The UN’s crimes against humanity
Jerusalem Post [Israel], by Nadav Mansdorf

True to its usual ritual of condemning Israel and establishing an international commission of inquiry against it, the UN Council for Human Rights is directly responsible for the systematic killing of scores of Palestinians in Gaza. The bitter Israeli-Palestinian conflict has been going on for over 60 years and is rife with blood and emotion. Traditionally, the world, including Israel, has thought of the conflict as about territory, as a clash between cultures or a historical struggle. Big oil and gas is starting to really like U.S. Sen. Tim Scott. The junior Republican from South Carolina is listed as the No. 4 recipient in campaign donations this election season that businesses tied to the oil and gas industry gave to the members of Congress´ upper chamber. Scott, a senator for less than two years, has collected $226,401 for the 2014 election cycle from groups with oil and gas ties, according to an analysis by the government watchdog OpenSecrets.org/Center for Responsive Politics. [Snip] For comparison, senior Republican S.C. Sen. Lindsey Graham is ranked 19th on the group´s listing, with $65,750

So that’s all right then. We can all relax, and go back to playing boules. The Yazidi are apparently off the mountain, there’s a nice new Iraqi prime minister in office, Isis have been stalled outside Irbil, and Hitler has agreed to watch the fifth Test match with an eye to mastering the rules of LBW. Except, it’s not all right, is it. [Snip] They are sucking in power, they possess a third of Syria and a third of Iraq, they are attracting hormonal, spotty, sex-deprived Islamist yoofs with an eye for a blonde Yazidi concubine from right across the world, they have tanks, missiles, $2 billion, an income of $3 million a day,

A British Army colonel´s life was saved by a US soldier who jumped in front of an assassin´s hail of bullets, it has been reported. The US Army reservist, who normally works for Apple, the Silicon Valley-based electronics company, was shot six times as an Afghan assailant opened fire on a group of high-ranking officers at a military training academy earlier this month, The Sunday Times said. The reservist, who has not been named, used his body as a shield to literally "take a bullet" for the senior British officer, and was hit twice in the leg and once in the shoulder, with a further three rounds stopped by his bulletproof vest.

Kurdish forces supported by US air strikes are battling to retake Mosul dam from Islamic State (IS) fighters in northern Iraq. The operation to recapture the country´s largest dam began early on Saturday with raids by F-18 fighters and drones, US officials said. Kurdish Peshmerga fighters have shelled militants´ positions, and there is an unconfirmed report of a ground attack. Meanwhile, reports are coming in of new massacres by IS. The extreme Sunni group, which overran Mosul this summer and seeks to build a new state spanning Iraq and Syria, has been accused of a new massacre of non-Muslims on Friday, in a village

Stability. Security. The peace of mind that comes from being able to get a decent job and provide for your family, in a country that you feel has a good future ahead of it and that treats people fairly. In a nutshell, that is what people in Britain want--and what the Government I lead is dedicated to building. [Snip] True security will only be achieved if we use all our resources--aid, diplomacy, our military prowess--to help bring about a more stable world. Today, when every nation is so immediately interconnected, we cannot turn a blind eye and assume that there will not be a cost for us if we do.

Reports Saturday indicate that Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS) forces in Iraq have killed 700 members of a tribe in eastern Syria over the last two weeks, and killed hundreds of the Yazidi ethnic minority on Friday and Saturday in massacres in northern Iraq. The terror group fell upon the Iraqi village of Kocho on Friday, after local Yazidi´s refused their ultimatum to convert to Islam or be murdered, according to reports by local Yazidis and Kurds. Hamas has sounded a belligerent tone as negotiations for a long-term truce continue in Cairo. In a message posted on his Facebook page, Hamas´s "foreign affairs" chief Osama Hamdan said the Islamist terror group rejects the current Egyptian proposal, and pledged a "long war" of attrition against Israel. "Israel must accept the demands of the Palestinian people or face a long war," he said. Other Hamas officials issued similar statements over the course of Saturday. Hamdan´s Facebook message was posted not long before a message on the Twitter account of the "military wing" of Hamas, the Ezzedine al-Qassam Brigades, in which the group vowed

