Israel’s Foreign Ministry welcomed on Friday the call by the European Union (EU) for terrorist groups in Gaza to disarm. The EU’s call came in a statement in which the bloc offered to take charge of Gaza´s border crossings and work to prevent illegal arms flows. “Israel, like the foreign ministers of the European Union in their statement tonight, places great importance on the Egyptian initiative to achieve a long and steady calm,” said the Foreign Ministry’s statement. “Israel welcomes the ministers’ repeated calls for the terrorist organizations in Gaza to disarm. A very carefully and cleverly worded response to the communication from Baroness Ashford´s gang in the EU. The Baroness received her lifetime peerage from the Labour Party (not from the Queen, although she presents the awardss at Buckingham Palace).

The European Union (EU) on Friday offered to take charge of Gaza´s border crossings and work to prevent illegal arms flows, according to The Associated Press (AP). The EU is prepared "to play a strong role" in managing the crossings while assuring that Israel´s security is guaranteed, said the 28-nation bloc´s foreign policy chief, Catherine Ashton. The EU offered to reactivate and extend its monitoring of the Rafiah crossing with Egypt and other border posts, provided there will be a UN Security Council mandate for the mission and a sustainable cease-fire in place, according to AP.

Ferguson police Name officer who shot

Police today named Darren Wilson as the officer who fatally shot Michael Brown and released video stills and an incident report on a robbery shortly before the shooting that named the teenager as the ‘primary suspect’. In a shocking twist to the killing which sparked riots in St Louis over the last few days, the officer investigating the convenience store robbery also attended the scene of the shooting and said the suspect and Brown were the same person. According to the police report, video shows Brown and his friend Dorian Johnson having an altercation with store staff and allegedly stealing box of Swisher Sweets,

Mark Steyn has published his latest brief in his protracted court case with discredited climate scientist Michael Mann (who is suing him for libel) and it´s a corker. Here´s a sample: The audacity of the falsehoods in Mann's court pleadings is breathtaking. For example, on page 19 of his brief below dated January 18, 2013, he cites the international panel chaired by the eminent scientist Lord Oxburgh, FRS as one of the bodies that "exonerated" him, whereas on page 235 of Mann's own book, The Hockey Stick and the Climate Wars, he states explicitly that "our own work did not fall within the remit of the committee and the hockey stick

Iraq crisis: Arming Kurds

EU foreign ministers are holding an emergency meeting in Brussels on Friday to discuss plans to arm Iraq´s Kurds against an extremist insurgency. France and the US have already begun to supply weapons to the Kurds, whose Peshmerga fighters are trying to halt an advance by Islamic State militants. On Thursday, Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri Maliki resigned and conceded power to Haider al-Abadi, Iraq´s deputy speaker. Meanwhile, the governor of Dohuk province has warned of a "genocide". "We have hundreds of thousands (of refugees). We´re going to face an international humanitarian catastrophe because many of these kids and children will

Terror group Boko Haram are feared to have abducted almost 100 boys and men in a raid on a village in Nigeria, just months after the militants captured more than 200 schoolgirls. Witnesses said fighters loaded their captives onto trucks before driving away from the remote area in the northeast of the west African country. The bloodthirsty extremists, who aim to reinstate a medieval Islamic caliphate in religiously mixed Nigeria, are likely to have kidnapped the boys in order to force them to fight. Those who fled after Sunday´s raid on Doron Baga, a sandy fishing village near the shores of Lake

Barack Obama is playing a dangerous game of semantics with the America people right now, promising that there will be "no boots on the ground" in Iraq even as teams of "advisers" (including US Marines) yesterday landed for the first time on Mt Sinjar. Chuck Hagel, the US defence secretary was "crystal" on this point last week, telling reporters that "under no circumstances would he [Mr Obama] be sending American troops, boots on the ground, back into combat in Iraq". By Tuesday, when he announced another 130 advisers, including Marines, would be joining the 800 or more advisers already in

The UK would "consider favourably" any request for arms from the Kurds in their battle with extremists in Iraq, the foreign secretary has confirmed. Philip Hammond described militant group Islamic State (IS), which is fighting the Kurds and has seized large parts of northern Iraq, as a "terrible threat". It is understood the UK has not been formally asked for direct help. The issue is the subject of a meeting of EU foreign ministers in Brussels and the government´s emergency committee. WASHINGTON--The Obama administration denied on Thursday that it was surprised by the processing of a munitions delivery by the Pentagon to Israel during its operation in Gaza last month. Without issuing a full-throated denial of a report that the White House issued a halt on the delivery of Hellfire missiles, administration officials said the claims, first surfacing in the Wall Street Journal, were a mischaracterization of inter-agency procedure, and of a policy unchanged. [Snip] "Given the crisis in Gaza, it is natural that agencies take additional care with deliveries as part of an inter-agency process."

