President Obama made a surprise video appearance at the opening ceremonies of the 2014 Gay Games in Cleveland on Saturday. Joining Greg Louganis, Lance Bass, the Pointer Sisters, and Broadway’s Andrea McArdle and Alex Newell in celebrating the event, Obama said, “Since 1982 the Gay Games have given lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender athletes and supporters around the world a chance to come together to compete, celebrate, and inspire others.” President Obama, who is vacationing on Martha’s Vineyard, noted how the country has changed since the games began in 1982. “We’ve also seen America change in that time, even since 2006,

We are no longer united as human beings as a group but are being set apart by characteristics that have little to do with our humanity in the large sense.

If you missed Mark Sanford´s tortured, meandering Facebook post about his various relationship and family troubles last weekend, I´m afraid you´re out of luck. The Republican Party´s Lord Byron apparently thought better of it and decided to take the post down. Maybe Sanford´s sons impressed upon him that he had become the single most embarrassing parent in America. Or maybe the South Carolina congressman suddenly realized that he wasn´t actually 15 and was under no compulsion to vent his conflicted emotions on social media. (If I knew how to do it, I´d insert a little "unamused" emoji face here.) Or perhaps Sanford

Baton Rouge, Louisiana -- It´s Sunday morning at the New Life Baptist Church in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, but the man preaching to the choir is no minister. "My God is not finished with me yet," he tells the congregation. The man speaking is Edwin W. Edwards -- ex-four-term Louisiana governor, ex-four-term congressman and ex-con. "I may be old and rancid butter, but I´m on your side of the bread," he proclaims from the altar. Unrepentant and unapologetic, Edwards is in church not looking for forgiveness. The 87-year-old is looking for votes. After almost nine years in prison, the flamboyant showman

At two dozen foreign airports, U.S.-bound passengers are undergoing enhanced security screening. Agents are searching for hidden explosives. Laptops

EDINBURGH, Scotland - Scottish voters have resoundingly rejected independence, deciding to remain part of the United Kingdom after a historic referendum that shook the country to its core. The decision prevented the rupture of a 307-year union with England, bringing a huge sigh of relief to Britain´s political establishment, including Prime Minister David Cameron, who faced calls for his resignation if Scotland had broken away. The vote on Thursday - 55 percent against independence to 45 percent in favor - saw an unprecedented turnout of just under 85 percent. A majority of voters did not embrace Scottish First Minister Alex Salmond´s impassioned plea

If there is one thing that the Administration and Democratic candidates have in their favor going into the mid-term elections, it is that election day is November 4, and Obamacare’s second open enrollment begins on November 15. If the dates were flipped, there is little doubt that voters affected by Obamacare would wreak havoc on the politicians who imposed the Rube Goldberg contraption of exchanges on them. Despite having just tossed another $60 million out the window “to help consumers navigate their health care coverage options in the Health Insurance Marketplace,” the Administration will likely face an even more bemused and

It’s official. Jimmy Carter is no longer the worst president in American history. The crown of shame has been passed from the former peanut farmer to our weak, lead-from-behind community organizer, whose lack of foreign policy experience and gravitas has come into full embarrassing display. And with ISIS on the march — and now threatening to assassinate Pope Francis — President Obama’s abysmal approval ratings have Democrats ducking for cover. A CBS News/New York Times poll released yesterday — which shows approval ratings for Obama’s foreign policy at a record low 34 percent, with a whopping 58 percent disapproving — delivered a

One of the first major scandals of the Obama administration may not get resolved until after Barack Obama leaves office — at least, if Eric Holder has anything to say about it. Politico’s Josh Gerstein reported last night on an effort by the Attorney General to keep the issue of executive privilege and Congressional subpoenas from resolution, even after a federal judge ordered Holder and the Department of Justice to submit documents to the House Oversight Committee. If successful, it might push the appeals process so far out that Obama will leave office before Congress can exercise its oversight responsibilities

(Editor´s note: Three words -- Joseph. Robinette. Biden.) Based on interviews with DNC staffers -- both former and current -- the piece described Wasserman Schultz as something of a modern-day Tracy Flick: over-eager, disloyal and not shy about promoting her ambitions. It would be fair to say that she sounds like, well, a lot like other politicians. And this would be accurate.
