This 84-year-old woman

ZAKHO, Iraq — A little more than a week ago, 23-year-old Assad Haig’s life took a nightmarish turn. Islamic State (IS) militants captured 63 of his relatives, members of the persecuted Yazidi community, when the extremist fighters overran the northern Iraqi town of Sinjar. One of the militants notified Haig, who works in the Kurdish capital of Erbil, about the harrowing kidnapping spree by phone. Only two of Haig’s family members managed to evade capture — his father, who fled to Mount Sinjar, and his 84-year-old grandmother, who was left behind by the militants in the family home with the

I guess extremist Muslims never learned to respect their elders. Although safe at the moment, the woman´s fate looks bleak.

The Kansas Supreme Court Gives Democrats
What They Want—But the Fight May Not Be Over
National Review Online, by Hans Von Spakovsky    Original Article

Late yesterday, the Kansas supreme court granted the writ of mandamus filed by former Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Chad Taylor and ordered Kansas secretary of state Kris Kobach to remove Taylor’s name from the November ballot. But the controversy may not yet be over because of another writ filed by a Democratic voter. The court dismissed Kobach’s claim (explained in an earlier NRO post) that Taylor failed to comply with the state statute (K.S.A. 25-306b(b)) that requires a candidate who wants to withdraw to certify that “they are incapable of fulfilling the duties of office if elected.” Taylor sent a letter

Deval Patrick is one lucky hack. In most years, the bust-out governor of Massachusetts would be considered the absolute most incompetent politician in the United States, if not the world, hands down. But these days Deval couldn’t even get himself arrested, even though he certainly deserves to be, given his mis-, mal- and nonfeasance in office. Deval’s problem? When it comes to incompetence, and corruption, Barack Obama has sucked all of the air out of the room. His endless fiascoes have pushed every other pol’s scandals on the back pages. Deval’s arriving back in Massachusetts today after a vacation, I mean junket, I mean

Well, this ought to whet the appetites of certain journalists. Sarah Palin is among the confirmed speakers for the ninth annual Values Voters Summit next week in the nation’s capital. “Governor Palin has always been a steadfast supporter of natural marriage and every human’s right to life. She not only ‘talks the talk’ but also walks by her convictions. We are proud to stand with the Governor and are honored to have her presence, for the first time, at the Values Voter Summit,” says Tony Perkins, president of Family Research Council Action, organizer of the big doings. There they go again. The New York Times Book Review, which has a history of belatedly recognizing conservative bestsellers, has banished conservative legal author David Limbaugh’s latest, Jesus on Trial, from its upcoming best seller list despite having sales better than 17 other books on the list. According to publishing sources, Limbaugh’s probe into the accuracy of the Bible sold 9,660 in its first week out, according to Nielsen BookScan. That should have made it No. 4 on the NYT print hardcover sales list. Instead, Henry Kissinger’s World Order, praised by Hillary Clinton in the Washington Post, is No. 4 despite weekly sales

It’s official: the U.S. Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals has issued an order declining a request for an en banc hearing in a case involving four students in at a California high school who were sent home for wearing American flag T-shirts on Cinco de Mayo. The full slate of Ninth Circuit judges has thus agreed with a lower district court and with a trio of appellate judges that officials at Live Oak High School in Morgan Hill, Calif. could censor students who wanted to wear flag-emblazoned shirts. The federal appeals court issued its denial of an en banc hearing on Sept.

Federal authorities have charged an upstate New York man with trying to persuade two others in the United States to join the Islamic State, or ISIS, the terrorist group wreaking havoc in Iraq and Syria that U.S. officials have been outspoken about for weeks. Mufid Elfgeeh, 30, of Rochester, also plotted to kill U.S. soldiers who had returned from Iraq, federal prosecutors announced today. Last year, two FBI informants began building relationships with Elfgeeh, who -- not realizing they were working with the FBI -- encouraged them to go overseas and join terrorists in Syria, prosecutors allege in court documents. Flashes of disagreement over how to fight the Islamic State are mounting between President Obama and U.S. military leaders, the latest sign of strain in what often has been an awkward and uneasy relationship. Devastating. That´s really the only way to describe Politico´s piece on DNC Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz. (I hereby nominate her for Worst Week in Washington.) (Editor´s note: Three words -- Joseph. Robinette. Biden.) Based on interviews with DNC staffers -- both former and current -- the piece described Wasserman Schultz as something of a modern-day Tracy Flick: over-eager, disloyal and not shy about promoting her ambitions. It would be fair to say that she sounds like, well, a lot like other politicians. And this would be accurate. But the wholesale bashing of Wasserman Schultz at every level of the party -- White House,

The anti-war president has finally found a way to wag the dog without upsetting his liberal base and war-weary electorate. Despite the beheading of two Americans, establishment of an Islamic caliphate, direct threats to the U.S. homeland, and the destabilization of the entire Middle East, Obama refuses to acknowledge that we are at war with barbaric Islamic jihadists. And he refuses to authorize the requisite boots on the ground. However, Obama just discovered his pre-midterm election method of wagging the dog -- distracting from his incompetent and dangerous response (or lack thereof) to the real threats to America’s national security

The U.S. military campaign against Islamist militants in Syria is being designed to allow President Barack Obama to exert a high degree of personal control, going so far as to require that the military obtain presidential signoff for strikes in Syrian territory, officials said. The requirements for strikes in Syria against the extremist group Islamic State will be far more stringent than those targeting
