Here´s How to Dig Out
of This Stupid Sh*t
U.S. Foreign Policy

Daily Beast, by Leslie H. Gelb

Original Article

The usually uninformed American citizens can be forgiven for being mystified by the Mideast policy prescriptions of their leaders. President Barack Obama promises to stop genocide in Iraq and not to do “stupid s***,” meaning virtually anything that might actually stop the genocide. Hillary Clinton rightly proclaims that avoiding “stupid s***” does not a strategy make, though she, too, vigorously opposes stupid s***. And television’s favorite administration critics—Republican Senators John McCain and Lindsey Graham—continue their heartfelt advocacy of stupid s***, i.e. more bombs dropped on the bad guys and more arms supplied to the good guys, without any thought whatsoever

It bears repeating: Not being George Bush is not a foreign policy.

In this case - not being George Bush and being a complete imbecile has not worked very well.

GLASGOW — To most Americans, Scotland means golf, whisky and — if they go there — steady drizzle. Even to the millions of Americans whose surnames testify to their Scottish or Scotch-Irish ancestry, the idea that Scotland might be about to become an independent country is baffling. Yet, this week, a referendum could decide just that. With days remaining before the Scottish electorate votes on whether or not to remain in the United Kingdom, the result is too close to call. Born in Glasgow, but having spent most of my life in England and America, I am rather baffled, too.

Health Care Law Is Obama´s Gift

President Obama’s health care law is the gift that keeps on giving to the GOP. In 2010, of course, passage of the law powered the Republican gains of 62 seats in the House of Representatives and pickups of more than 700 state legislative seats across the nation. The law didn’t go into effect in time to hurt the president’s re-election bid in 2012, but it is making life extremely difficult for the president’s party in 2014. Cautious beltway pundit Stuart Rothenberg recently announced that he is “expecting a sizable Republican Senate wave” this year. He believes the GOP will pick up at

Through waves of European revolutions, grand reform movements, the building and dismantling of history’s greatest global empire, two world wars and the establishment of one of the world’s leading welfare states, the United Kingdom has enjoyed remarkable political stability, always evolving to meet challenges but simultaneously holding to the ancient constitutional structures and traditions that have united and protected its people in an uncommonly successful multi-ethnic state. That has been good for Great Britain and good for the world. Now, the country’s future is in question, as Scotland prepares to vote Thursday on whether to secede. Polls show a closely

5 lies that have shaped

If past presidents are remembered for their signature achievements, Obama will be remembered for his signature lie: “If you like your health care plan blah, blah, blah.” The reader knows the rest. Although the most consequential of Obama’s lies — it got him reelected — it’s far from his only prevarication. I’ve counted 75 significant lies since his campaign for president began, but that doesn’t begin to tally the casual fibs and hyperbole he spouts seemingly every day. Here are five that illustrate just how much Obama’s presidency is built on falsehoods. 5. “My father left my family when I was 2

Democrats have a lot to worry about in the midterm elections but one of their sturdiest bulwarks against a GOP rout in the fall has been support among women. They have held significant leads over Republicans among women by a number of polling measures. But the latest Wall Street Journal/NBC News Poll has some warning signs for Democrats who are counting on women to help them weather a tough political climate. An important bellwether is the question of which party voters would prefer to control Congress, and it has long been the case that men prefer a Republican Congress and women favor

“Now let’s make two things clear,” Barack Obama told the world on Wednesday, adopting a brisk schoolmaster’s tone. First, ISIS, the self-professed “Islamic state” that has taken over large parts of Syria and Iraq, is not actually Islamic. Why would he say that? Because, as Obama explained, “No religion condones the killing of innocents.”Since Obama is neither a Muslim nor a scholar, that judgement is above his pay grade, as he would put it. As Bernard Lewis, a great authority on Islam, puts it: “It is surely presumptuous for those who are not Muslims to say what is orthodox and

After winning the presidency, Andrew Jackson sent a message to Congress suggesting that the office be extended to six years but limited to one term. His message caused wild speculation that the first “people´s president” would not seek a second term. That led to a dramatic Jackson proclamation, in a letter to Pennsylvania Democrats, that the “call of the people” trumped his “personal inclination” and he could “not refuse to serve them.” The truth is, he was never not going to run. Jackson may have been the first Democrat to be elected as president. But his secretary of State and eventual vice president,

When President Obama sits down with congressional leaders this week to talk about fighting the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria — “ISIS” — they’ll probably not agree on anything, not even the proper name of the terrorist organization that now controls about one-third of Iraq and a larger part of Syria. The president insists on calling it “ISIL”, for “Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant.” The “Levant” — an archaic term — refers to the area off the Eastern Mediterranean Sea stretching from what is now Anatolia in Turkey, through Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, Israel and Egypt. Jim Webb could be Hillary Clinton´s worst nightmare. The former one-term Virginia senator and Vietnam War veteran is making sounds about running for president as a Democrat. He was in Iowa last month; a New Hampshire trip may be in the offing, and he´s giving a major speech at the National Press Club in two weeks. He seems an improbable candidate. He has taken illiberal positions, was President Ronald Reagan´s Navy secretary, has few relationships within the Democratic Party, and has no serious fundraising network. What he does possess is a long-held and forceful opposition to U.S. interventions in Iraq and Libya,

Remember the 2012 Republican presidential debate in which ABC´s George Stephanopoulos, seemingly out of nowhere, pressed Mitt Romney repeatedly for his views on contraception? After a contentious back-and-forth, a frustrated Romney declared, "Contraception, it´s working just fine, just leave it alone." In the 2014 midterms, Democratic candidates have taken up where Stephanopoulos left off, and they´re certainly not leaving contraception alone. In some key Senate races, Democrats have even charged that Republicans would "make birth control illegal." (That´s from Colorado Democratic Sen. Mark Udall, directed at GOP opponent Rep. Cory Gardner.) But now, instead of Romney´s

Civil rights leaders and community activists cheered when Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr. announced on Thursday that the Justice Department would be investigating the Ferguson Police Department for possible civil rights violations—a move prompted by the August 9 shooting death of an African-American teen at the hands of one of the St. Louis suburb’s white police officers. The reaction is understandable. The Justice Department’s civil rights division—which is investigating whether Ferguson’s police force engaged in a pattern and practice of abuses—has for decades been instrumental in pursuing justice in matters and places where local action would have been unlikely.

Democrats are now (very slightly) favored to hold the Senate majority on Nov. 4, according to Election Lab, the Post´s statistical model of the 2014 midterm elections. Election Lab puts Democrats´ chances of retaining their majority at 51 percent -- a huge change from even a few months ago when the model predicted that Republicans had a better than 80 percent chance of winning the six seats they need to take control. (Worth noting: When the model showed Republicans as overwhelming favorites, our model builders -- led by George Washington University´s John Sides -- warned that the model could and
