What All This Bad

A terrifying jihadist group is conquering and butchering its way across big swaths of Iraq and Syria. Planes are falling out of the sky on what seems like a weekly basis. Civilians are being killed in massive numbers in the Israel-Gaza conflict. Others are falling prey to Ebola in West Africa. The world, in short, is falling apart. That’s how it feels, at least, to those of us who sit at a blessed remove from the death and destruction, but who are watching every bloody moment of it via cable news and social media. It raises an important question: In an

The world is not falling apart. Most of the planet is doing far better than ever before. The sections of violence and destruction are merely the result of intentional enabling by a Dear Leader who wants his nation cut down to size. That can be reversed by electing a rational, well-intentioned president next time. What the world should fear is that that won´t happen.

Obama had said a few weeks ago the world is more tranquil than it was 5 years ago. Had George Bush said this, the leftist media will still be reporting, daily, how utterly clueless George Bush was. Not one challenge by the liberal media to Odumbo about what he said. I think they are shell shocked how stupid Obama really is.

Disagree with #1

The world has been falling apart at a quickening rate. Sure there have been times of horror in the past, especially our "world wars" and our own war between the states-- revolutions and epidemics.

Why is it different now? Simply because the increase in greed and avarice at the highest levels of power coupled with the disregard for the sanctity of life and the erosion of moray in general is setting the tone for a world where even the most lurid headlines have become commonplace and shock us no more.

When despair sets in it´s easy to blame it on "all this bad news"-- but the source of the bad news, the reason for the slide of society into the cesspool can be blamed on real evil.

Bad news can either numb us or move us to action to try to restore morality and sound law. It can stir us to fight for human dignity or we can give in to hopelessness.

Because I put my trust in God above all things, all this bad news does two things: It makes me trust Him more, and it moves me to do all I can to fight evil at every level-- especially the evil that resides in me.

FTA: "And then there’s the example that probably screams loudest in the liberal imagination: George W. Bush drummed up support for the war in Iraq, which at the time of the U.S. invasion sat at 75 percent, by painting a world in which Al Qaeda and its radical affiliates posed an existential threat to the Western world."

Was this not true? Obama´s world confirms it. The news is informing us exactly what a truly terrifying threat radical Islam is to this world. They are not making this stuff up. The brutality and violence are escalating because Obama does not want to acknowledge the root of all this evil. He is incapable of leading this country and has given up any moral authority we had on the world stage. By his weakness and ambivalence he is enabling evil. Our enemies rejoiced when he was elected. Obama has made the world a very dangerous place. Burying your head in the sand will not change it either. You must confront evil.

Sorry, but I´m not nearly on board Ms. Hyphenated´s study.

...when people are led to believe things are falling apart, it affects their decision-making and their politics — whether or not their pessimism is warranted.

Pessimism today is usually warranted, Ms. Hyphen.

We already know from political-psychological research that the more threatened people feel, the more likely they will be to support right-wing policies.

And this is a bad thing? Why say "right wing" rather than "conservative"? People instinctively know that conservatives are more protective and reactive to threats on America. That is simply common sense, good news, and reasonable conclusions.

And people who believe in the concept of unmitigated evil appear more likely to support torture and other violent policies.

What is wrong with addressing those who want to blow us up with violent means? Are we supposed to serve them haute cuisine and talk nice to them instead? When a bomb is about to go off, you don´t negotiate; you use whatever means necessary to stop the bomb.

“You can’t change the externals,” she said. “You have to get some control mentally.” What’s most important is “getting a handle on why you get anxious and worried about things that probably aren’t going to happen, or knowing what your triggers are.”

How does she conclude that those things won´t happen? This is dangerous fatalistic thinking; We are supposed to just suck it up and be passive, placing more emphasis on self-awareness rather than changing what are clearly bad situations? She is intimating that activism is futile and that understanding ourselves (typical liberal psychoclaptrap) is more important for stress-reduction than actually doing something about it.

Granted, there are some things we are helpless to control, such as the immdediate situation where our representatives don´t represent us, but you don´t just sit back and analyze your own reactions.

I do agree with turning off the news now and then to take a break from the negativity, but to avoid it is to play ostrich in a world where not knowing what is going on is far more dangerous that knowing.

