´On the Edge of the Precipice´
U.S. News and World Report, by John Aloysius Farrell

On the day that sired the flames that came to consume his presidency, Richard Nixon stirred slowly and didn’t sit for breakfast until after 8 a.m. The White House was filled with relatives and friends that Sunday morning. They had gathered for his daughter Tricia’s wedding, which had taken place the previous evening among the blossoms in the misty Rose Garden (and amid anxious consultations with Air Force meteorologists). The affair was “a fairyland” to rival Christmas, an enchanted Rose Mary Woods, Nixon’s longtime secretary, told him. Nixon and his family rifled through the newspaper coverage of the ceremony. The New

I think Farrell is a former Boston Globe liberal "journolist"...and I´m sure that´s the intent #1. Whenever they´re boxed into a corner, they´ll go back to the Stone Age to dig up some GOP crud to throw against the wall...all while shouting "LOOK, A SQUIRREL!". It´s all they´ve got.

Nixon looks like a wuss compared to what is going on now.

The press hated him and GW, but look where they are with Zippy-on their knees.

‘The Roosevelts’: Once you finish all
14 hours, you’re sorry to see them go

Let’s start with the end. When it’s over — when you make it through the marathon that is Ken Burns’s beautiful, seven-part documentary “The Roosevelts: An Intimate History,” which begins Sunday night on PBS — you may find yourself with a lingering, nebulous grief. You’re sorry it’s over. You’re sorry they’re over. You’re sorry a certain expression of American ideals is, or often appears to be, completely over. My study habits haven’t improved since college; like an idiot, I put off watching all 14 hours of “The Roosevelts” until I absolutely had to watch them on a deadline binge this week.

ISIS can ´muster´ between 20,000

Washington -- A CIA assessment puts the number of ISIS fighters at possibly more than three times the previous estimates. The terror group that calls itself the Islamic State "can muster between 20,000 and 31,500 fighters across Iraq and Syria," a CIA spokesman told CNN on Thursday. Analysts and U.S. officials initially estimated there were as many as 10,000 fighters, including those who were freed from prisons by ISIS, and Sunni loyalists who have joined the fight as the group advanced across Iraq. "This new total reflects an increase in members because of stronger recruitment since June following battlefield successes and the declaration

Watch your back, Baghdadi. As part of his expanded campaign against the Islamic State, President Obama has authorized the U.S. military to target Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, the driving force behind the violent extremist group, it was reported Thursday. Until now, restrictions imposed by the President prevented the military from going after the group’s leaders. But the limits were lifted as part of Obama’s new offensive against the group, also known as ISIS, the Washington Post reported. A Pentagon spokesman on Thursday acknowledged a shift in strategy but declined to comment whether Baghdadi was

Oscar Pistorius murder trial:

Olympic sprinter Oscar Pistorius was found guilty of culpable homicide Friday, the finale of an emotional 6 ½-month trial in the shooting death of his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp. The conviction comes just a day after Judge Thokozile Masipa pronounced the double amputee track star not guilty of murder. Masipa also found the double amputee track star guilty of one of three firearms charges. He was convicted of firing a gun in a restaurant — an incident not related to the Steenkamp shooting — but not of possession of ammunition or a separate count that he fired out of the sunroof of a

Why Obama’s assault on ISIS probably

Could President Obama’s military move against ISIS derail the Republican freight train that appeared to be barreling toward victory in the midterm elections? It’s possible, but not very likely. Until Wednesday night’s speech, the president was taking a political beating on foreign policy that had a toxic effect on his approval ratings. And that was a major drag on vulnerable Democrats, especially those red-state senators trying to hang on and keep the chamber from tipping to the GOP. But now, whether or not Obama is leading from behind, as his critics say, he has committed to using U.S. military power against the terrorists.

Throughout his presidency, President Obama has emphasized one point while talking about Islamist extremists: They are not practicing Islam, he has said, they are perverting it. He took that a step further Wednesday night. While announcing that he´s expanding the campaign against the Islamic State extremist group into Syria, Obama said flatly that this group, which is trying to install a caliphate in the Middle East, "is not Islamic." He didn´t say they are perverting their religion; he said they´re not even part of that religion. "No religion condones the killing of innocents, and the vast majority of [the Islamic State´s] victims

CHICAGO – The future of the Wisconsin’s governor’s race could hang on a federal appeals court in Chicago hearing a potentially explosive case today. Depending on how the three-judge panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit decides, the ruling will have major impact on the scope of political speech, the role of voter’s donations in politics, and the fate of Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, a 2016 Republican presidential hopeful. The governor’s race is virtually tied, according to recent polls, and the court’s ruling may move undecided voters. The investigation, critics say, has paralyzed conservative advocacy in Wisconsin, giving

