disperse from the streets of Ferguson, Missouri. Tactical units and armored vehicles began to move in as the situation deteriorated. Sheriff´s deputies in body armor and state troopers carrying wooden bats and gas masks stood watch over the group. The streets of Ferguson remained crowded and active with few incidents through the day on Monday. By sundown, more protests began to take place and larger crowds began to gather, attracting more police presence. As midnight closed in a scene of

I wonder what would happen if news crews and police left this mess and just let the "protesters" and activists fight it out. If no one paid attention to them, there would be no reason to keep showing up.

Like #1, I also wonder what the "protests" would look like if there were no cops and especially no media. I envision groups of people in matching t-shirts wandering around, searching in vain for a TV van or reporter until they finally get tired and loot a liquor store on the way home. Or try to loot a liquor store but encounter a heavily armed store owner and decide it´s not worth it.

The 2016 Republican dark horses

As the 2016 White House race begins to form, more than a few dark horse GOP candidates could end up breaking away from the pack. With the Republican presidential field wide open, the campaign could be a repeat 2012, when even candidates thought to be longshots briefly stole the spotlight and spiked in the polls. “We don´t even have anywhere near a front-runner and it doesn´t look like one is going to break free,” said GOP strategist Ford O’Connell. “There´s a potential opening for a lot of these wild-card candidates.” Republican National Committee rules have changed since then, shrinking the debate schedule that

Obama on golfing optics:

President Obama said he was near tears while talking to the parents of slain U.S. journalist James Foley, and he appeared to express some misgivings about his decision to play golf minutes after delivering an angry public statement about Foley´s killing in Syria three weeks ago. "I should´ve anticipated the optics," Obama said in an appearance on NBC´s "Meet the Press" set to air Sunday. "Part of this job is also the theater of it," Obama said, adding that "it´s not something that always comes naturally to me. But it matters." Inside President Obama’s Decision

WASHINGTON — President Obama’s decision to delay executive action on immigration until after the November elections was the end result of weeks of back and forth within the Democratic Party, and fears the actions would damage the party’s election prospects. According to an activist familiar with details of the decision to delay the immigration announcement, Obama’s political advisers became concerned with internal polling in the last few weeks for a handful of states on the midterm elections. The polling for the vulnerable Democrats was so close — two points apart — that they were afraid the announcement could “put it over the

TV is increasingly for the old, and the Internet is for the young, according to new research by media analyst Michael Nathanson of Moffett Nathanson Research. The median age of a broadcast or cable television viewer during the 2013-2014 TV season was 44.4 years old, a 6 percent increase in age from four years earlier. Audiences for the major broadcast network shows are much older and aging even faster, with a median age of 53.9 years old, up 7 percent from four years ago. These television viewers are aging faster than the U.S. population, Nathanson points out. The median age in the

Thousands remained without power Saturday in the metro Detroit area after powerful thunderstorms the previous night that left one man dead and frightened others in its path. The man was killed in the Detroit suburb of Warren after being electrocuted by a fallen power line in his backyard, according to CNN affiliate WDIV-TV. The victim did not realize the wire was down, the TV station said. DTE Energy reported 230,000 customers without electricity as of 9 p.m. Saturday, down from 385,000 at the height of the outage. DONETSK, Ukraine -- Strong explosions were heard early Sunday on the outskirts of the main rebel-held city in eastern Ukraine near the airport, raising new fears that a cease-fire signed two days ago is on the verge of collapse. Blasts powerful enough to be heard in downtown Donetsk came from the area near the airport, which has been under the control of government troops since May and has come under unremitting attacks from pro-Russia separatist rebels since then. The cease-fire had appeared to be holding for much of the day on Saturday, but shelling started late at night. A rebel statement said