While President Obama works on his golf swing, British Prime Minister David Cameron has cut his summer holiday short to preside over an emergency crisis meeting about the Islamic State in Iraq. Perhaps Cameron´s mind has been concentrated by stories like this one--a transcript of an interview with a British-born jihadist on the popular teenage chat-room Ask.fm. President Obama won´t make any major announcements on immigration reform during his secretive mid-vacation trip back to Washington next week, the White House said Wednesday. The president is expected to return to the White House on Sunday, but officials won´t say why Obama is taking the unusual, and costly, trip back to Washington. He´s expected to return to Martha´s Vineyard, where he´s been vacationing, on Tuesday. Speculation has circled around whether Obama might make an announcement of executive actions he´s taking on immigration reform, or a surprise visit from a foreign leader. But the White House is "not anticipating a major announcement on

FERGUSON, Mo. — The friend who was with Michael Brown when he was shot and killed by a police officer near St. Louis over the weekend is reportedly confirming that he and Brown had taken part in the theft of cigars from a convenience store that day. That word comes from the attorney for Dorian Johnson, speaking to MSNBC. Police in Ferguson had earlier announced that Brown was suspected of taking cigars from the convenience store in what was described as a "strong-arm robbery." Brown´s family is accusing police of trying to draw attention away from the shooting.

A Travis County grand jury today indicted Gov. Rick Perry on two charges related to his effort last year to force District Attorney Rosemary Lehmberg to resign after her drunken driving arrest. Grand jurors charged Perry, 63, with abuse of official capacity, a first-degree felony, and coercion of a public official. The indictments stemmed from Perry’s threat last summer to withhold $7.2 million in state money from Lehmberg’s office unless she step down – a threat he later carried out by vetoing an appropriation in the state budget. The money was earmarked for the state’s Public Integrity Unit, which is housed in Lehmberg’s office. Perry’s veto forced

I’m a Democrat. I’ve been a Democrat my entire life. I used to utter those two sentences with pride and would shout them from the highest rooftops. Now, I’m almost embarrassed to say those words. I almost can’t articulate my political affiliation in public (or on the radio) without immediately offering an apology and an explanation. How did I get here? I’ve been asking myself that question a lot lately. The more I ask it, the more I come to the realization that I haven’t changed all that much. Sure, I’m a little older … OK, a lot older. I

President Obama said Thursday that “now is the time for healing” after a series of clashes between protesters and police over the shooting of a black teenager in Ferguson, Mo., but he also called for an open and transparent investigation “to see that justice is done” in the case. Speaking from Martha’s Vineyard, Mass., where he is on vacation, Obama said that many Americans “have been deeply disturbed” by images of violence in the St. Louis suburb following the police shooting Saturday afternoon of Michael Brown, an unarmed 18-year-old African American who was headed to technical college this week. “When something like

This is ridiculous. AUSTIN (KXAN) – A grand jury has handed up an indictment against Gov. Rick Perry in connection with the investigation into an effort to force Travis County District Attorney Rosemary Lehmberg to resign. Perry wanted Lehmberg to resign because she had been busted for drunk driving. It’s not good to have a drunk driver, captured on camera abusing the officers who arrested her, heading up the Public Integrity Unit. At the center of the issue is a complaint about intimidation stemming from Perry’s threat to veto of $7.5 million in state funding to the Public Integrity Unit

What on earth? In the middle of a war this country’s president publicly says is justified owing to the relentlessness of the rocket fire against civilian populations, U.S. officials proudly tell the Wall Street Journal, they are holding up weapons transfers to Israel: They decided to require White House and State Department approval for even routine munitions requests by Israel, officials say. Instead of being handled as a military-to-military matter, each case is now subject to review—slowing the approval process and signaling to Israel that military assistance once taken for granted is now under closer scrutiny. These transfers were taking

Shocking accounts of medieval brutality — including video of kneeling Iraqis being gunned down, a Twitter image of a young jihadist holding a severed head and threats by ISIS to take its savagery to the White House — have prompted desperate calls for the international community to stop the fanatical Islamic group. UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon this week joined Pope Francis, Egypt´s top cleric and several world leaders in condemning the terrorist group, which now calls itself Islamic State and has carved out a caliphate, or nation of strict Sharia law, in northern Iraq and Syria.
