David Cameron is prepared to supply weapons directly to Kurdish forces fighting jihadists from the Islamic State (Isis) in northern Iraq, in a move that risks drawing Britain back indirectly into the country´s conflict. In a significant intensification of British involvement in the Iraq crisis, the foreign secretary, Philip Hammond, will tell his EU counterparts in Brussels on Friday that Britain is prepared to join France in arming the Kurds. David Cameron and Nick Clegg agreed the plan at an emergency Cobra meeting. The move was immediately welcomed by the chancellor of the Kurdish Region Security Council, who had pleaded with

Well, at least the UK is doing the 0bama "wait & see" option. And, their weapons are going to the Kurds, not any Taliban or Al Qaeda run opposition. Smart. (0bama´s still recovering from where PIAPS buried the hatchet "in" him last night).

Bypass the corrupt Iraqi government and supply arms directly to our Kurdish allies. Gee - why didn´t we think of that?

And leave it to the Guardian:

The decision to pave the way for the possible supply of arms to Iraq means that the UK may once again bear responsibility – if only indirectly – for casualties in Iraq.

Security is being upgraded at the Australian parliament following "chatter" suggesting extremists could target it for attack. PM Tony Abbot said Australian Federal Police would assume responsibility for security at the site in Canberra. The move came a day after major anti-terrorism raids took place in Sydney. They were aimed at thwarting an alleged plan by Islamic State (IS) supporters to carry out killings in Australia, including an on-camera beheading. In recent weeks, IS - a militant Islamist movement which has seized vast areas of Iraq and Syria - has released video footage showing the beheadings of two American

The San Diego school district will return its armored military vehicle to the Department of Defense, school officials announced Thursday night. The district joins a list of agencies returning excess military equipment amid a national controversy over local law enforcement agencies using such equipment. The controversy erupted when police in Ferguson, Mo., used military equipment and tactics to quell protests after the shooting of an unarmed black man by a white police officer. Law enforcement agencies in Ferguson, like hundreds of others, had received military equipment at no cost under the Excess Property Program.

Australian Transport Safety Bureau Chief Commissioner Martin Dolan said on Friday that the first of three ships planning to scour the Indian Ocean for the plane should begin searching Sept. 30. The ship, Malaysia´s GO Phoenix, had been due to start the search next week, but needed some additional work in Jakarta. Officials have been refining their analysis of satellite data from the plane to figure out where it crashed.

Newark, N.J. - New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie is playing defense for embattled NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell. Christie said Thursday he strongly believes Goodell should stay in his job despite mounting criticism over his handling of a domestic violence incident involving former Baltimore Ravens running back Ray Rice. “He’s an outstanding man, an honest man in my interaction with him,” said Christie during an evening appearance on New Jersey 101.5 FM’s “Ask the Governor” call-in show, when asked whether Goodell should stay or go. What should the role of a bank be when it is forced to operate in areas torn apart by terrorist attacks? That was a central theme Thursday during closing arguments in a landmark terrorism-financing trial in Federal District Court in Brooklyn, pitting victims of terrorist attacks in the Middle East against Arab Bank. “Who decides who’s a terrorist?” said Shand S. Stephens, a lawyer representing the bank, whose headquarters are in Jordan. “The plaintiffs have accused, by my count, over 150 people, and 12 charitable organizations, and the Saudi Committee, of being Hamas-associated terrorists.

Ellison, who is believed to be the fifth-wealthiest man in the world, will be replaced by Mark Hurd and Safra Catz, Oracle said. After last month’s fatal police shooting of an unarmed black teenager, the city of Ferguson, Mo., postponed its August council meeting. Instead of holding the forum, it sent postage-paid comment cards to residents and asked them to mail their feedback. The Washington Post obtained copies of those cards after submitting a public records request. We’ve posted images of a few of them below. Some residents wrote that they weren’t happy with Ferguson’s mayor. Others said they appreciated the city’s police department. Some people said family members asked them to get out of Ferguson. Some said their friends won’t visit anymore.

Washington - As Gov. Chris Christie of New Jersey explores a 2016 presidential campaign, he is under growing pressure from his State Legislature to rejoin a regional cap-and-trade program that would limit New Jersey’s carbon emissions — and likely hurt his chances for the Republican nomination. Mr. Christie, who withdrew from the program in 2011 as he first considered running for president in 2012, remains adamant that New Jersey not participate in the nine-state Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative, even though the majority of state legislators say it would be in New Jersey’s economic and legal interests.
