Paying people to vote proposed in Los Angeles

Buying votes is illegal, yet the misnamed Los Angeles Ethics Commission is proposing to pay people to vote, in the form of lottery prizes. David Zahniser of the Los Angeles Times reports: Alarmed that fewer than one-fourth of voters are showing up for municipal elections, the Los Angeles Ethics Commission voted Thursday to recommend that the City Council look at using cash prizes to lure a greater number of people to the polls. On a 3-0 vote, the panel said it wanted City Council President Herb Wesson´s Rules, Elections and Intergovernmental Relations Committee to seriously consider the use of financial

Last fall, Takoma Park Middle School math teacher Sarah Manchester heard “Wheel of Fortune” tryouts were taking place in Northern Virginia, so she went. As a huge fan of the show, why not? She sat on the ground, grading papers, as staffers pulled names by random draw to audition for the legendary game show. “I figured if my name wasn’t pulled, at least I was getting my work done,” Manchester recalls almost a year later. As it happened, her name was called and there was a little more excitement in store when she actually made it on the show. On

It is no coincidence that much commentary on the Obama administration revolves around the crime analogy. Michelle Bachmann, on the House floor in 2009, said that the Obama Administration is guilty of “gangster government.” Even the normally circumspect Michael Barone echoed that very term a few years later. David Freddoso even has a book by that title, and throws in the term thugocracy for good measure. Similar references from Rush Limbaugh, Mark Levin, and other talkers are too numerous to reference. Rush has been particularly eloquent on the issue of political money laundering by way of government unions. In a

Vice President Biden touched on a number of Democratic campaign themes during a speech in Iowa on Wednesday to help kick off a nationwide tour for a group of Catholic nuns traveling the country to register voters. Though his trip to the first-in-the-nation presidential nominating state stoked speculation about his own bid, Biden said he was there for the nuns. "I was asked by the press why am I going out with Nuns on the Bus. I said because they are nuns. It is a simple proposition. You are looking at a kid that had 12 years of Catholic education. I

President Obama and Vice President Biden will debut a new campaign urging men to get more involved in preventing sexual assault on college campuses Friday at the White House. The campaign, dubbed “It´s On Us,” is designed around “the belief that it’s on all of us to be part of the solution in stopping sexual assault,” according to a White House official. “The president and vice president strongly believe that everyone has the right to live free from the threat of sexual assault, and have long been deeply committed to rooting out this violence wherever it exists,” the official said.

For the first time in his presidency, more Americans disapprove of President Obama’s handling of terrorism than approve of it, as discontent about his management of foreign affairs and the fight against Sunni militants in Iraq and Syria weighs on an anxious and conflicted public, according to the latest New York Times/CBS News Poll. As Mr. Obama broadens the military offensive against Islamic extremists, the survey finds broad support for United States airstrikes in Iraq and Syria, but it also demonstrates how torn Americans are about wading back into battle in the Middle East. You are probably generally aware of the situation in Kansas, where long-time (and not very inspiring) Senator Pat Roberts survived a primary challenge by insurgent Milton Wolf, but was badly weakened for the general election. The Democrats shrewdly talked their endorsed candidate out of the race, and instead are coalescing behind “independent” candidate Greg Orman. Kansas voters surely would not elect Orman if they knew that doing so would keep Harry Reid in place as Majority Leader, but Orman’s “independent” stance is confusing quite a few Kansans. It shouldn’t. On Monday, Orman came out of the closet by endorsing the

Democrats are now (very slightly) favored to hold the Senate majority on Nov. 4, according to Election Lab, the Post´s statistical model of the 2014 midterm elections. Election Lab puts Democrats´ chances of retaining their majority at 51 percent -- a huge change from even a few months ago when the model predicted that Republicans had a better than 80 percent chance of winning the six seats they need to take control.
