Mao´s Archenemy Chiang
Kai-shek Part of Mainstream

BEIJING -- Photos of Mao´s archenemy Chiang Kai-shek adorn the walls of a Beijing restaurant, and his face looks up at diners from the menu. Online, the deposed Chinese leader´s image is used to sell the kinds of lamps and swords he might have used. A liquor brand has patterned its bottle on Chiang´s memorial in Taipei. Twenty years ago, Chiang was considered an enemy of the people on mainland China. Today, he has become part of mainstream culture - sort of. There has been a grudging acceptance of Chiang´s historical role in fighting against Japan following its invasion in the lead-up

Chiang Kai-Shek and his wife, and Sun Yat-Sen are part of my childhood memories, and of my big brother reading "Terry and the Pirates" to me from the Sunday comics pages.

Mine too, #1. I can yet hear my parents saying, "The Chinese people will never accept Communism. They are too family-oriented to put their children in indoctrination schools. This revolutionary government will be overturned pretty quickly".

Well, parents aren´t always right, are they?

Jameis Winston´s lawyer has fired off a letter to Florida State University ... claiming the woman who accused his client of rape demanded $7 MILLION to buy her silence. David Cornwell, the lawyer for the Heisman Trophy winner, sent a letter to FSU, saying Winston will fully cooperate with the University´s ongoing investigation into the handling of the rape charges. The alleged victim claims the University engaged in sexual discrimination by sweeping her claims under the rug to protect its prized athlete. According to the letter -- obtained by TMZ Sports -- the alleged victim´s lawyer, Patricia Carroll, demanded $7 MIL to

Of the countless lessons we’ve learned from liberals over the past few years, none is more critical than this: If Democrats find an issue important enough, and if doing something feels like the “right thing,” Barack Obama has the power to act without any regard for separation of powers. So what makes anyone believe that war would be any different? This week the president okayed airstrikes against ISIS targets—allying us with Assad Bashar, possibly Iran and definitely Qatar—using an unrelated 13-year old AUMF as his legal mandate. Seems like a big deal. It might even be a good idea. Yet, even

Changes to the forms required for firearms purchases asking questions about the buyer’s race and ethnicity have drawn strong reaction from gun dealers, privacy advocates and lawmakers. Form 4473, required for an over-the-counter sale by a federally-licensed dealer, now asks first whether a buyer is Hispanic or Non-Hispanic, followed by a question delving into more detailed race-based information. Critics want to know why the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives quietly made the change in 2012. Sen Roy Blunt, R-Mo., sent a letter to ATF Director Todd Jones asking why the information was being collected and whether the data had ever been

A middle-aged woman walked into the emergency room of Phebe Hospital with a fever on the evening of June 23. Phebe was known as one of the best hospitals in rural Liberia, supported by the local government and international religious and academic partners. Phebe was especially known for its high-quality nursing care, serving as a training hospital for nearby Cuttington University, one of the country´s few nursing schools. A few hours after arriving in the emergency room, the woman was admitted to the medicine ward with a list of potential infections -- all the usual suspects in Bong County: malaria, typhoid, sepsis. A judge granted a two-month trial delay on Wednesday for Boston Marathon bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, but denied a defense request to move his trial from Boston. Judge George O´Toole ruled that the trial will begin Jan. 5 instead of Nov. 3, but said there´s no reason to assume in advance that a fair jury cannot be selected in Massachusetts. Defense attorneys had asked that the trial be moved to Washington, D.C., citing extensive media coverage in Boston and evaluations of public sentiment by their experts. They also asked for a trial delay until at least September 2015, saying they have not

PYONGYANG, North Korea -- An American man recently sentenced by North Korea to six years of hard labor says he is digging in fields eight hours a day and being kept in isolation, but that so far his health isn´t deteriorating. Under close guard and with only enough time to respond to one question, 24-year-old Matthew Miller spoke briefly to an Associated Press Television News journalist at a Pyongyang hotel, where he had been brought to make a phone call to his family. It was his first appearance since he was convicted Sept. 14 of entering the country illegally to commit