Our country is already populated by know-nothings, from the street to the White House. We don´t need more uninformed people. We need people who are less self-absorbed and more informed. If we get slightly stressed out about it, so what? We´re never supposed to get stressed out?

Stress is a good motivator. So is anger. Not everything good that gets done is done because people avoid stress. It gets done because they are angry at injustice, angry at being lied to, angry at despotism, angry at foolhardy policies, and damn angry at the man in the White House who triggered the demise of America´s credibility and military capabilities.

This study need not have been done at all. We know why we are upset and we know that not watching the news will probably stop us from being upset. But it would also place us at a disadvantage. The balancing act she is proposing makes no sense.

And while I am at it, the world really is a nasty, evil place, made more so by generations who have eschewed honor, decency, delayed-gratification, sanctity, accountability, decorum, and God. He has rules.

While pockets of goodness and decency exist throughout American and the world, we are hemmed in by people who are just plain bad, and that includes some "children". It is past due that we realize that we indeed can change things but it takes hard work, long planning and decent men and women -- things that are in short supply these days.

Love your ´rant,´ especially about us needing more informed citizens. Have you ever seen the man on the street interviews and how shocking it is that the average person knows so little about what is going on. If they don´t see it on Twitter or whatever else it is they have going on, they don´t know about it. Rude awakening coming soon.

The world has always had pockets of evil, but what is different now is that it´s spreading unchecked across the entire planet. Indeed it´s clear that "something wicked this way comes." And unfortunately for this country, our President not only has no interest in stopping it, but he´s even dropping our defenses and opening up our borders so it can enter more easily.

Bottom line, if you don´t read about it or see it on tv, you won´t know how bad things are. Such a skewed premise. As if we are not living the Obama nightmare that touches every aspect of our everyday lives. The cost of food, gas, medicine, etc.

Although...perhaps I will use this article to convince my dr.´s office that they need to turn off the ubiquitous CNN to save my health and sanity.

I think that all the "bad news" is most upsetting to Conservatives because we tend to want to DO SOMETHING rather than sit around waiting until a crises forces action...OR...waiting for someone else to bail us out.

I don´t mean that we should "rush to war" or not attempt to recruit our allies but, SOMEBODY has to LEAD.

The Socialist (aka Democrat) "Grasshopper" in the White House is the key to my nervousness. He plays, partys and vacations while Winter approaches rapidly.

We Conservative "Ants" plan, set goals and work toward them in the hopes that we may never NEED to tap into the "Rainy day fund" but assured that it will be there if the day comes that we do.

From this flat lined (for most of us) economy, to the horrors in the Middle East and Africa, the lies, inaction, and ineptitude of this administration... AND...the fact that there don´t seem to be an HONEST Democrat in the country fuels my greatest fears for our future.

Agreed #1, the planet, as a whole, is doing better than ever. However, the left is in charge of America, and we should be very afraid that the American electorate won´t elect a "well-intentioned president next time". In 2012, we had a very capable, well-intentioned candidate, and America said no. 2012 was a very important election, and the world is reaping the consequences of our stupidity. I don´t have much hope we will get it right in the near future either.

The entire article is nonsensical theory and opinion. One of the worst lines:

"We already know from political-psychological research that the more threatened people feel, the more likely they will be to support right-wing policies. And people who believe in the concept of unmitigated evil appear more likely to support torture and other violent policies."

If the above were true, it would mean that over half of the American people were fat, dumb and happy, didn´t listen to the news and think that life is just peachy under Dictator Obama. Oh, wait... Just because half of us are clueless idiots doesn´t mean that the world is not in deep trouble. Just because we are not being threatened with MS-13 gangs in our neighborhoods and are not being fired upon with AK-47s today doesn´t mean it will not happen tomorrow. This polling process has its limitations.

Rant appreciated. I have 3 close conservative friends who, in the last few months, have basically given up watching or reading any news to avoid stress. The problem wasn´t their lack of motivation, but rather their feeling of complete helplessness because we appear to have no cohesive organization or leader.
Anyway, your rant is mine #5. And I suspect it´s most of ours. So, thanks.

