A Peacemaker Who Never Had it Easy
American Spectator, by Ben Stein

Original Article

So, now it’s forty years since Richard Nixon resigned. The Peacemaker. Humiliated. Spat on by people not worthy to empty his bedpan. Disgraced for rumors of rumors of rumors. Even now, forty years on, a genuine genius, a man of character, George Will, an American icon of intelligence, gets roped into repeating the hoary chestnut that Nixon purposely prolonged the war in Vietnam before he was elected in 1968 to deprive Hubert Humphrey of the prize. There’s no story there except that even so brilliant a prize as Will repeats pool hall gossip about Nixon that has been disproved a

Mine too, #1.

Ben Stein´s love and admiration for the president he served always shines through in these pieces. Stein is a staunch defender.

Stein is attempting to rewrite history. Nixon was horribly corrupt, deceitful, mean spirited and deeply disturbed. Nixon surrounded himself with goons who never questioned any Nixon command, no matter how illegal or damaging to our country. Remember Wage & Price Controls and the explosion of inflation and gas lines that followed. The only difference between Nixon and Obama is that Nixon wrapped himself in our flag while Obama uses flag and race as his anti-impeachment card,

Thank you for the truthful article, Ben.
Richard Nixon is the only president I ever campaigned for. He was the only president, in my life, I felt was worthwhile of the office he held.

In June, 2001, Konstantin Petrov, an immigrant from Estonia, got a job as an electrician at Windows on the World, the restaurant atop the north tower of the World Trade Center. He was given a little office without cabinets, and after he built a shelf there, by bolting a steel plate to an exposed steel girder, he sent his friends a photograph of himself lying across it, and boasted that if the shelf ever collapsed the building would go down with it. Petrov worked the night shift. This suited him, not only because he had a day job, as the superintendent

That tearing sound you hear throughout the land is the rending of garments by anguished Democrats. In a day they surely never expected would arrive, President Barack Obama has a worse image than former President George W. Bush in the just-completed WSJ/NBC September poll. Of the three presidents tested, Bill Clinton remains the most popular. He has a 56% positive/21% negative rating. That’s not the key data point here. The last time 42 was below 50% positive was way back in December 2008. The last time Mr. Clinton was negatively perceived was June 2008. No, the big news from these data

Last week, crowdfunding platform GoFundMe pulled a campaign to raise money for an Illinois woman’s abortion. In a message to the woman, identified only as Bailey, GoFundMe said that the fundraiser was not “appropriate” for the site because it contained “subject matter that GoFundMe would rather not be associated with.” In an earlier comment to Salon on its decision to shutdown the campaign, a “customer happiness” representative said that each review is handled on a “case-by-case basis” and, “In this particular case, GoFundMe determined that the fundraising campaign titled ‘Bailey’s Abortion Fund’ would be removed from the site.” But as

President Barack Obama last night promised to defeat ISIS (a.k.a. ISIL or the Islamic State) by combining American air power and 475 additional troops—not boots on the ground—with the ground forces of ephemeral allies, whose willingness and ability to fight are far from certain. Among the allies who are to conduct the ground campaign against ISIS are the Kurds (whose fighting ability is not in question), Iraqi forces that collapsed when confronted with several thousand ISIS fighters, and now the largely unknown “moderate” forces fighting the Assad regime. The president showed his “fighting side” by expanding American air power into

President Obama on Wednesday grudgingly accepted that the rise of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria had left his preferred Middle East policy in shambles and announced a new one centered on building a broad coalition to fight the Islamist extremist group. In doing so, the president finally accepted direct U.S. intervention in Syria. Many of the actions he proposed in Wednesday night´s speech to the nation were those his administration had previously rejected as impractical over the past three years, including U.S. bombing raids and arming Syrian rebels believed to be "moderates." The move comes after a stunning turnaround

Rarely has a president faced a greater challenge in establishing his credibility for a new foreign-policy move than Barack Obama did in his nationally televised speech tonight. A CNN poll earlier this week found that just 30 percent of voters thought Obama had presented a clear plan for fighting the Islamic State. While Obama now pledges to ask Congress to train and aid Syrian rebels who would fight the group, voters remember that he backed similar plans in Syria in 2013, when his advisers saw Syrian president Bashar Assad as the major threat. The new Fox News poll out today has more

Thirteen years ago, mass murder came from the sky as Islamist radicals turned those four airliners into missiles aimed at the heart of America. We remember, we mourn, we rage, our emotions no less raw after another turn of the calendar. Never will there be balm for the slaughter of 2,977 that day and, before them, for the deaths of the six who perished in the first World Trade Center attack of 1993, and, after them, for the mounting toll among the rescue and recovery workers who were sickened by their service. Not having watched much television in the 1970s—my time was much too valuable, you see—I knew little of “Happy Days,” and thus never saw the inspiration for the phrase “jumping the shark”. But the educational magic of the YouTube force is with us, allowing one to catch up with popular culture, even if a few decades late, and I now understand both conceptually and visually the deep meaning of that phrase. And I am thankful that a thoroughly modern visualization of jumping the shark now comes courtesy of the ineffable Secretary of State John Kerry, who has jumped not just

The president had headed to the golf course just minutes after making a statement on the beheading of an American journalist. Pictures later showed him laughing, smiling, joking around with his golf buddies. (Talk about Clintonesque compartmentalizing.) It didn’t take long for Mr. Obama to hit a record low in his approval rating — 38 percent. The president’s spectacular incompetence in fixing the U.S. economy had been on

No sooner does Her Majesty ring off than Blair gets a call from her private secretary, Robin Janvrin. “Try and see it from her perspective,” the baron begs. “She’s been brought up to believe it’s God’s will that she is who

WASHINGTON--US President Barack Obama will tell the American people on Wednesday night that he plans to order strikes against Islamic State forces in both Syria and Iraq until the group is ultimately destroyed. The president´s plan includes additional support for opposition militias in Syria vetted by the United States, which will serve as a ground force complementing America´s air campaign. [Snip] The "comprehensive strategy," as described by one White House official, will involve "US military action and support for the forces combating ISIL [Islamic State] on the ground–both the opposition in Syria and a new, inclusive Iraqi government."

As we suspected, President Obama tried in his Wednesday-night speech to make it sound like he was doing something new when he, in fact, he is not. Moreover, in describing his response, he made plain that he doesn’t take the threat to the homeland seriously. For a threat his advisers say is greater than that posed by al-Qaeda after 2001, he proposed measures suitable for Yemen and Somalia. No, really — that’s the plan. For starters, the president doesn’t believe the Islamic State is a current threat to the U.S.: “So ISIL poses a threat to the people of Iraq
