The Problem With The Right Part 2
Townhall, by Derek Hunter

Original Article

On Thursday, I started a column about the problems of the political right, but there are too many to cover in one column, so here we are again. Again, this qualifier: I recognize there are major differences between the various factions of the political right – social conservatives, fiscal conservatives, national security conservatives, Tea Partiers, etc. – and all bleed into each other to varying degrees. Each has its problems and strengths. But for purposes of brevity I will just refer to them all nebulously as “Republicans.” It may irritate some, but tough. This is about politics, not pandering. So a guy who makes his livelihood sharing his beltway opinions with others in the beltway has now endorsed another check by telling those outside the beltway that their values and principles aren´t welcome.....in the beltway.

But the ruling class stares dumbfounded by the concept that one size fits all government solutions are only popular.... in the beltway.

Government isn´t the solution to the problem...

Much of it makes sense, but horse before the cart, please. First we need to start with candidates that hold those values he mentions that are suppose to be Republican ones. If we agree on those then we can focus on the winning points, setting the others aside for after the win. That´s not happening, instead we were getting Democrat lite all too often.

Ok, I read the piece and a whole bunch of cliches jump to mind about this writer´s analysis: navel-gazing, how many angels, etc. Maybe I simply disagree with much of it. I am with him, however, with the statement at the end of the article:

"But if you can’t convey a clear, easy-to-digest conservative message, and stick to the issues on the top of voters’ concerns, you will lose."

Presidents can´t change abortion, gay marriage nor any of a hundred other things. It should be left to the states.

The POTUS is responsible for protesting our borders, our citizens (even the soldier stuck in a Mexican jail) and otherwise enforcing the written Constitution.

I don´t see any of that happening today.

I can put this to bed right now. Every ninety days before an election the media trots out a number of articles on the problem with the Republicans. Derek Hunter drew the short straw at Journolist. Need Proof? Where or when will Derek Hunter honor us with a two article screed on the problems with the Democrat Party?

A good read by a long time conservative who makes excellent observations.
The majority of voters want to hear about the economy and jobs, not abortion and gay marriage.
The media and the far right like Limbaugh ,
want Republicans to stress social issues .
This causes candidates to get mired in
self defeating controversy , ala Aiken.
While the Democrats wisely focus on the economic issues voters really care about.
FTA- " But if you can’t convey a clear, easy-to-digest conservative message, and stick to the issues
on the top of voters’ concerns, you will lose.
We will lose. The country will lose.
And, as we’ve seen in recent months,
the whole world will lose. "

He is right. Smart red state Democratic candidates stay away from the issues that hurt them, regardless of their views, e.g. death penalty, guns, welfare rights, higher taxes, military disarmament and Obama. Too often we are in it to debate. They are in it to win.

Voters do need to know where the candidates stand on those national issues but, at the same time, we need to know the candidates & thus their own expressed views can be trusted. Ethics certainly factor in regarding how trustworthy any candidate is. Voters must sort out who merits that trust based upon their accomplishments AND actions leading up to their candidacy, ...actions which do matter as much or more than their words.

To previous comments that "social issues" belong with the states, may I remind you that the states is where they were. It has been the repeated and to my mind hideously wrong intrusions by unaccountable FEDERAL judges the have made these issues federal ones. Not the other way around. It was the despicable clowns on SCOTUS who foisted abortion on the whole nation. It is federal courts attacking traditional marriage and raft of other matters thst have brought us to this state of affairs. Not disgruntled voters and officeholders with American values. Until we tell government, most especially the federal courts, to stay the heck out, then we the people are going to be seeking redress. And we ain´t barely begun.

AUSTIN, Texas -- Over the weekend, Texas´ two senators traded barbs over the last year´s government shutdown in a pair of speeches delivered at The Texas Tribune Festival, a conference at the University of Texas at Austin organized by the online media outlet. Senator John Cornyn delivered a keynote address on Saturday morning and Senator Ted Cruz followed later that afternoon. Both made remarks placing blame for partisan gridlock on Democratic leadership of the Senate, but it is their comments on the shutdown that are generating the buzz.

John Koskinen has failed the IRS and the American people. IRS Commissioner John Koskinen testified last week about the missing emails lost forever due to computer failures. When questioned about any more crashes or computer issues recently, Koskinen told the House Oversight and Government Reform subcommittee that “Hard drive crashes continue as we speak.” Can someone please buy the IRS reliable computers and a backup system? Don’t forget, the IRS canceled the back-up contract service that they had for six years, shortly after Lois Lerner’s original hard drive went missing.

I know a lot of people are giddy at the prospect of Republicans taking the Senate this November, but that’s becoming less and less likely. It’s not because Democrats are rallying around a particular mission or set of candidates; it’s because Republicans and conservatives aren’t. It seems like I’m always writing on issues no one wants to hear are mistakes, such as messaging or social issues. But I don’t care. These things have to be said. If these columns are received like a gaseous cousin on a long car trip through the desert, so be it. Crack a window… If things continue on their current course, the GOP will not retake the Senate.

After declaring war on the Tea Party and often showing nothing but contempt for grassroots conservatives that powered Republicans to record gains in the 2010 midterm elections, Karl Rove whined that the GOP may not take back the Senate this year because of the lack of enthusiasm for his establishment-approved candidates. Writing in the Wall Street Journal, Rove notes that even though Obama´s "job approval numbers are lousy, no Democrat in a competitive Senate race polls regularly above 50%, GOP enthusiasm is high, and independents are trending Republican... each passing day provides evidence as to why a GOP Senate majority is

How can Republicans recapture the U.S. Senate from Harry Reid and the Democrats? A new Politico poll points to a winning strategy — if GOP leaders have the courage to use the remaining seven weeks to nationalize the elections around one game-changing issue. Under the headline, “GOP has edge on immigration in midterms,” Politico offered a surprising review of battleground House and Senate races. The generally liberal publication found that two-thirds of likely voters disapprove of President Obama’s handling of the issue — and that even independent voters trust the GOP over the Democrats on the subject.

A fact that every politician and news talking-head in the world seems to be certain of is that you can’t win a war by air power alone. Even the media-hired retired generals throw it out as an absolute truth of warfare, as if it had fallen from the lips of Sun Tzu himself. Ask anyone, civilian, military, whatever, and he will quickly inform you of the truth of that unassailable rule of modern warfare. But when has any nation ever in history attempted to prevail in war by the singular use of airpower? “It has never happened because it just won’t

There was a tone of fatalism in the comments of many with whom I spoke; they despair that the kind of radical change they advocate probably won’t result from the normal democratic process. It was once said, “religion is designed to comfort the afflicted and to afflict the comfortable.” Jesus’ parables – short stories with moral lessons – were likewise designed to afflict, to draw us in but leave us uncomfortable. These teachings can be read as being about divine love and salvation, sure. But, their first listeners – first century Jews in Galilee and Judea – heard much more challenging messages. Only when we hear the parables as Jesus’ own audience did can we fully experience their power and find ourselves surprised and challenged today. Here are four examples of Jesus’ teachings that everybody gets wrong: 1.
