The Rise of 3-D Printed Guns
New York Times, by Nick Bilton

Original Article

Posted By:LittleHoodedMonk, 8/14/2014 12:20:53 AM

This week, instead of walking into a gun shop and handing over my credit card to buy firearms, bullets and grenades, I decided to try a different route: I downloaded highly detailed schematics — like blueprints for a house — of dozens of functional weapons and bullets. If I had the time, a little technical know-how or was willing to sit through tutorials online, I could buy a three-dimensional printer (which makes objects by spraying thin layers of plastic that become shapes) and print and assemble some of these guns. Among the files now sitting on my laptop are parts for an M16, AR-15, AK-47 and other semiautomatic guns.

Comments:
This can´t be good news for the "good guys." With these and other types of capabilities, one would think that 3-D printers should be regulated. The mind reels at terrorist making their suicide vests and the like from these machines.

Nick thinks he can make a flimsy handle for a real gun and from that he concludes teenagers all across America will be making firearms. I guess we need more than 20,000 gun ´control´ laws, right Nick? If only the NYT would do ONE article on the racist Sullivan laws or what is required to own a handgun in NY state, that would be a first. Meanwhile the NYT ignores teens beating people to death or stabbing them with screwdrivers.

Silliness at the premise. Criminals can get guns the same way they get drugs, other stolen goods, and any contraband. Why buy an expensive printer to make flimsy guns that are inherently less reliable than an illicit firearm one can readily purchase on the black market?

Grenades? In the first sentence this brain-donor shows his stupidity. Perchance he´s mocking those who own firearms? They don´t read the NYT anyway.

What Mr(?) Bilton doesn´t understand is that for about $20 in parts found at any hardware store, one can make a very effective zip gun that can be fired far more times than most printed guns made of plastic, yet the author doesn´t seem to be calling for the regulation of plumbing parts.

new names for the same old scare tactics.

One can build all kinds of weapons with all kinds of OLDER TECHNOLOGY.

Worse is the implication that a weapon of any kind is the problem.

Weapons are just tools to be used for good or ill depending on who wields them.

Gun laws seek to disarm those who are willing to obey a law. Unfortunately that is only the good folks.

Smaller folks, that that often means women, are at a disadvantage in a fight. Weapons can help those disadvantaged.

Thus many weapons are called Peacemaker, Equalizer et al.

I wonder if Nick Bilton has ever gone into a store to buy a weapon on his own or even held one in his hands.

I further wonder if LittleHoodedMonk, who seems troubled by this technology, has either.

until you can "print" steel (or its structural equivalent) you´re not going to make a functional firearm - but one that is more of a danger to the user and bystanders than the intended target

Washington - While the Islamic State group is getting the most attention now, another band of extremists in Syria — a mix of hardened jihadis from Afghanistan, Yemen, Syria and Europe — poses a more direct and imminent threat to the United States, working with Yemeni bomb-makers to target U.S. aviation, American officials say. It saddens me that 20 years after my sister Nicole’s murder, we are still seeing the same crimes, just different names, over and over again. The Ray Rice case reflects our misunderstanding of what domestic violence is, and the Oscar Pistorius case reminds me so much of what happened to Nicole: victims defending their partners, and batterers blaming the victim. What is most chilling to me about what I have seen in the coverage of Ray Rice is that he has not atoned for his actions; he seems more concerned with how he is now viewed. And it’s Janay Palmer who is apologizing for her part of being knocked out cold.

The image I have of “Girls” star Lena Dunham, judging by last season’s episodes of the HBO series, is that of a girl riding a bicycle in the Hamptons in a two-piece bathing suit that is two sizes too small. Exposing her body in all of its glory is part of the Dunham hard-sell — you either buy into her “freedom at any cost” philosophy, or you don’t. How curious, then, that the New York Times, in choosing Dunham for the cover of its Culture Issue, on sale this Sunday, decided to photograph her as a piece of neoclassical art. The photographer, Victoria Diehl, modeled the Dunham portrait on a bust of Pauline Bonaparte as Venus Victrix

Dallas - Good coaches are also teachers, and Tricia Roos is a good coach. The Bishop Lynch volleyball team has won three state championships in her seven years as head coach. This season should be particularly special, not only because Bishop Lynch is trying to win its third state title in a row, but also because Coach Roos is five-and-a-half months pregnant. But what should be a time of joy has become, as she puts it, "a teaching moment." Australia has raised its terror alert level to "high" for the first time since the national alert system was introduced in 2003. According to the four-level system, a reading of "high" means a terrorist attack "is likely," however the country´s Prime Minister Tony Abbott said no specific threat had been made. "This does not mean a terror attack is imminent, we have no specific intelligence of particular plots. What we do have is intelligence that there are people with the intent and capability to mount attacks," Abbott said at a press conference in Canberra on Friday.