Five things that could go horribly

If there´s one thing America´s misadventure in Iraq from 2003 to 2011 taught everyone, it is that things can go terribly wrong when the U.S. intervenes in a foreign environment with deep sectarian divisions, an ineffectual government, armed factions, and the general complexities of the Middle East. So now, Barack Obama plans to step up U.S. involvement in Iraq with more airstrikes and an effort to strengthen and better organize Iraqi and Kurdish military forces, as well as some Syrian rebels. In his address to the nation Wednesday night, the president laid out a multi-point proposal for action. He also had

Left-wing filmmaker Michael Moore savaged President Obama in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, calling him “a huge disappointment” and claiming he’ll be remembered only as the nation’s first black president and nothing else. Moore sat down for a video interview at the Toronto Film Festival on Tuesday to discuss the 25th anniversary of Roger and Me, Moore’s documentary about Detroit’s General Motors that launched his career. When the interviewer asked whether Moore agreed with President Obama’s 2012 assertion that he’d “saved Detroit” by bailing out General Motors and Chrysler, the filmmaker recoiled. “Detroit, at this point, would stand a better chance

The rising threat from Islamic extremists has set the stage for Republicans to make a splash with the launch of their Benghazi investigation next week. The media glare had largely fallen away from the probe into the terror attack on U.S. facilities in Benghazi, Libya, that left Ambassador Christopher Stevens and three other Americans dead. But with the second anniversary of the attack looming on Thursday, and a new book by U.S. security contractors claiming a CIA station chief ordered them to “stand down” during the assault, the start of the investigation into Benghazi is poised to become a major event. “ISIS

Often in U.S. history, the president stands virtually alone at the precipice of war. He gathers Congress for an address to an uncertain nation and declares, "Here is why we must fight." This is not one of those times. In a few hours, President Obama will stand before a public that, without his leadership, largely determined that the Islamic State must be stopped. What they want to hear from their commander-in-chief is, "I´m ready to fight." With that dynamic in mind, here are five things to watch for tonight: Does the president recognize the Islamic State as a serious threat? Obama compared

President Obama in his ISIS speech did his best to convince the American people that things are under control, that he will pursue a coalition with other nations to degrade and ultimately destroy ISIS and that he will do it only through air strikes. Or are there other, hidden reasons why Obama does not want to destroy ISIS? Reluctance and refusal to go to war,

Hillary Clinton has revealed that she worked through her husband’s affair whilst he was President by making him go through an agonising ´truth and reconciliation´ process. The former US Secretary of State said that she forced Bill Clinton into South Africa-style hearings where he had to be completely honest before she forgave him. She said she was inspired by the country´s former leader Nelson Mandela and that she had to act otherwise she would remain in a mental ´prison´ for the rest of her life. Mrs Clinton, 66, has rarely spoken about her husband’s infidelity with White House intern Monica

Qua speech, Barack Obama’s address Wednesday on the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria was surprisingly terrible: a disorganized mess, insincere and unconvincing. To appreciate just how bad and bizarre it was, compare the president’s speech announcing a new air campaign in Iraq and Syria to Dwight Eisenhower’s 1958 statement on his decision to intervene in Lebanon with 14,000—14,000!—troops. The statement contains no chest-thumping about America’s leadership in science and medicine. No pivot to the auto industry and medical research. Eisenhower simply explained what had been done, and why.

Even someone as savvy about everything as Michelle Obama sometimes flubs an outfit — or to put it more politely, wears something that doesn’t enhance her natural attractions. Which is not to say that’s all that matters about the first lady, who’s been busy with a variety of public events this week: registering voters in Georgia, cutting the ribbon on the renovated White House Visitors Center, commemorating the 9/11 terrorist attacks, even appearing in a videotaped shout-out to Prince Harry. Take a look at what she wore for all that. A little too full for her figure? (Photographs).. A flattering

This week, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) slandered a group of Middle Eastern Christians who were trying to raise awareness of their struggle to avoid a genocide in the Middle East. His cynical grandstanding was rightly condemned — but he was hardly alone. Cruz agreed to speak to this group, which included bishops of the Catholic and Orthodox Churches, ostensibly out of solidarity, but took the occasion to antagonize them over their insufficient praise for Israel, then smeared them as anti-Semites before dropping the mic. The Washington Free Beacon publicized this flameout — their publisher said the room

SAN DIEGO — African-American elementary students in California were chronically truant at nearly four times the rate of all students during the last school year, according to a state report released Friday. The report by the California Attorney General´s office is the first time the data has been broken down according to race and income levels. Officials say such data is needed to address the problem. Poverty and suspensions are contributing factors. Overall, more than 250,000 elementary school students missed 10 percent or more of the 2013-2014 school year or roughly 18 or more school days. Check your hygiene privilege. Cabbies who smell badly are probably just oppressed folks who came directly from their terrorist training camp to the airport and didn’t have time to change. Body odour is among 52 criteria that officials at San Diego International Airport use to judge taxi drivers. Cabbies say that smacks of prejudice and discrimination. It does discriminate between cabbies who smell like an open sewer and those who don’t. It further prejudges what a good smell is.
