Obama, Clinton party together:
No confirmation of a hug

Sun-Times [Chicago, IL], by Lynn Sweet

Washington - We know that President Barack Obama and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton partied together on Wednesday night on Martha’s Vineyard to mark the birthday of former Chicagoan Ann Dibble Jordan. We don´t know if they hugged. The hug--a joking suggestion from a spokesman for Clinton--was needed in the wake of her distancing herself from the foreign policy of her former boss, a move that annoyed the White House. “The President and First Lady also were happy to have the chance to spend time with Secretary Clinton and former President Clinton,” was all Principal Deputy Press Secretary Eric Schultz

Fox News, by Staff    Original Article

The U.S. military´s top officer said Wednesday that almost half of Iraq´s army is incapable of working against the Islamic State militant group, while the other half needs to be rebuilt with the help of U.S. advisers and military equipment. (Snip) Sectarianism has been a major problem for the Iraqi security forces for years and is in part a reflection of resentments that built up during the decades of rule under Saddam Hussein, who repressed the majority Shiite population, and the unleashing of reprisals against Sunnis after U.S. forces toppled him in April 2003. Sunni resistance led to the relatively brief rise of an extremist group called

The Minnesota Vikings issued a statement early Wednesday saying that running back Adrian Peterson must remain away from all team activities until his felony child abuse case is settled. The statement, from team owners Zygi and Mark Wilf, said that Peterson was being placed on the Exempt/Commissioner´s Permission list. The move was an about-face for the team, which reinstated Peterson to the active roster Monday after deactivating him following the All-Pro running back´s indictment Friday. "In conversations with the NFL over the last two days, the Vikings advised the League of the team´s decision to revisit the situation,"

Washington - The U.S. House of Representatives began debating legislation on Tuesday to authorize President Barack Obama´s plan to arm and train moderate Syrian rebels to fight Islamic State militants, and lawmakers said the measure would likely pass the full Congress by the end of this week. (Snip) House members were expected to vote to pass the amendment on Wednesday, congressional aides and lawmakers said. It would then be sent to the U.S. Senate for approval this week, before lawmakers leave Washington to spend the next six weeks campaigning for the Nov. 4 congressional elections.

Baghdad - Militia justice is simple, the fighters explained. “We break into an area and kill the ones who are threatening people,” said one 18-year-old fighter with Asaib Ahl al-Haq, a Shiite militia that operates as a vigilante force around Baghdad. (Snip) Once a leading killer of American troops, the militia is spearheading the fight against the Sunni extremists of the Islamic State, also known by the acronyms ISIS and ISIL. That means Asaib Ahl al-Haq and the United States military are now fighting on the same side, though each insists they will not work together. But the power and autonomy of Asaib Ahl al-Haq and other Shiite militias

The cardiac arrest leading to Joan Rivers´ death happened as the comedian´s personal doctor began performing a biopsy on her vocal cords, a source close to the death investigation told CNN. A staff member at Manhattan´s Yorkville Endoscopy clinic told investigators that the doctor, who has not been publicly identified, took a selfie photo in the procedure room while Rivers was under anesthesia, the source said. Rivers, 81, was at the clinic for a scheduled endoscopy by another doctor, gastroenterologist Dr. Lawrence Cohen. That procedure, intended to help diagnose her hoarse voice and sore throat, involved the insertion of a

Washington: The US Defence Department program accused of fuelling the militarisation of local law enforcement is stirring controversy again, this time for providing equipment and weapons to school police. Law enforcement agencies affiliated with at least 120 schools, colleges and universities have received gear through the program, according to a Washington Post review of data from 33 states. The items received include at least five grenade launchers, hundreds of rifles and eight mine-resistant, ambush-protected (MRAP) vehicles, the hulking machines designed to withstand the kind of roadside attacks seen in Iraq and

Major corporate sponsors are dishing out some heat to the NFL over its handling of domestic violence issues and other recent scandals — but most so far have stopped short of pulling their advertising. Budweiser became the largest and latest sponsor to speak out, saying Tuesday it was "disappointed and increasingly concerned" by the scandals. (Snip) While it fell shy of yanking its sponsorship, the strongly worded statement by the U.S. division of brewing giant Anheuser-Busch InBev NV said it was "not yet satisfied with the league´s handling of behaviors that so clearly go against our own company culture and moral code."

Republicans have found a way to combat Democrats’ “war on women” strategy by calling for more open access to contraception, Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal said Tuesday. GOP Senate candidates have made inroads in North Carolina and Colorado by saying the answer to this year’s Supreme Court decision ruling that companies cannot be forced to pay for employees’ contraceptive care is to make birth control medications available over the counter without a prescription. Pro-choice activists and Democrats have vehemently rejected that, arguing that birth control pills will actually become more expensive if offered over the

Istanbul, Turkey - American journalist Steven Sotloff began his last journey into Syria with a surprise gift for his fixer, Yosef Abobaker. It was a small camera. Washington - The current threat posed by the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria, or ISIS, will test not only the resolve and strategic judgment of America and its allies, but also our nation’s fidelity to a basic constitutional principle. Our Constitution reserves to Congress the power to declare war and designates our president as the commander in chief, but our recent history has been characterized by executive overreach and legislative abdication in the initiation of military action. The current crisis gives us an opportunity to restore the proper balance between the branches. America’s history since 2001 should compel us to fix the way

Washington - Militants for the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria have traveled to Mexico and are just miles from the United States. They plan to cross over the porous border and will “imminently” launch car bomb attacks. Democrats are now (very slightly) favored to hold the Senate majority on Nov. 4, according to Election Lab, the Post´s statistical model of the 2014 midterm elections. Election Lab puts Democrats´ chances of retaining their majority at 51 percent -- a huge change from even a few months ago when the model predicted that Republicans had a better than 80 percent chance of winning the six seats they need to take control.