But #1.....I havd to worry because I see so many who receive checks from the Government and they´ll vote for SATAN to keep those checks coming. I have to say......my job requires me to be in Court often and the Judge became frustrated because EVERY SINGLE case was a person who was on DISABILITY. He was so frustrated that day, he asked the question, "Tell me, who is NOT on disability here today?" I rarely take medication, but once last year, I had to go on antibiotics for bronchitis.....I was shocked to see a line of elderly and young people waiting for their drugs and paying with their Government CARD and getting boxes filled with drugs! Seems to me, it doesn´t get better, it´s getting much worse. Here I am a SS and still working full time and I see so many living off (SLAVES) to this government with no concern for anyone (including our country) but themselves.

For #1 and #12; please go to www.usdebtclock.org and look at the numbers as they quickly increase; not just US numbers but the rest of the world´s. Just stop and look at them for a minute. All those numbers, especially debt and especially the currency and credit derivatives are a result of something and that something is not that the world is doing pretty well except for a few small places. And a vote that elects a conservative, hell a vote that elects the Lord Himself, would make absolutely no difference. Truth, facts, data are not ignored, they are hated by most people and the results of that hatred is yet to happen, and a small teaser of coming future results can be seen at the above website. If you´re believers, read Romans 1 and the first verse of chapter 2 then ask yourself who Paul is talking about and who he is talking to. Until that gets fixed, all this "bad" stuff is academic, promised to happen by God and will only get worse.

All the problems of this country can be traced to Obama and the democratic party. Get rid of them and return to American values and common sense. We pay excellent salaries for people who claim to be doing their job. Apparently they are not, so fire them. But no, everyone protests, even the GOP, we cannot possibly fire incompetents. Oh no, don´t do they, says the GOP and democrats. No, no way.

Now, because the march of ISIS would destroy forever the meme of Islam as a religion of peace, they are editing out the be headings and the religious cleansing.

The premise of the story, as I read it, is that Americans are fed an neverending stream of bad news for the purpose of drawing their sustained interest in a crowded field of news outlets while driving certain civic/political viewpoints. What would Dr. Goebbels give for the current distribution of news, and the compliance of Journo-listas and the like?

FTA: How can we fight back against the unnecessary coarsening of our outlook that may be occurring every time we glance at one of our gadgets? The simplest technique is, as McNaughton-Cassill put it, to “Just turn it off.” That is, take a break from the news. Switch off CNN and shut down TweetDeck for awhile and don’t sleep next to your phone.

Does anyone disagree with that advice? Turn off Big Brother´s propaganda meatgrinder. That´s not to be uninformed - it´s to become better informed by using outlets whose "information" is more critically absorbed.

#6, My adult daughter asked me just a few days ago why I paid so much attention to politics and world events when it seems to stress me out. I told her, "I felt someone in the family needs to know what is going on, what the truth is about our world today." I have three adult kids, two of which don´t pay attention beyond the surface level. The one that did pay attention, in detail like me, got too stressed out, he had to limit his attention.
I really would rather no know all the bad things that are going on, but my nature is to face things head on and not live in denial. I am like most here, caring about the world we leave our children and grandchildren and looking for opportunities to turn things around.
I do believe that putting in a conservative as President would provide one opportunity. By 2016 people may cry "uncle" and let the pendulum swing back to the "right" side.

What it´s doing to us is making us an angry and frustrated society, aggressive and intolerant, threatened and fearful, and that´s the ones who care. Everybody else is at the mall, or the beach, or at the movies. The second group frustrates the first group almost as much as those who are proactive in destroying the values and standards we hold dear. Our electoral process is fraught with fraud and intimidation, and for many of us voting for the lesser of two evils is still voting for evil, but we are compelled to slow the slide. Bad news is what we expected with the election of someone so manifested in wrong thinking, we knew what would happen. So here it is - know it - work to defeat it - inform those who will listen - and talk to God. "God is our refuge and our strength, our very present help in trouble." Ps 46:1 To despair serves evil.

