Hillary Slippary

According to the New York Times’ Peter Baker, “In this summer of global tumult, the debate in Washington essentially boils down to two opposite positions: It is all President Obama’s fault, according to his critics; no, it is not, according to his supporters, because these are events beyond his control.” Mr. Baker entirely misses the point. The global tumult is, largely, Mr. Obama’s fault because he has so drastically reduced America’s influence that events are beyond his control. That has become so obvious that even Hillary Clinton understands. President Obama is extremely sensitive to criticism of his foreign policy, as one would

It is impossible to be critical of Obama´s foreign policy. No such policy exists.

It takes pathological ambition for Hillary! to try to separate herself from an inept foreign policy for which she was Obama´s chief implementer and counselor for four and a half years. Maybe she needs to take a walk on the beach with Bill. (Warning: The picture in the link below is more effective than Ipecac syrup in causing emesis. You have been forewarned.)

There’s plenty of evidence to support Chuck Todd’s conclusion, and not just on foreign policy, either. The new host of Meet the Press told the Morning Joe panel today that the new NBC/WSJ polling on issues shows that Obama really may be the second coming of Jimmy Carter … and that’s bad news for the Democrats:(Snip for video)Earlier, I wrote about the latest in the series of cratering poll numbers for Barack Obama and how it would impact his ability to restore confidence in his leadership. The NBC/WSJ poll numbers have more interesting data on domestic issues, especially in the

When President Obama sits down with congressional leaders this week to talk about fighting the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria — “ISIS” — they’ll probably not agree on anything, not even the proper name of the terrorist organization that now controls about one-third of Iraq and a larger part of Syria. The president insists on calling it “ISIL”, for “Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant.” The “Levant” — an archaic term — refers to the area off the Eastern Mediterranean Sea stretching from what is now Anatolia in Turkey, through Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, Israel and Egypt. By insisting on

Jim Webb could be Hillary Clinton´s worst nightmare. The former one-term Virginia senator and Vietnam War veteran is making sounds about running for president as a Democrat. He was in Iowa last month; a New Hampshire trip may be in the offing, and he´s giving a major speech at the National Press Club in two weeks. He seems an improbable candidate. He has taken illiberal positions, was President Ronald Reagan´s Navy secretary, has few relationships within the Democratic Party, and has no serious fundraising network. What he does possess is a long-held and forceful opposition to U.S. interventions in Iraq and Libya,

Remember the 2012 Republican presidential debate in which ABC´s George Stephanopoulos, seemingly out of nowhere, pressed Mitt Romney repeatedly for his views on contraception? After a contentious back-and-forth, a frustrated Romney declared, "Contraception, it´s working just fine, just leave it alone." In the 2014 midterms, Democratic candidates have taken up where Stephanopoulos left off, and they´re certainly not leaving contraception alone. In some key Senate races, Democrats have even charged that Republicans would "make birth control illegal." (That´s from Colorado Democratic Sen. Mark Udall, directed at GOP opponent Rep. Cory Gardner.) But now, instead of Romney´s

Civil rights leaders and community activists cheered when Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr. announced on Thursday that the Justice Department would be investigating the Ferguson Police Department for possible civil rights violations—a move prompted by the August 9 shooting death of an African-American teen at the hands of one of the St. Louis suburb’s white police officers. The reaction is understandable. The Justice Department’s civil rights division—which is investigating whether Ferguson’s police force engaged in a pattern and practice of abuses—has for decades been instrumental in pursuing justice in matters and places where local action would have been unlikely.

It´s back to school for most Americans, but for the kids over at State Department High School, it seems more like a permanent summer vacation. The world is unraveling. This summer has seen gruesome beheadings, a passenger plane shot out of the sky, civil war, genocide, an Ebola outbreak and more. And as the White House whiffs impotently at solutions to problems it has underestimated (and in some cases helped to create), the department charged with implementing our foreign policy is in a Twitter war with a cable news host. Seriously. Spokeswoman Marie Harf took to Twitter on Thursday to defend her

Labor Day This was an educational summer. We learned this summer that when terrorists kill Jews, that’s legitimate anger and frustration. When Jews defend themselves, that’s genocide. We learned that Europe, which Henry Ford called “that slaughterhouse of nations” or something similar, is still chock a block with anti-Semites who are wildly happy to join hands with the emerging Muslim majority in Europe to torture the Jews. We learned that the elite media, especially the New York Times, will turn on Israel and the Jews and seek to curry favor with the enemies of Jews and of America in any way they can.