Rickie Fowler’s “USA” haircut. Oliver Brown, a sports writer at The Telegraph, wrote that Fowler’s “GI Joe-style crewcut” is “an exhibition of thuggish jingoism” that could make the biennial event “nasty.” Brown used Fowler’s haircut to draw conclusions about the fiery intentions of the entire American squad, especially its coach. President Obama should be commended for yesterday’s air attacks against ISIS. In addition, his decision to bomb the jidhadist Khorasan group, which is believed to be plotting attacks against the West, is praiseworthy. As to this affiliate of al Qaeda, Obama seems, for once, to be acting rather than reacting. Even so, I tend to agree with Max Boot who argues that the most consequential news from the Levant yesterday is not the air attacks, but rather advances by ISIS on the ground. In Iraq, ISIS attackers in Anbar Province reportedly killed more than 300 Iraqi soldiers after a weeklong siege

The Clinton Global Initiative, which gathers in New York this week for its 10th annual meeting, has always had a Hollywood feel to it, not least because there are invariably a few celebrities invited to mingle with the corporate suits and international development worthies. This year’s batch includes actor-activists Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon, Ashley Judd and Eva Longoria. The biggest celebrity, of course, is typically the former president himself, who provides participants with plenty of photo ops as he guides the conversation like a cross between an eminent professor and an ebullient Oscar host. But Mr. Clinton may find himself overshadowed

WASHINGTON - A record 20 percent of adult Americans, or 42 million people, have never married, marking a U.S. demographic and social shift, according to an analysis released on Wednesday. The rise in never-married adults is caused by several factors, including later ages for marriage and more people living together and raising children outside of wedlock, the report by the Pew Research Center said. In 2012, 23 percent of men and 17 percent of women 25 and older had never been married, marking a widening gap between the sexes. In 1960, 10 percent of men and 8 percent of women had never

President Barack Obama saluted a pair of United States Marines on Tuesday while holding what appeared to be a styrofoam cup in his saluting hand, a breach of military regulations that won´t win him fans among veterans and servicemen. Obama is known for drinking tea, not coffee, when he travels, especially before delivering speeches. His quasi-saluting gesture was an instant embarrassment for the White House, and not because his environmentally taboo drinkware clashed with the green-policy speech he was on his way to deliver at a UN Climate Summit. On Tuesday, shortly after announcing to the American public that the United States was now bombing ISIS in Syria, the President of the United States flew to New York to address the United Nations – on climate change. His speech mixed high-flown sentiment with apologies for America, and pledged American sacrifice in the name of a lofty goal without evidence that such sacrifice would in any way contribute to attaining that goal. In other words, it was a typical Barack Obama whirligig. Even as American warplanes struck targets in Syria, even as regimes tottered in Jordan and Iraq and Yemen,

President Obama on Wednesday delivered a speech at the United Nations filled with his usual soaring rhetoric of global collectivism and the importance of “international norms.” But the president also displayed a shocking naivete about global affairs, religion, Islam — a Pollyannaish interpretation on the state of the world and America’s role in it. Although Mr. Obama won a Nobel Peace Prize just eight months into office, the president made his annual trip to the ineffectual world council to deliver a call to war. “Ladies and gentlemen, we come together at a crossroads between war and peace,

So this video of The View’s women grappling with the Obama administration’s response to ISIS terrorism is noteworthy. I want to highlight O’Donnell’s contribution near the end: We are bombing Syria because Syria has so much oil, so there is a “financial incentive.” What the Hell is this supposed to mean? Why are liberals obsessed with oil? And what, exactly, is the “financial incentive?” Here is the

If there is one thing Chelsea Clinton is most worried about, it may be that her soon-to-be child will grow up in a world without elephants. Standing alongside her mother, Hillary Clinton, at the Clinton Global Initiative this afternoon, the very-pregnant former first daughter warned the plight of African elephants, killed for their ivory tusks, is an “existential” one, and said that if the current poaching rates continue, elephants could be few and far between within the next decade.
