Militant gains in Iraq bring
urgent U.S. policy reconsideration

The increasingly dire straits of refugees in the Kurdish region of Iraq, amid startling gains by Islamist forces there, led President Obama to approve humanitarian airdrops and have propelled the administration into new and urgent consideration of a military intervention it has studiously avoided so far. The lightning advance of the Islamic State militant group, south from the northwest city of Mosul to within 60 miles of Baghdad, has been a source of deep concern since it began two months ago. But the administration worried that interjecting itself into the conflict would inevitably open it to charges of siding with

President Obama announced Thursday night he has authorized the U.S. military to conduct air strikes "if necessary" against Islamist militants in Iraq, and the military has conducted a mission to drop humanitarian aid there to help religious minorities stranded amid the violence. Obama said in a statement from the White House the U.S. military is authorized to launch targeted air strikes if Islamist militants advance toward American personnel in northern Iraq. He also said that the U.S. decided to conduct the drops to the 50,000 or so religious minorities stranded on a mountaintop in the country´s north, who have been

Several months ago, based on several far from minor out-of-the-gate mistakes, I characterized the candidacy of the Democratic Party´s challenger to incumbent Republican Governor John Kasich as "the wreck that is Edward FitzGerald." In the past week, FitzGerald has utterly imploded. The latest revelation Tuesday afternoon, namely that he had "no license to drive at all from 2002 to 2008," leaves one wondering whether his party vetted him at all. Former Cleveland Plain Dealer editorial director Brent Larkin calls this "at or near the top of the list" of "bizarre developments" he´s seen in 45 years of covering politics. Despite

A smiling Governor Rick Perry of Texas announced that Space Exploration and Technologies Corporation (SpaceX) will build the world´s first private commercial rocket launch facility on an isolated beach near Brownsville, Texas. Texas appear to have “bought the deal” by offering an $100 million economic incentive package. However, many Southern Californians are appalled that after multi-billionaire SpaceX Chairman Elon Musk suckered the state Legislature into a wildly advantageous crony capital tax exemption for SpaceX, Musk would take his next slurp of crony capitalist cash from Texas. Perry announced that Texas offered SpaceX an incentive package of $15 million in cash

CHICAGO — Any party that allows its opponents to help pick its candidates in “open” primaries is a PPINO — a “political party in name only” — say many Republican officials at their annual summer meeting. Republican National Committee members and activists are still seething about reports that longtime Sen. Thad Cochran, Mississippi Republican, enlisted Democrats to help him win his tough primary contest this summer against state Sen. Chris McDaniel, who was backed by the tea party. They would seem to have an ally in the GOP boss, but the sentiments of the entire party and the prospects for

A NEW humanitarian and security crisis has erupted in northern Iraq, where the al-Qaeda-derived Islamic State borders territories controlled by Iraqi and Syrian Kurds. Since last weekend, tens of thousands of civilians have been trapped on a mountainside near the Iraqi town of Sinjar, which was captured by Islamic State fighters. The refugees, including an estimated 25,000 children, lack supplies of food and water and could perish in a matter of days unless a relief corridor is opened, according to the United Nations. Meanwhile, the extremist forces are threatening to capture Iraq’s two largest dams and are pressing toward Irbil,

CINCINNATI — If the issue of same-sex marriage is on an expressway to the Supreme Court, Wednesday was rush hour in a federal appeals court here. In an unprecedented and marathon hearing, tag teams of attorneys for four states told an appellate panel why voter-approved prohibitions in Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio and Tennessee should be honored. All the while, plaintiffs and their families filled row after row of a huge, ornate courtroom, arms around one another, occasionally shushing babies and listening for their names to be mentioned. It became clear after three hours of arguments that the panel could become the

Shirley is a contributor to NR whose book takes a favorable view of Ronald Reagan’s abortive 1976 primary challenge; Perlstein is a leftist who specializes in explaining the self-deluded psychodrama of conservatives — and the unique danger it poses — for liberal readers. You can guess which book has been praised in the Times of New York for being “both enjoyable as kaleidoscopic popular history of

BAGHDAD — Stranded on a barren mountaintop, thousands of minority Iraqis are faced with a bleak choice: descend and risk slaughter at the hands of the encircled Sunni extremists or sit tight and risk dying of thirst. Humanitarian agencies said Tuesday that between 10,000 and 40,000 civilians remain trapped on Mount Sinjar since being driven out of surrounding villages and the town of Sinjar two days earlier. But the mountain that had looked like a refuge is becoming a graveyard for their children. Unable to dig deep into the rocky mountainside, displaced families said they have buried young and elderly

