Watch live: Gaza-Israel
ceasefire ends

Israel says it has resumed strikes on Gaza in response to rocket fire, after end of 3-day truce. [Snip] On Thursday, Hamas held its first public rally since a cease-fire with Israel, with an official vowing the militant group would never give up its arms and will continue to fight until the Gaza Strip blockade is lifted. The uncompromising rhetoric of the official, Mushir al-Masri, came as Hamas and other Palestinian factions were in Cairo indirectly negotiating with Israel for a permanent ceasefire and steps to lift the seven-year-old blockade of the coastal strip by Israel and Egypt.

Comments:
Live stream comes via the Telegraph. Notice says live stream unavailable but it´s up and running at the moment and has just shown good-sized air strikes on Gaza targets.

As usual, if your browser fails to work, try another one. If that fails, you might try Google News, searching on the header, and get in from there. Firefox seems to work, others have suggested Chrome. Please save link; Lcom software won´t permit a repeat headline.

Ack! Stream has just changed to what looks like the Pistorius trial. Just keep checking, Gaza stream will return at some point.

Senior government officials stated to Arutz Sheva Friday that Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Moshe Ya´alon had authorized the IDF to retaliate with force to a barrage of over 18 rockets on Israeli civilians Friday morning. [Snip] IDF Spokesman Lt. Col. Peter Lerner confirmed both reports close to 11:00 am Friday. “The renewed rocket attacks by terrorists at Israel are unacceptable, intolerable and shortsighted," Lerner added. "Hamas’ bad decision to breach the ceasefire will be pursued by the IDF, we will continue to strike Hamas, its infrastructure, its operatives and restore security for the State of Israel.”

President Obama, who ran for office on a platform of ending U.S. military hostilities in Iraq, said Thursday night that he had authorized ´targeted airstrikes if necessary´ in an effort to protect the delivery of humanitarian aid to threatened Iraqis, and to ensure the safety of US personnel delivering the assistance. ´We do whatever is necessary to protect our people. We support our allies when they´re in danger,´ Obama said in an 8-minute speech delivered from the White House´s State Dining Room But American combat troops will not be returning to fight in Iraq, he insisted, and the U.S. won´t

Rockets fired from the Gaza Strip crashed into Israel Friday, the army said, less than four hours from the scheduled expiry of a three-day truce. "Just now, two rockets fired from Gaza hit southern Israel. No injuries reported," the army said in a text message to journalists ahead of the 0500 GMT deadline for the truce to be renewed or collapse. "Terrorists have violated the cease-fire," it added on its official Twitter site. Israel has said it is ready to "indefinitely" extend the 72-hour lull but there has so far been no announcement from Hamas, whose representatives and those of

Barack Obama has authorised military airstrikes over northern Iraq in order to “prevent genocide” being carried out by Islamist extremists against Christians and other minorities. The US President said late on Thursday night he would approve targeted strikes on fighters from the Islamic State should they advance towards the city of Erbil, to protect US diplomatic and military staff stationed there. "Earlier this week, one Iraqi in the area cried to the world, there is no one coming to help. Well, today America is coming to help," Mr Obama said. Innocent families face the prospect of "genocide," he said. The

More than half of 15 to 18 year olds in Gaza show signs of full or partial post-traumatic stress disorder after seeing dead bodies and witnessing heavy shelling, according to a new study. The study by a team of British and Palestinian academics demonstrates the long-lasting and harmful effects that exposure to war has on the psychological wellbeing of teenagers in the coastal enclave. The study, entitled ‘Trauma, PTSD, Anxiety and Coping Strategies among Palestinians Adolescents Exposed to War in Gaza’, examined the effects that the 2008-2009 ‘Cast Lead’ war between Gaza and Israel had on teenagers´ well-being.

President Obama gave a press conference this evening. He started a little over an hour late without explanation. Reporters stuck to asking questions that they evidently knew Obama would be comfortable answering. None of them asked him about any of his administration scandals. ABC’s Jon Karl, usually a tough questioner of Obama and his spokesmen, asked a rambling question that played right into the Democrats’ “economic patriotism” canard. Despite the fact that the president showed a passionless, bloodless, disinterested face to the world, he still managed to do some damage. Chris Jansing of CNN asked Obama if the sanctions against Russia are working.

First Lady Michelle Obama shared some thoughts about women versus men during a conversation with former First Lady Laura Bush at the U.S Africa Leaders Summit in Washington D.C. Obama explained that as First Lady it was important to remember to use the position to highlight their personal interests. “We can’t waste this spotlight, it is temporary and life is short and change is needed and women are smarter than men. And the men can’t complain because you’re outnumbered today,” she said as the audience laughed. Obama cited Laura Bush as a First Lady that acted with a level of

Former Ambassador to the United Nations John Bolton warned of the perilous new age our world has sunken into under President Obama’s leadership. He referenced a new WSJ/NBC poll that found Americans are panicking over the uncertain, dismal state of our country. The poll found that only 36 percent of Americans surveyed approve of President Obama’s foreign policy. The former Ambassador warned that if America cowers from a position of power, “you are going to have

The disgraceful video above shows how racist Russian students projected a laser image of Barack Obama eating a banana on to the US Embassy in Moscow. On 4th August, the so-called show began with a message to the US President pretending to wish him a happy 53rd birthday. A likeness of Obama with a party hat on his head then appeared, although the mouth area was made to look like that of a monkey - and a banana repeatedly moved into the mouth. The series of projections are then repeated several times. A group calling itself The Moscow Student Initiative

The GOP has shown time and again that it is incapable of passing any meaningful immigration reform. But give them tens of thousands of Central American children fleeing violence, and they fly into action. Turns out, what animates today´s Republicans is deporting kids. So inspired were they, the GOP-controlled House of Representatives stayed late Friday to distort and demagogue a humanitarian crisis, passing a reprehensible bill that the Republicans claim addresses the border crisis. Dozens of government watchdogs are sounding the alarm that the Obama administration is stonewalling them, in what is being described as an unprecedented challenge to the agencies they´re supposed to oversee. Forty-seven of the government´s 73 independent watchdogs known as inspectors general voiced their complaints in a letter to congressional leaders this week. They accused several major agencies -- the Justice Department, the Peace Corps and the chemical safety board -- of imposing "serious limitations on access to records." The inspectors general are now appealing to Congress to help them do their jobs uncovering waste, fraud, and mismanagement.

Concern about rising wealth and income inequality has generated all kinds of solutions, often focused on improving the lot of the people at the bottom with measures such as minimum wages. But instead of putting a floor on what people get, why not put a ceiling on how much they get to keep?(Snip)Suppose that people, after paying ordinary income taxes, would be allowed to keep up to, say, $500,000 of their income, then would be obliged to give away the rest to the charities of their choice or, if they like, to a charity of their own design and creation.