Barack Obama has always been good with words, but he’s not good enough to give coherence to his ramshackle foreign policy. Not surprisingly words have failed the president (or, to be more accurate, the president has failed words) most conspicuously when it comes to the aspect of his policy that’s in greatest disarray — his policy regarding terrorism. First, Obama admitted that he didn’t have a strategy for dealing with ISIS. On his next try, after initially stating that his objective is to degrade and destroy ISIS, Obama ended up saying that his goal was merely to reduce it to

South Floridians, lock up your wives, daughters, mothers, sisters, aunts. Billy-Bob Clinton is coming to town. Our former groper-in-chief and lifetime Democrat will be in Miami Friday evening to give a campaign speech for rookie Democrat Charlie Crist. Crist is, to borrow a phrase attributed to the late Hubert Humphrey, pleased as punch to have the former boy-president campaign for him. “I’m over the moon,” Crist said. (I’ve always suspected this of Charlie.) Crist, Florida’s former Republican governor, who wants to become Florida’s next Democrat governor, wasn’t always so giddy about the man from Hope (Arkansas, that is). In 1998, about a

NATO’s leaders went into this year’s conference in Wales hoping to raise their defense spending to 2% of GDP. This figure has been an official alliance target since 2002, but one mostly honored in the breach: only four members (the US, UK, Greece, and Estonia) of the 28-country alliance hit it this year, and one of them, the UK, is set to drop below it by 2015 due to budget cuts. This year, NATO diplomats sought to enact a binding agreement between the member nations to raise their military budgets. What came of that resolve? A commitment to freeze further defense

Boeing is building a laser cannon for the U.S. Army, and the new weapon has now proved it will be as capable at sea as on land. The High Energy Laser Mobile Demonstrator (HEL MD)—basically a high-energy laser mounted on top of a big truck—was successfully used to blast some UAV drones and 60mm mortars out of the Florida sky earlier this year, Boeing announced Thursday. This test was done in a windy and foggy environment, an essential step to proving the technology is useful for naval deployment. The HEL MD used a 10-kilowatt laser—a much less powerful version of what

The U.S. economy created only 142,000 jobs in August, down from 212,000 in July, indicating the economy significantly slowed this summer. Job creation is well below the pace needed to reemploy all the workers displaced during the financial crisis—the economy is in crisis! Although official GDP estimates indicate the economy expanded in the second quarter at a torrid pace—4.2. percent—much of that was inventory build, as consumer spending continued to drag along at a nonplus pace and capital investment, especially in manufacturing, remains subpar.

Pause on a post with video, and it starts to play whether you clicked on it or not. However, Facebook says users can avoid that drain on their data consumption with just a few setting changes. The top Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee on Friday said new allegations that U.S. commandos were ordered to “stand down” during the 2012 attack in Benghazi, Libya, aren’t supported by findings from House and Senate investigators. The Internal Revenue Service has lost emails from five more employees who are part of congressional probes into the treatment of conservative groups that applied for tax-exempt status, the tax service disclosed Friday. The tax agency said in June that it could not locate an untold number of emails to and from Lois Lerner, who headed the IRS division that processes applications for tax-exempt status. The revelation set off a new round of investigations and congressional hearings. On Friday, the IRS issued a report to Congress saying the agency also lost emails from five other employees related to the probe,

Immigrant-rights groups reacted furiously Saturday after the White House made clear President Obama will not take unilateral action on immigration before November’s elections, nodding at the political realities of the issue as he punted on the key policy questions. With a number of key Senate races in GOP-leaning states, Democrats had feared that action now would anger voters and cost them control of the upper chamber, and had privately begged the White House to hold off on any move to halt deportations. But immigration activists said it’s the latest in a series of moves by Mr. Obama to shove their

Are you tired of being lied to yet? My guess is no... because Americans seem to have developed an infinite capacity for patience with a federal government that is increasingly mettlesome, mendacious and menacing.[SNIP] This last Friday night, an interview was aired which should convince American citizens once and for all that their government is not telling the truth about what happened in Libya two years ago. That’s been obvious to many of us for months, but despite the naming of a select committee by the U.S. House of Representatives to investigate what could have happened, what should have happened,