After initial success in cutting federal spending and reducing deficits, House Republicans have drifted into the red with a series of tax measures and spending bills that are not offset — either adding to the pile of debt or hiding the costs with accounting gimmicks. More than a dozen bills with costs that are not fully offset elsewhere in the budget have passed the Republican-controlled House and threaten to add nearly $1 trillion to federal debt over the next decade. The measures include a slew of tax breaks known as tax extenders. Among them are a $155 billion research and

In response to the death of a U.S. major general in Afghanistan today, Charles Krauthammer notes that it was Obama who escalated U.S. involvement there. “The irony is when Obama came into office, there was a plausible way for us to get out,” he said on Tuesday’s Special Report, without a heavy involvement. Krauthammer noted that out of every four American causalities in Afghanistan, three occurred under Obama, and that the Bush administration had kept involvement there “at a low boil.” “[Obama]’s the one who escalated,” Krauthammer said. “He’s the one who said we have to make a stake here.

President Obama gave a press conference this evening. He started a little over an hour late without explanation. Reporters stuck to asking questions that they evidently knew Obama would be comfortable answering. None of them asked him about any of his administration scandals. ABC’s Jon Karl, usually a tough questioner of Obama and his spokesmen, asked a rambling question that played right into the Democrats’ “economic patriotism” canard. Despite the fact that the president showed a passionless, bloodless, disinterested face to the world, he still managed to do some damage. Chris Jansing of CNN asked Obama if the sanctions against Russia are working.

Sen. Pat Roberts fended off an aggressive challenger Tuesday in the Kansas Republican primary, dealing another blow to a national tea party movement that has targeted longtime Washington incumbents. Milton Wolf, 43, a Leawood radiologist making his first run for public office, failed to pull the upset in the race against Roberts, 78, whose political dates to the late 1960s, when he was a congressional aide. After surviving the primary, Roberts is a huge favorite to win his fourth, six-year term in November. Republicans enjoy a nearly 20 percentage-point advantage among registered voters and have won every U.S. Senate race

Former Ambassador to the United Nations John Bolton warned of the perilous new age our world has sunken into under President Obama’s leadership. He referenced a new WSJ/NBC poll that found Americans are panicking over the uncertain, dismal state of our country. The poll found that only 36 percent of Americans surveyed approve of President Obama’s foreign policy. The former Ambassador warned that if America cowers from a position of power, “you are going to have

The disgraceful video above shows how racist Russian students projected a laser image of Barack Obama eating a banana on to the US Embassy in Moscow. On 4th August, the so-called show began with a message to the US President pretending to wish him a happy 53rd birthday. A likeness of Obama with a party hat on his head then appeared, although the mouth area was made to look like that of a monkey - and a banana repeatedly moved into the mouth. The GOP has shown time and again that it is incapable of passing any meaningful immigration reform. But give them tens of thousands of Central American children fleeing violence, and they fly into action. Turns out, what animates today´s Republicans is deporting kids. So inspired were they, the GOP-controlled House of Representatives stayed late Friday to distort and demagogue a humanitarian crisis, passing a reprehensible bill that the Republicans claim addresses the border crisis. Dozens of government watchdogs are sounding the alarm that the Obama administration is stonewalling them, in what is being described as an unprecedented challenge to the agencies they´re supposed to oversee. Forty-seven of the government´s 73 independent watchdogs known as inspectors general voiced their complaints in a letter to congressional leaders this week. They accused several major agencies -- the Justice Department, the Peace Corps and the chemical safety board -- of imposing "serious limitations on access to records." The inspectors general are now appealing to Congress to help them do their jobs uncovering waste, fraud, and mismanagement.

The Africa summit is officially underway, which means one very important thing for the District: The first lady of Cameroon’s hair is here. Chantal Biya has single-handedly made mullet the new magnificent. Biya’s bouffant is a beauty school master’s thesis in contradictions. Somehow her hair manages to be short and long, rebellious yet elegant, unruly but controlled. And whether she’s visiting the pope or hanging out with Paris Hilton, the 43-year-old’s signature style remains unfazed. Here we humbly submit just a small sampling of the many coifs of Chantal. Washingtonians should expect to see each and every one around town this week.