A Travis County grand jury today indicted Gov. Rick Perry on two charges related to his effort last year to force District Attorney Rosemary Lehmberg to resign after her drunken driving arrest. Grand jurors charged Perry, 63, with abuse of official capacity, a first-degree felony, and coercion of a public official. The indictments stemmed from Perry’s threat last summer to withhold $7.2 million in state money from Lehmberg’s office unless she step down – a threat he later carried out by vetoing an appropriation in the state budget. The money was earmarked for the state’s Public Integrity Unit, which is housed in Lehmberg’s office. Perry’s veto forced

FERGUSON, Mo. — The friend who was with Michael Brown when he was shot and killed by a police officer near St. Louis over the weekend is reportedly confirming that he and Brown had taken part in the theft of cigars from a convenience store that day. That word comes from the attorney for Dorian Johnson, speaking to MSNBC. Police in Ferguson had earlier announced that Brown was suspected of taking cigars from the convenience store in what was described as a "strong-arm robbery." Brown´s family is accusing police of trying to draw attention away from the shooting.

This is ridiculous. AUSTIN (KXAN) – A grand jury has handed up an indictment against Gov. Rick Perry in connection with the investigation into an effort to force Travis County District Attorney Rosemary Lehmberg to resign. Perry wanted Lehmberg to resign because she had been busted for drunk driving. It’s not good to have a drunk driver, captured on camera abusing the officers who arrested her, heading up the Public Integrity Unit. At the center of the issue is a complaint about intimidation stemming from Perry’s threat to veto of $7.5 million in state funding to the Public Integrity Unit

The scandal that erupted Friday night involved millions of dollars, statehouse power plays—oh yeah, and alcohol, police, and masks. Texas Governor Rick Perry was indicted Friday on charges of abuse of power—a first degree felony—and coercion—a third degree felony. The charges stem from a 2013 scandal that has been quietly rumbling in the Lone Star State as Perry has been floated as a viable contender for the Republican nomination in 2016. This is a complex case, which might be why it has not made national headlines the way other recent, state-level scandals (like Bridgegate, in New Jersey) have. Below, I have outlined

A grand jury in Travis County, Texas, indicted Governor Rick Perry today. Why? For exercising his constitutional prerogative by threatening to veto, and then vetoing, an appropriation to support the public corruption unit in Travis County’s district attorney’s office. This followed the arrest of the county’s district attorney, Democratic Party activist Rosemary Lehmberg, for drunk driving, after she was found “with an open bottle of vodka in the front passenger seat of her car in a church parking lot in Austin.” Ms. Lehmberg served 45 days in jail. The Travis County district attorney’s office has long been a cesspool of corruption.

Officers are seeking the person who shot the critically-wounded victim after the 12am-5am curfew took hold in Ferguson, Missouri - eight days after Michael Brown, 18, was shot dead by police. They say a prosecutor could get a grand jury to indict a ham sandwich, and this always seemed like hyperbole, until Friday night a Texas grand jury announced an indictment of governor Rick Perry. The “crime” for which Perry faces a sentence of 5 to 99 years in prison is vetoing funding for a state agency. The conventions of reporting — which treat the fact of an indictment as the primary news, and its merit as a secondary analytic question — make it difficult for people reading the news to grasp just how farfetched this indictment is. The Obama administration has done little to calm racial tensions as they spread from Manhattan to St. Louis to Los Angeles. Quite the opposite, some top officials have fueled African-American fears of racism with false accusations of anti-black discrimination. Attorney General Eric Holder’s race-baiting is no secret. Justice Department documents show the nation’s top cop gave thousands of dollars to help the Rev. Al Sharpton organize marches protesting the death of Trayvon Martin. Now he’s sent the civil-rights unit to St. Louis to do the same thing in the fatal shooting of Michael Brown. Less known, however, is the role of Labor Secretary Thomas
