Meet the Beer Bottle Dictator
Daily Beast, by Tim Mak

Widely regarded as an eccentric bureaucrat, Kent ‘Battle’ Martin approves essentially every beer label in the United States, giving him awesome power over a huge industry. For years, one man has approved virtually every beer label design in the United States. Among brewers, he’s a tyrant. A legend. A pedantic pain in the ass. Brewers and legal experts speak of him in hushed tones, with equal parts irritation and reverence. “He’s the king of beer. His will is law,” said one lawyer who works with him regularly. The lawyer asked to remain anonymous, for fear of crossing the beer specialist. “There’s one dude in

There are beer-label dictators great and small. An avid homebrewer, one of my beer labels once got me banned from a homebrew forum run by Austin TX, liberals. I´d been trying for some time to make a clone of "Duvel" (Flemish dialect for "Devil") ale, but it always came out too dark in color. Finally, I decided just to go with the darker color and name it "Prince of Darkness", giving it a label that featured a character with horns, tail, and goatee that looked suspiciously like a caricature of our friend Zippy. When forum members were invited to send images of their labels, this submission was quickly banned.

What a refreshing article! It felt soooo good to laugh. The story about Weed actually had me laughing out loud. I must find out where I can buy some Weed(beer that is). Afterall “A friend In Weed Is a Friend Indeed.”

I have overdosed on Obama news, Hillary news, ISIS(frightening-as-heck) news; and now we have riot news in St. Louis.

Maybe the "Weed" brewer could donate kegs and cases of their product to some of the above - maybe it would make them "chill out" for a while.

Commercial aircraft chartered by US

WASHINGTON – U.S. officials say a commercial aircraft chartered by the U.S.-led military in Afghanistan was re-routed to Iran, apparently because of a mix-up over its flight plan. The plane was flying from Bagram airfield north of Kabul to Dubai on Friday. The normal flight path goes through Iranian airspace. One official says Iranians radioed the plane´s crew to say they did not have the proper paperwork and to return to Bagram. The pilots said they did not have enough fuel to return so the Iranian authorities told them to land in Iran. A senior State Department official says the issue appears to

On Thursday, fast food and home healthcare workers across the country walked away from their jobs and joined the “Fight for $15,” an SEIU-backed movement demanding a $15 minimum wage and unabridged union rights for fast food workers. In the past, organizers and participants have largely avoided trouble with law enforcement. This time, however, protesters came armed with a mandate from on high to engage in civil disobedience to the point of arrest. In Detroit, a crowd of about 200 protesters locked arms across the street fronting a local McDonald’s, causing a traffic backup and a shortage of officers available for school

By a certain measure, the last people who believed in the marriage of Bob McDonnell, the former Governor of Virginia, and his wife, Maureen, were the twelve jurors who, on Thursday, found them guilty of public corruption. Their lawyers had tried to argue that the Governor and his wife were so estranged that they could not conspire to sell official favors: they floated past each other in the executive mansion in separate pockets of misery. The governor did favors for a man named Jonnie Williams, who sold a nutritional supplement called Anatabloc; Maureen let Williams buy her expensive clothes. But

Despite the increasingly grim outlook for their party in the 2014 midterms, conventional wisdom holds that Democrats will head into 2016 favored to win the presidency for the fifth time in seven elections. There are reasons for this optimism. Democrats have carried the national popular vote in five of the last six elections, and like Republicans in the years of their dominance of the White House from 1952 to 1988, Democrat control of California gives them a natural head start to win the Electoral College. Democrats appear likely to unify behind a nominee, Hillary Clinton, who would start out not

They say bad news comes in threes, and it surely did yesterday. The American people were minding their own business when suddenly three of the most frightening figures in American politics, shameless hacks who couldn’t park a bicycle straight, suddenly began babbling about running for president in 2016. And they’re all from Massachusetts. But where else would they be from? I said they were incompetent. First it was John Kerry on Wednesday in D.C. with several other former secretaries of state, saying, in what passes for a jocular tone, “I’m sort of thinking 2016, OK?” No, it’s not OK. The vindictive special prosecutor used Humpty Dumpty’s logic to say statutes say the opposite of their plain meaning in order to charge the governor with a crime for exercising his lawful veto. If a popular sitting governor can be indicted on such a flimsy basis, then every one of us is vulnerable. The facts are straightforward: the police arrested

