#IfTheyGunnedMeDown protests portrayal of
black youth after Michael Brown´s death

New York Daily News, by Michael Walsh

If you were killed by a police officer, how would the media respond? Outrage over 18-year-old Michael Brown´s violent death over the weekend wasn´t confined to St. Louis — nor did it stop at his death. Many were upset with how news outlets portrayed Brown, who was unarmed, after a cop shot and kill him Saturday in Ferguson. Young African-Americans started posting two pictures of themselves to Twitter — one more wholesome than the other— with a simple question: "If they gunned me down, which picture would they use?" The hashtag #IfTheyGunnedMeDown exploded in popularity along with the argument that

Comments:
I wonder who created this "grassroots" campaign.

Which photo would the media use? In the case of Trayvon Martin, they used the innocent child photo instead of the one where he´s flashing gang signs and posing with handguns. For that matter, if there are no photos of you posing with weapons and drugs and flashing gang signs, and if you´re the type who stays out of trouble, none of this would be an issue, would it?

This will be a reserrection of Trayvon leading up to the November election. It worked before Democrats have nothing but the Race Card and it will come into play to stir up the base.

Note to black youths: There is an entire world out there, where people keep their pants pulled up, speak in complete sentences and after working hard to get an education, they go to work everyday. For this they EARN a paycheck, which gives them freedom to live in nice places, purchase nice cars, send their children to good schools, so that they too can realize a good life.
I know that when asked, most of you believe America is about 50% black and 50% white.
The Government census of 2010 shows blacks as 12% of the population. Surprised?
The time is fast approaching when we can no longer tolerate bad behavior such as fathering babies you do not support, and provide you with "free stuff".
It might be time to learn the difference between sink or swim. What will you do when that government check doesn´t come next month? What about your mother´s check? Your baby momma´s check. Think about it.
Is the time approaching for a good dose of Tough Love? A healthy culture has social mores that all members follow. Just like the military. They dress according to certain standards, follow all rules..conform to expected standards, there are no exeptions for whites or blacks.
So learn the language, study hard, dress for success and keep your nose clean and you´ll be judged accordingly.

I read this feed yesterday. It´s very powerful. There needs to be an honest investigation done. Even from the police reports of the incident that have been published this shooting appears unjustified.

But everything is going to be alright, almost as if on queue, the Rev. Al Sharpton will be in town today to have a press conference and "heal" the community. Of course, the soon to be sainted Michael Brown will be portrayed as one has come to expect from both the national and our local media here in St. Louis.

As poster #3 noted, a day of reckoning is coming. In the food service world I´ve worked with many blacks I consider friends that do work hard to provide financially and as an example to their families. Unfortunately, have also worked with many that have the thug mentality and gimme attitude often seen when things like this happen.

That that many people have the time (read unemployed) to be protesting and rioting at all hours of the day is a symptom our media refuses to address.

If they wonder why they are portrayed poorly, perhaps they should look at what they´ve done in response to the shooting. If they think rioting and burning down stores endears them to the general public, they´re wrong.

When this first came out I read that the teen had been picked out and was put in the patrol car and he tried to get the officers gun away from him and was shot during the struggle. Can anyone tell me the true events of what led up to the shooting?

Interesting and potentially powerful use of social media. I think back to when I was a young man - the picture they would have shown was a young hippie-type with hair down to his butt and a full mustache at 17. What would the public have thought of me then? However, I was an above-average student, didn´t get in trouble and spent a good deal of my time at home reading Robert Heinlein books (which warped me enough, TYVM).

Unfortunately, other posters are right, as well. If they´re going to be posing throwing gang signs or holding weapons, that plays even more into the ugly thug stereotype, and rioting when things don´t go your way further marginalizes those who may support you.

Part of my problem is, I don´t trust the police in these matters all the time, either. They´ve done enough over the past couple decades to hurt their own image.

They said on the radio that he was shot multiple times 35 feet from the police car, not in the police car, and was unarmed. No matter what the kid´s background was (and none of us know yet) it certainly doesn´t sound, if 35 feet from the police car is true, that using deadly force was necessary. What happened in those few minutes of the altercation between the cop and Brown is all that matters. Was shooting him even once necessary?

None of us were there. None of us know what happened.
What´s sickening is that we will never know because everyone with an agenda will call this incident through the prism of their own bias.
And I´m talking about the media here, folks, the free press that´s supposed to serve the truth - the media I have grown to despise because they won´t do their job.

I am tired of people saying that this kid was unarmed I may be almost 70 and pretty beat up by life, but if you think I am unarmed just because you do not see a gun in my hand you are a fool.

There are no dangerous weapons, only dangerous people. (ok if a weapon is broken it could be dangerous to the user)

We’re being had. Again. For six years, President Obama has endeavored to will the country into accepting two pillars of his alternative national-security reality. First, he claims to have dealt decisively with the terrorist threat, rendering it a disparate series of ragtag jayvees. Second, he asserts that the threat is unrelated to Islam, which is innately peaceful, moderate, and opposed to the wanton “violent extremists” who purport to act in its name. Political pollsters have a tough job. They have to create formulas to determine if the person they are interviewing is likely to vote, and it is within this calculation that their reputations are made. Typically, those who are likely to vote in an off-year election are pretty set. They are the people who always vote in elections — with some motivated by specific issues. In a wave election, the number of those motivated by specific issues escalates, changing the electoral landscape as the candidates who are beneficiaries of this increased participation sweep to victory. The 2014 election is rapidly looking like something new