As lawmakers return to Washington to continue the search for thousands of missing subpoenaed emails related to the Internal Revenue Service´s alleged targeting of conservative groups, questions abound. Among the most pressing is the fact that a Blackberry belonging to Lois Lerner, a former official at the center of the scandal, was wiped clean shortly after investigators started asking questions about her alleged role in the targeting of conservative groups applying for tax-exempt status. Despite the fact that this revelation first came to light in August, the IRS has yet explain why this was done. Considering her former role as chief of

Even the most forgiving judge of Barack Obama, one willing to overlook his preference for chipping onto the sunlit greens of Martha’s Vineyard rather than brooding in the fluorescent glare of the Situation Room, must admit that the President has sometimes been a thick-tongued steward of his own foreign policy. How did the author of “A More Perfect Union” become the author of “The world has always been messy”? Obama, who prides himself on late-night preparation, unshakable rationality, and a writerly ear, is compiling an anthology of botched pronouncements that have, at best, muddied his intentions.

If you´re wondering why America´s political leaders seem so hesitant to devise a response to the frightening rise of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, let me tell you a story. It´s about the neocons and liberal hawks who cried wolf. Once upon a time, some foreign-policy hands warned that unless the United States invaded Iraq, Islamic radicals — the kind who murdered thousands of Americans on 9/11 — would obtain weapons of mass destruction. During the hunt for Osama bin Laden, they warned against losing sight of the danger of a possibly nuclear-armed Iraq. "[T]he larger campaign must also go

If the Republican Party adopts a clear, optimistic, growth-and-reform message to turn America around, it can win big in November. It could still be a wave election. But so far it hasn´t done it. The party is essentially asking voters to give it control of both houses of Congress. Yet it hasn´t told voters what it would do with such a mandate. That´s why the GOP must present a true governing agenda. You can´t ask for two-house support without telling voters what you´re going to do with it. Well, let’s round out the week by examining another macro trend that will shape the 2014 campaign. The right direction/wrong track question is a staple in U.S. political polling.According to the latest George Washington University Battleground poll, 70 percent of voters think that things in the United States have gotten off on the wrong track and that the country is headed in the wrong direction. It stands to reason that as a result, many Americans will vote against the Democrats.

She said she was inspired by the country´s former leader Nelson Mandela and that she had to act otherwise she would remain in a mental ´prison´ for the rest of her life. Qua speech, Barack Obama’s address Wednesday on the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria was surprisingly terrible: a disorganized mess, insincere and unconvincing. To appreciate just how bad and bizarre it was, compare the president’s speech announcing a new air campaign in Iraq and Syria to Dwight Eisenhower’s 1958 statement on his decision to intervene in Lebanon with 14,000—14,000!—troops. The statement contains no chest-thumping about America’s leadership in science and medicine. No pivot to the auto industry and medical research. Eisenhower simply explained what had been done, and why.

Even someone as savvy about everything as Michelle Obama sometimes flubs an outfit — or to put it more politely, wears something that doesn’t enhance her natural attractions. Which is not to say that’s all that matters about the first lady, who’s been busy with a variety of public events this week: registering voters in Georgia, cutting the ribbon on the renovated White House Visitors Center, commemorating the 9/11 terrorist attacks, even appearing in a videotaped shout-out to Prince Harry. Take a look at what she wore for all that. A little too full for her figure? (Photographs).. A flattering

His cynical grandstanding was rightly condemned — but he was hardly alone. Cruz agreed to speak to this group, which included bishops of the Catholic and Orthodox Churches, ostensibly out of solidarity, but took the occasion to antagonize them over their insufficient praise for Israel, then smeared them as anti-Semites before dropping the mic. The report by the California Attorney General´s office is the first time the data has been broken down according to race and income levels. Officials say such data is needed to address the problem. Poverty and suspensions are contributing factors. Overall, more than 250,000 elementary school students missed 10 percent or more of the 2013-2014 school year or roughly 18 or more school days. Check your hygiene privilege. Cabbies who smell badly are probably just oppressed folks who came directly from their terrorist training camp to the airport and didn’t have time to change. Body odour is among 52 criteria that officials at San Diego International Airport use to judge taxi drivers. Cabbies say that smacks of prejudice and discrimination. It does discriminate between cabbies who smell like an open sewer and those who don’t. It further prejudges what a good smell is.