A C.I.A. station chief reportedly stopped five American commandos from responding immediately to the attack on a U.S. diplomatic base in Benghazi, Libya, in 2012 that left four Americans dead, it was reported Thursday. “13 Hours,” a book written by the five commandos that is due out next week, says the C.I.A chief had them wait in a car for 20 minutes while the attack took place about a mile away, according to The New York Times, which obtained a copy . Meet the new enemy, same as the old enemy. NATO leaders meeting in Wales this week have all but declared the Cold War back on, and Russia has responded in kind. Just six months after Russia annexed Crimea and followed that with efforts to destabilize the rest of Ukraine, relations between the alliance and Moscow have entered the deep freeze. Among the issues on the table at the two-day summit are plans to reinforce NATO´s military presence in Eastern Europe and measures aimed at deterring further Russian moves on Ukraine, which is not a NATO member. It´s a stunning turnaround from just

In the early morning hours of May 2, 2011, an elite team of 25 American military and intelligence professionals landed inside the walls of a compound just outside the Pakistani city of Abbottabad. CIA analysts had painstakingly tracked a courier to the compound and spent months monitoring the activity inside the walls. They’d concluded, with varying levels of confidence, that the expansive white building at the center of the lot was the hideout of Osama bin Laden. They were correct. And minutes after the team landed, the search for bin Laden ended with a shot to his head. The primary objective

It isn’t so much that former Massachusetts governor and 2012 Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney was a prophet. Just that he had read a book or two. Throughout the course of the campaign, the turnaround artist and blue state Republican issued some dire but necessary warnings to the American public about how the geopolitical environment was changing for the worse. In 2012, Romney called it “troubling” and “alarming” that Barack Obama had essentially appeased the Russian bear by offering concessions like the withdrawal of interceptor missile and radar installations in Eastern Europe without reciprocity from Moscow. He said that Russia’s actions have

Barack Obama stands apart from other modern American Presidents in many ways. (snip)the widespread view that he is the coolest President ever. This supernal coolness is not new. In his autobiography, Dreams From My Father, the President wrote that in his teenage years “I tried my best to be cool at all times” (p. 82). However, leaving aside the contradiction inherent in trying to be cool, it is possible that Barack Obama’s teenage experiences may have left him psychologically, and perhaps even neurologically, incapable of performing fundamental tasks of his current position. Last Wednesday, at a ceremony to appoint Texas lawyer Shaarik Zafar to be special representative to Muslim communities, Secretary of State John Kerry said it was the United States’ Biblical “responsibility” to “confront climate change,” including to protect “vulnerable Muslim majority counties.” Kerry said Scripture, in particular the Book of Genesis, makes clear it is our “duty” to protect the planet and we should look at Muslim countries “with a sense of stewardship of earth,” adding, “That responsibility comes from God.” And here you thought all along that “Uncle Joe” was the resident crazy in the Obama administration.

Maybe the news that a second American has been beheaded will force President Obama to recognize he has no more compelling priority today than stopping the Islamic State and its bloodletting. In its latest barbarity, ISIS aimed to project American weakness to the world. Just before he beheaded Steven Sotloff, the ISIS executioner explained the butchery this way: I’m back, Obama, and I’m back because of your arrogant foreign policy towards the Islamic State, because of your insistence on continuing your bombings.?.?. It was only a few weeks ago that Gannett did the same. USA Today is Gannett´s flagship publication and enjoys the highest circulation of any other American newspaper. The home-cooked meal has long been romanticized, from ’50s-era sitcoms to the work of star food writer Michael Pollan, who once wrote, “far from oppressing them, the work of cooking approached in the proper spirit offered a kind of fulfillment and deserved an intelligent woman’s attention.” In recent years, the home-cooked meal has increasingly been offered up as the solution to our country´s burgeoning nutrition-related health problems of heart disease and diabetes. But while home-cooked meals are typically healthier than restaurant food, sociologists Sarah Bowen, Sinikka Elliott, and Joslyn Brenton from North Carolina State University argue that the stress that