PRINCETON, NJ -- Registered voters are more likely to view their choice of candidate in this year´s midterm elections as a message of opposition (32%) rather than support (20%) for President Barack Obama. That 12-percentage-point margin is similar to what Gallup measured for Obama in 2010 and George W. Bush in 2006, years in which their parties performed poorly in the midterm elections.(Snip for graph) Gallup first asked this question in 1998, the year Republicans were moving toward impeaching President Bill Clinton for lying about his affair with a White House intern. That year, when Clinton´s approval rating was 63%,

Most Texas abortion clinics shut down

ATLANTA — Texas, America’s second-most populous state behind California, saw 13 of its last abortion clinics turn away women on Friday, after a federal appeals court upheld a law that practically guarantees that only a handful of clinics will remain open in the state. The strictest-of-its-kind Texas law requires abortion providers to build hospital-grade facilities and obtain sometimes impossible-to-get hospital admitting privileges. After signed into law last year by Gov. Rick Perry (R), the law forced most of the 41 clinics operating to close. Thursday’s ruling wiped out a brief victory this summer for abortion rights proponents,

The president promises to lawlessly amnesty millions of illegal aliens on his own say-so, enabling them to get work cards, Social Security numbers, driver’s licenses, EITC, foreign travel documents, and the rest. But there are executive powers that he really does possess that he’s not using. Senator Sessions has helpfully provided a number of “lawful, constitutional executive actions” that the president should already be undertaking but isn’t: Complete the border fence that Congress has previously passed into law; Create the exit-entry system to track foreign visa-holders, which Congress has repeatedly mandated; Cancel visas

With Ebola making its way to the United States, people are rushing to find more information on the deadly disease. The Centers for Disease Control released a new chart on how contagious Ebola is compared to other diseases. The results may surprise you, according to IJReview. What you’re seeing is an evaluation of how contagious the Ebola virus actually is compared to previous epidemics, namely: Hepatitis C, HIV, SARS, Mumps, and Measles. As Michaeleen Doucleff reported, these little icons of pink and red people reflect the disease’s relative R0 or R(nought) scores. The red person is the disease carrier, and the pink people

Should we be worried about Ebola? That’s the question on the minds of many Americans given the first documented case on U.S. soil this week. And now there is a second possible case, someone having contact with Thomas Duncan, the first U.S. case of Ebola. Thomas Frieden, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reassures us, “I have no doubt that we’ll stop this in its tracks in the U.S.” President Obama also told us two weeks ago that “the chances of an Ebola outbreak here in the United States are extremely low.” Tell that to the 100 Texans who

Commencement speeches can be amusing, inspiring or, in the worst (some would say even the best) case, a bit dull. Schools tend to choose corporate CEOs, politicians and celebrities to send off the graduating class with a speech meant to give graduates a glimpse of what they can achieve if they work hard in the years that lie before them. Goddard College, a small liberal arts school in Plainfield, Vt., wanted a different kind of speaker. The graduating class chose a cop killer. A video recording was arranged so that Mumia Abu-Jamal could speak to the students from Mahanoy State Correctional

The U.S. economy added 248,000 jobs in September, and the unemployment rate dropped to 5.9 percent. But the labor force participation rate continued to fall, average hourly earnings seem frozen, and over 13 percent of workers are either out of work, involuntarily working part time or too discouraged to keep hunting for jobs, and 20 percent of teenagers are out of work. In short, two cheers for the latest report, but hold the champagne. Sales of new homes rose 18 percent in August from July, but sales of previously owned homes, 90 percent of all sales, fell 1.8 percent, and

In her just-released memoir, 27 year-old "Girls" star Lena Dunham claims that as a 19 year-old Oberlin College student in Ohio, she was raped by a college Republican. In the first chapter that addresses the encounter, Dunham describes the "ill-fated evening of lovemaking" as awkward and hollow. The most sensational moment comes from the fact that "Barry" wasn´t wearing a condom. In the next chapter, Dunham backtracks with the claim that she´s an "unreliable narrator" and accuses "Barry" of rape: [I]n another essay in this book I describe a sexual encounter with a mustachioed campus Republican as the upsetting but

