Los Angeles considers cold

LOS ANGELES – Los Angeles is considering turning voting ballots into lottery tickets. With fewer than a fourth of voters showing up for recent local elections, the city´s Ethics Commission voted unanimously Thursday to recommend that the City Council consider a cash-prize drawing as an incentive to vote. Commission President Nathan Hochman suggests the prizes could be $25,000 or $50,000, saying a pilot program should be used first to find out the number and size of prizes that would bump up turnout. The Los Angeles Times reports (http://lat.ms/1uV1Ekw) that federal law prohibits payment for voting, but Ethics Commissioner Jessica Levinson says that statute

Comments:
Amazing. My how far we have fallen. The article states: "California law only prohibits money or gifts for votes for a particular candidate or measure, or to stay away from the polls." What about federal law? I can´t believe this would be legal.

If it were illegal under federal law, do you really think Holder would do anything to enforce the law? This is a good way to get idiots to vote - more than once.

I´ve always seen low voter turnout as a sign people intend to be content with the candidates that wind up elected. Of course, that doesn´t explain the two million pouting "conservatives" too proud to vote for Mitt Romney.

Massively stupid idea. So is absentee voting, btw. But should keep polls open for a couple of days, or over a weekend. If that´s a problem for the nationals, move the whole nation to the weekend.

As long as I´ve gone in at odd hours I have not had to wait to vote, basically ever, but at prime time I´ve seen some lines. Of course the local process is retarded and obsolete in twenty ways, and the poll workers are volunteers and average age 80.

"Be ready," the leader of ISIS warned in July 2012, "our war with you only began now." Even as President Obama´s campaign was congratulating itself for bringing U.S. troops home from Iraq, the leader of ISIS was declaring war on the U.S. homeland and promising an attack that would be worse than the one orchestrated by Osama bin Laden.
