The New York Times announced Monday that longtime columnist Maureen Dowd will join the New York Times Magazine as a staff writer, part of an overhaul of the glossy Sunday feature spearheaded by former Texas Monthly editor Jake Silverstein. She will still write her weekly op-ed column, which is largely about how the presidency fails to be like in the movies. “Maureen is one of The Times’s signature writers. Period,” Silverstein said in a statement. “And as we work toward a redesign that will put new emphasis on stylish, long-form narratives, she’ll be a brilliant addition to our team. Oracle said Larry Ellison, its co-founder and longtime CEO, will be stepping down, effective immediately. Ellison, who is believed to be the fifth-wealthiest man in the world, will be replaced by Mark Hurd and Safra Catz, Oracle said. In an unusual move, Hurd and Catz will both be named CEO of the company—not co-CEOs. (Snip) The two-time university drop-out created the biggest business software company in the world, and has taken on competitors like IBM and Microsoft to help define the modern technological age. Still, despite these successes, Ellison has drawn some public ire in recent years. In September 2013,

The U.S.-based Blue Coat company has issued a statement distancing itself from a project to monitor Twitter, Facebook, and Skype in Egypt, following a BuzzFeed News report. Egyptian officials had told BuzzFeed News that a company called See Egypt had won a tender to begin providing the government with a surveillance system that would allow them to comb through data from Skype, Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube, among others. In interviews, the Egypt-based SeeEgypt called itself a “sister company” to Blue Coat, and listed the company as one of their affiliates. Now, Blue Coat has issued a response saying

After last month’s fatal police shooting of an unarmed black teenager, the city of Ferguson, Mo., postponed its August council meeting. Instead of holding the forum, it sent postage-paid comment cards to residents and asked them to mail their feedback. The Washington Post obtained copies of those cards after submitting a public records request. We’ve posted images of a few of them below. Some residents wrote that they weren’t happy with Ferguson’s mayor. Others said they appreciated the city’s police department. Some people said family members asked them to get out of Ferguson. Some said their friends won’t visit anymore.

American servicemen are getting out of shape, a group of retired military leaders has warned. According to a new study around 12 per cent of soldiers, sailors, airmen and women are now obese – an increase of 61 per cent over the past dozen years. The report compiled by Mission Readiness, a group of 450 former admirals and generals, said that the military had seen an “unprecedented rise” in injuries caused by poor nutrition and lack of physical activity. The armed forces sacked 5,600 people for being out of shape in 2012. The problem is costing the military $1.5 billion (£920 million) annually in health care and finding replacements,

Washington - As Gov. Chris Christie of New Jersey explores a 2016 presidential campaign, he is under growing pressure from his State Legislature to rejoin a regional cap-and-trade program that would limit New Jersey’s carbon emissions — and likely hurt his chances for the Republican nomination. Mr. Christie, who withdrew from the program in 2011 as he first considered running for president in 2012, remains adamant that New Jersey not participate in the nine-state Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative, even though the majority of state legislators say it would be in New Jersey’s economic and legal interests.

But clarity of a historic nature emerged just a few yards from the first tee, where the Royal and Ancient Golf Club, often called the sport’s spiritual home, voted overwhelmingly to admit its first female members.
