Mary Landrieu´s Terrible, Horrible,
No Good, Very Bad Week

ABC News, by Jordyn Phelps

It’s been a tough week for Sen. Mary Landrieu. If it wasn’t bad enough that the three-term Louisiana Democrat was already considered one of the most vulnerable Democrats in the 2014 midterms -- whose seat could determine control of the Senate -- this week, Landrieu’s re-election bid was rocked by turbulence over a private jet scandal and the announcement that her leading opponent now has more money to spend in the campaign. The campaign of her GOP challenger, Rep. Bill Cassidy, announced Thursday that he had pulled ahead of Landrieu with $5.6 million cash on hand, according to new FEC filing posted

Taking a personal flight on the taxpayers´ dime? Imagine a public official doing such a thing, especially if it was a highly modified 747 instead of a Lear.

Her fundraising skills will have to increase as now her campaign will have to pay for her flights and not US taxpayers. It really must be nice to have unlimited funds and no accountability like Dem politicians enjoy.

According to the landrieu campaign and abc news the use of senate funds for the flight was a mistake. Two times in the article, abc news said landrieu blamed the charter company. Yet, there is no comment in the article from the scapegoated charter company. That begs questions about who owns the charter company and how much business they get from landrieu.

Last week, two aircraft took off from an air base in western Russia, just east of the Russian city of Saratov. The aircraft, Tu-95 strategic bombers code-named Bear by NATO, flew northwest, skirting Iceland, Greenland, and Canada. Once beyond Canada, the two lumbering, propeller-driven bombers settled on a heading straight toward the United States. Their goal was a "launch box" off the coast of the U.S. from which, during wartime, they would fire nuclear-tipped cruise missiles towards American cities and military bases. The provocative flights were timed to a NATO summit, attended by President Obama, then taking place in Wales. On the

NEW YORK-After forgiving millions of dollars in medical debt, Occupy Wall Street is tackling a new beast: student loans. Marking the third anniversary of the Occupy Wall Street movement, the group´s Strike Debt initiative announced Wednesday it has abolished $3.8 million worth of private student loan debt since January. It said it has been buying the debts for pennies on the dollar from debt collectors, and then simply forgiving that money rather than trying to collect it. In total, the group spent a little more than $100,000 to purchase the $3.8 million in debt. While the group is unable to

The threat posed by ISIS has invaded the campaign ads and speeches all across the U.S., but the issue has had special resonance in Minnesota where an unusual number of people have left to join the terrorist group. More than a dozen of the nearly 100 Americans believed to have joined ISIS, including several women, hail from the Minneapolis-St. Paul area, according to federal authorities. Many are recruited from the area´s large Somali population, but the recruits are not confined to Somalis. Douglas McCain, the first American killed fighting for ISIS, was also a Minnesota native. Over the weekend the latest in the rolling scandal surrounding Mary Landrieu’s practice of charging taxpayers for her campaign travel throughout Louisiana made its way into a sluggish and indifferent local media. You would think the news that since 2000 Landrieu had spent some $34,000 on forty-three separate incidents of chartered travel to fundraisers and other campaign events, the result of an audit by the law firm of Perkins Coie into her Senate office books, would have exploded into Louisiana’s media. But Landrieu’s embarrassing and troubling disclosure was released—naturally!—on Friday afternoon. And by Sunday, no mention of the news had made

In a post over at Townhall last week, I explored the striking gap between national public opinion trends and polling results in individual contested races. The former data set looks highly promising for Republicans — Allahpundit wrote about the generic ballot on Friday — while the latter offers little indication of a coming red wave. Why aren’t GOP candidates surging across the board in the midst of such an auspicious overall electoral environment? Why is President Obama’s toxic brand dragging down certain Democrats, but not others? When I posed these questions to Real Clear Politics’ top elections guru, Sean Trende,

EDINBURGH, Scotland -- On Calton Hill, overlooking Edinburgh, stands Scotland´s National Monument. A colonnade of classical stone pillars modeled on the Parthenon in Athens, it´s grand, inspiring - and unfinished, ever since the money to build it ran out two centuries ago. It´s a fitting image for the country as seen by independence campaigners, who hope voters will finish Scotland´s incomplete journey to statehood by backing separation from Britain in a referendum on Thursday. Polls suggest the outcome will be close. For many people south of the Scottish-English border, the idea that Scotland might leave the United Kingdom has come as a

KABUL, Afghanistan -- A Taliban attacker detonated his car bomb next to an international military convoy on Tuesday, killing three troops from the NATO-led force and wounding nearly 20 troops and civilians, officials said. Security forces in full battle gear administered CPR to wounded comrades shortly after the 8:10 a.m. blast, which rattled nearby neighborhoods and sent a plume of smoke high into the sky. The attack happened only a couple hundred yards from the U.S. Embassy, on a main Kabul road that leads to the airport. Getting those who signed up this year enrolled again for 2015 won´t be as easy as it might seem. And the law´s interaction between insurance and taxes looks like a sure-fire formula for confusion. After the beheading of another Western captive by ISIS, an international conference convened Monday in Paris to talk about how to tackle the threat posed by the Islamic extremist group. Election Lab puts Democrats´ chances of retaining their majority at 51 percent -- a huge change from even a few months ago when the model predicted that Republicans had a better than 80 percent chance of winning the six seats they need to take control.
