Shameful scare tactics by ‘No On 2’

Every two minutes, a person in the United States is sexually assaulted. Almost half of rape victims are under 18 years old. And about two-thirds of sexual assaults are committed by someone known to the victim. You would think in 2014 that you wouldn’t have to say this, but apparently I do: Rape is a serious issue. It affects men and women. It isn’t something to joke about, and it certainly isn’t something to play politics with. That’s why I was appalled when I recently saw an absurdly disingenuous political advertisement from the Vote No On 2 campaign insinuating that

Comments:
With the likes William Bennett and Bill O´Reilly (I hear) railing against the medical (and especially recreational) use of marijuana, we´re back to Harry Anslinger´s 1936, blaming all manner of social ills on a substance that does have legitimate medical uses. Reefer Madness, Version 2.0: Marijuana is as bad as global warming. It´ll cause birth defects and polar bear deaths, you know.

In a class in the early 70’s there was a discussion of the difference between drugs, in this case MJ and drinking.
I said for one the MJ is illegal and conviction of using that substance will limit your future. Second why do you drink or use MJ? I know scads of folks that have a drink or two to be social -- they do not get drunk, but I do not know anyone that smokes MJ without an intention to get high. To alter their perception of reality.
What happens to a person with an altered reality sense is as different as there are people, but they rarely act as they would have absent the factor that altered their sense of reality. So it does change things and from my observations not always for the good.

#1 raises some good points. Therefore we should negate the constitution, militarize our police, and jail anyone who uses drugs...

Well TR that just beats my statement to the article just above to death. No I do not think that and I could care less about what folks want to put into their systems. Just do not let your changes whether drunk or high invade on my space. A big surprise to users of booze and pot – despite what you feel it does not make you smarter or prettier.

How much of this tsuris could be avoided if students -- in this case, the male ones -- simply took to heart a piece of advice they should have received from their fathers, to wit: "A gentleman controls his urges."

News that Ebola has arrived in the United States from Liberia and that many people may have already been exposed to the disease was yet one more reminder that “they” cannot completely protect everyone. There was always the chance it would arrive. By plane, or over open border — but somewhow. The spread of the disease has been modeled by the CDC as a Markov chain which measures the probability of going from one state to the other. There was always a joint probability that someone from an Ebola zone could make their way across a series of paths to

When I read a recent Associated Press headline and the accompanying story, I realized I was living in an alternate universe. A universe where respect for police and the highly dangerous, selfless and thankless job we ask them to perform — be it in Tampa or elsewhere — is a pillar of civilized society. A universe of thoughts, beliefs and values that are now being perverted by rhetorical ambulance chasers in pursuit of populist glory. The headline read: “Obama Says Mistrust of Police Corroding America.” Then, the AP went on to report, the president believes the “widespread mistrust of law

TAMPA — No one can seem to remember the exact year Ku Klux Klan members donned white caps and stood in protest at opening night of the Tampa International Gay & Lesbian Film Festival. Was it 1990? 1992? “It was considered normal,” said Ed Lally, vice president of the festival board, who has attended every year since the festival started in 1989. “We expected it to happen sooner or later, so it didn’t stand out even then.” Today, though, normal has changed. The festival kicks off its 25th year at 6 p.m. Friday with a street party at Tampa Theatre

Pushing a boulder up the side of a mountain would have seemed like a good cardio workout for Sisyphus compared to the effort it takes to get voters to approve a tax increase these days. When that includes funding for something spelled r-a-i-l, well, we talk about something with a more realistic chance of happening — say, an invasion of little green body-snatchers from Mars. Yet, that is the task supporters of Greenlight Pinellas have undertaken. They hope a cynical, soured electorate will decide it’s worth paying an extra penny on the county’s sales tax in order to address current

Trains are great. No, really. In many ways, they are the best form of transportation going, especially if you are going from London to Paris or from the Key Bridge Marriott to the Federal Triangle or from the Atlanta airport to the Enterprise Rent-A-Car shop in Norcross, all of which I have done. Or from Glasgow to Mallaig aboard the West Highland Line in Scotland, which is on my bucket list. It’s human nature to want to relieve the pain and suffering of another human being. And there’s no denying the testimony of thousands of patients who say marijuana has helped them endure the nausea, the loss of appetite and other symptoms associated with the treatments for cancer, AIDS and other debilitating diseases. That explains the polls showing public support for Amendment 2, which would allow the use of marijuana in Florida by patients suffering from debilitating medical conditions. If the proposed amendment were that simple, we would favor its passage. But it’s not. Amendment 2 is a broadly written blueprint

As the November elections get closer, voters in Florida will be bombarded with advertisements for candidates left and right. Throw in issue advocacy advertisements, and you’d be forgiven for wishing that political money would just evaporate. America’s labor unions, which have denounced the U.S. Supreme Court for expanding the rights of nonprofit organizations to make public statements on election matters, would seem to be the bedraggled swing voter’s ally in taking back his television. Don’t be fooled: Labor unions are among the biggest spenders in national elections, employ the same “social welfare” group tactics they decry, and use forced dues

This is great news unless Barack Obama, a president with no discernible domestic or foreign policy, attempts to appoint Holder to the Supreme Court. Should that happen, hopefully some of the Democrats in the Senate now separating themselves from the foundering presidency of Obama will join with the Republicans

President Barack Obama has taken a lot of flack since his Sunday night “60 Minutes” interview, in which he blamed the intelligence community for his failure to tackle the threat posed by the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria. The Obama administration found itself scrambling on Tuesday to defend President Barack Obama for his lackluster 42% attendance record on daily intelligence briefings, a finding from a new report issued by the non-partisan Government Accountability Institute (GAI). Americans turned away from watching Obama even though he was being interviewed about the nation’s new war on ISIS. For example, Deadline Hollywood didn’t even mention Obama’s 60 Minutes interview when reporting on the drop in viewers. “With no football lead-in, CBS’ Sunday lineup fell from last week. Well, that didn’t take long. Just two weeks into the new season of “The View,” co-hosts Rosie O’Donnell and Whoopi Goldberg tore into each other during a commercial break — in front of their stunned studio audience. The spat erupted Thursday after Goldberg interrupted O’Donnell to go to a commercial break before the mother of five was finished commenting in a “Hot Topic” discussion about spanking children on the ABC gabfest. O’Donnell refuses to wear an earpiece to stay in contact with producers while the live show is airing, so she had no clue it was time to stop talking.

Sacramento, Calif. - Gov. A national coalition of plastic bag manufacturers immediately said it would seek a voter referendum to repeal the law, which is scheduled to take effect in July 2015. Under SB270, plastic bags will be phased out of large grocery stores starting next summer and convenience stores and pharmacies in 2016.