A recently retired Secret Service agent told MailOnline on Thursday that former director Julia Pierson´s resignation will be welcomed by the agency´s rank-and-file because ´people in the service thought she was a joke from Day One.´ He attributed her swift fall from grace to a cadre of ´p***ed off agents who had had enough´ of feeling disrespected by the service´s first female director. ´Putting her in charge was part of the [Obama] administration´s push to feminize the service after the "hookergate" nightmare,´ the agent said, referring to agents who were fired after patronizing prostitutes during a security-check trip to Colombia

Deadly, irrational, and determined, the intruder snuck across a weakened perimeter. Eluding capture, the intruder was detained only after missteps and close calls. The spin began soon after the threat was isolated. Information was selectively leaked. Half-truths and untruths were uttered. Responsibility was avoided; privileges and credentials asserted; authority reasserted. Trust us. Remain calm. Don’t panic. This is the template of recent events. A mental case jumps the White House fence. He makes it to the East Room before he’s tackled by an off-duty Secret Service agent. Initial statements turn out to be misleading or false. What on earth is an ohbee-guynee? Apparently it is a weird Obamaspeak pronunciation of OB/GYN (pronounced oh-bee-gee-why-en). For the president’s benefit, let me specify that means a doctor who delivers babies and takes care of the lady parts. When President Obama announced the departure of Eric Holder from his position as attorney general, he also mentioned his “good friend,” the AG’s wife, Dr. Sharon Malone, and he called her an “ohbee-guynee.” (snip) it almost seems as though someone raised in a fantasized USSR training camp for deep cover agents was inserted into the identity of Barack Obama and loosed upon

It’s the “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes.” A New York appeals court next week will consider whether chimps should have the same rights as human beings. The extraordinary proceeding is the result of a lengthy battle by animal-rights activists who argue that animals with human qualities — including chimps — are entitled to human protections, including freedom from captivity. Steven Wise, part of the Nonhuman Rights Project, which is leading the effort, will have to convince a panel of Albany appellate judges that a chimp name Tommy is a “legal person” to get him moved from a cage

It is the stuff that nightmares are made of, and day by day it is getting worse. The Ebola epidemic, says Dr Margaret Chan, director-general of the World Health Organisation (WHO), is now “the greatest peacetime challenge” since the Second World War. Yet her own organisation’s tardiness, partly caused by cuts, together with reductions in--and misuse of--funds elsewhere, are largely responsible for Ebola spiralling out of control. [Snip] It’s just the beginning. At present the numbers of people infected are thought to be doubling in under 30 days--and the blue-chip US Center for Disease Control and Prevention predicts that, if Ebola

President Obama was at Northwestern University on Thursday to deliver an economic speech that, he and his team hoped, would lay out the case for why the public is better off today than they were six years ago -- even if they didn´t feel it in their everday lives. Instead, Obama just gave every Republican ad-maker in the country more fodder for negative ads linking Democratic candidates to him. Here are the four sentences that will draw all of the attention (they come more than two thirds of the way through the speech): "I am not on the ballot this

In a speech in Boston, First Lady Michelle Obama left behind talk of exercise and school lunches, exchanging it all for bald politics by claiming that under her husband the US economy is now better off "by almost every economic measure." The First Lady appeared at the Strand Theater Friday to stump for Martha Coakley´s campaign for Governor of Massachusetts. Coakley needs help badly, as even in blue, blue Massachusetts, the race between Democrat Coakley and Republican Charlie Baker is essentially a toss up. In her remarks, Obama pushed the President´s newest campaign line that he has saved the economy based on

Meghan McCain joined the dog pile on the Secret Service this week, saying she’s had “nothing but horrible experiences" with the agency and likening the agents to “glorified mall cops.” The 29-year-old author and television personality, who is also the daughter of former GOP presidential candidate Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), opened up on Pivot’s “TakePart Live” about some of her interactions with the Secret Service. WASHINGTON — Representative Elijah E. Cummings of Maryland was at the grocery store the other day when he ran into an elderly black woman who expressed growing concern about President Obama’s safety. Why, she asked, wasn’t he being better protected by his Secret Service agents? The furor that led to this week’s resignation of the director of the Secret Service resonated deeply among blacks, outraged that those supposed to be guarding the first black president were somehow falling down on the job — and suspicious even without evidence that it may be deliberate. “It is something that is widespread in
