Who are the Yazidis and
why is Isis hunting them?

Guardian [UK], by Raya Jalabi

Original Article

Posted By:Lalo, 8/7/2014 7:10:37 PM

Reports that Islamic militants have trapped up to 40,000 members of Iraq’s minority communities have spurred the US into considering a military-led humanitarian action. Most of the trapped people are members of the Yazidi religion, one of Iraq’s oldest minorities. They were forced to flee to Mount Sinjar in the Iraqi north-west region, or face slaughter by an encircling group of Islamic State (Isis) jihadists. The UN has said that roughly 40,000 people – many women and children – have taken refuge in nine locations on the mountain, “a craggy, mile-high ridge identified in local legend as the final resting place of Noah’s ark”.

Comments:
Check the video showing a female Yazidi MP´s hysterical though powerful appeal to the Iraqi parliament for help. We should already have supplied humanitarian assistance in our own interests as well as theirs - which might include air dropping a little something on the surrounding ISILists as well.

Almost completely off-topic: The Yazidis are the descendants of the Zoroastrians. The theme music from the movie 2001 is actually a German classical piece called Also Sprach Zaratustra [in English: Thus Spake Zoroaster] The religion actually is in many ways similar to Christianity.

#1 - there´s a fairly good article on Zoroastrian history at the Catholic Encyclopedia online at New Advent dot org. The entry is under Avesta ... their holy books. It says, in part:

Under the kings of the Achaemenian line the religion founded by Zoroaster became one of the great religions of the ancient East. But it shared the fate of the Persian monarchy, it was shattered, though not overthrown, by the conquest of Alexander and fell consequently into neglect under the Seleucid and Parthian dynasties. With the accession of the Sassanian dynasty it met with a great revival.

They are certainly a mixed bag as far as similarities to other religions. In addition to the above, they have resemblances to just about every religion including Sufism, Gnosticism, Judaism and ancient nature worship. There is also the non-Abrahamic belief in transmigration of the soul.

This is interesting, from Wiki: In her memoir of her service with an intelligence unit of the U.S. Army´s 101st Airborne Division in Iraq during 2003 and 2004, Kayla Williams (2005) records being stationed in northern Iraq in an area inhabited by "Yezidis". The Yezidis were Kurdish-speaking, but did not consider themselves Kurds, and expressed a fondness for America and Israel.... In an October 2006 article in The New Republic, Lawrence F. Kaplan echoes Williams´s sentiments about the enthusiasm of the Yazidis for the American occupation of Iraq, in part because the Americans protect them from oppression by militant Muslims and the nearby Kurds. Kaplan notes that the peace and calm of Sinjar is virtually unique in Iraq: "Parents and children line the streets when U.S. patrols pass by, while Yazidi clerics pray for the welfare of U.S. forces."

There being no Melek Taus in Zoroastrianism, we can rule that out. The Peacock Angel even predates the arrival of peacocks to the region, the great bustard being used back to Shanidar cave time. This religious use is symbolic, and Yezidis no more worship birds than Christians worship lambs. "Melek" is cognate with Melchizedek and Moloch and Malik, while "Taus" means "sign" - Sign of the King, Lord of the Sign, Symbol of Righteousness or something like that.

Ebola panic more

Here we go again, and this time the panic is on steroids. The Ebola sickness is a horrific disease, and the virus that causes it is lethal and fast-moving. But the way much of the media, which is also lethal and fast-moving, covers the outbreak is even more horrific, spreading misinformation, fear and panic faster than a speeding bullet. You might think we’ll all be dead by Thursday next. Ebola joins AIDS, SARS, MERS and avian flu that were supposed to have accomplished wipeout by now. Ebola is a dark word, redolent of sorcery and reeking of mystery,

Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) on CBS’ “Face the Nation,” proposed Sunday that the U.S. cut off aid to countries whose unaccompanied illegal minors enter the U.S. if those countries “don’t keep them and take care of them.” “About a third of the little girls are raped in the process of getting here. It´s a humanitarian problem, but it´s apart from immigration reform. This is a specific problem created by an impression that if you get to America, you can stay. It is one of the world´s most famous ancient sites. And tonight it seemed Barack Obama could not resist a chance to see Stonehenge for himself - ordering his helicopter to make an unscheduled stop on his return home from the Nato summit. After flying out of Newport in south Wales, Marine One made an unannounced landing at Boscombe Down Airbase in Wiltshire. The President´s motorcade then weaved its way for 20 minutes across Salisbury Plain, to the amazement of passing drivers. Under grey skies, the President then embarked on tour of the prehistoric stone circle and henge with Heather Sebire, the curator

Barack Obama stands apart from other modern American Presidents in many ways. (snip)the widespread view that he is the coolest President ever. This supernal coolness is not new. In his autobiography, Dreams From My Father, the President wrote that in his teenage years “I tried my best to be cool at all times” (p. 82). However, leaving aside the contradiction inherent in trying to be cool, it is possible that Barack Obama’s teenage experiences may have left him psychologically, and perhaps even neurologically, incapable of performing fundamental tasks of his current position. Much of the appeal of coolness is its

The top Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee on Friday said new allegations that U.S. commandos were ordered to “stand down” during the 2012 attack in Benghazi, Libya, aren’t supported by findings from House and Senate investigators. Five commandos who survived the Benghazi attack, which claimed the lives of Ambassador Christopher Stevens and three other Americans, made the allegation in a new book, accusing the CIA station chief of delaying a rescue mission. Rep. Dutch Ruppersberger (D-Md.) said lawmakers never came across evidence indicating the station chief had told his team to “stand down” and abort a

The Internal Revenue Service has lost emails from five more employees who are part of congressional probes into the treatment of conservative groups that applied for tax-exempt status, the tax service disclosed Friday. The tax agency said in June that it could not locate an untold number of emails to and from Lois Lerner, who headed the IRS division that processes applications for tax-exempt status. The revelation set off a new round of investigations and congressional hearings. On Friday, the IRS issued a report to Congress saying the agency also lost emails from five other employees related to the probe,

Last Wednesday, at a ceremony to appoint Texas lawyer Shaarik Zafar to be special representative to Muslim communities, Secretary of State John Kerry said it was the United States’ Biblical “responsibility” to “confront climate change,” including to protect “vulnerable Muslim majority counties.” Kerry said Scripture, in particular the Book of Genesis, makes clear it is our “duty” to protect the planet and we should look at Muslim countries “with a sense of stewardship of earth,” adding, “That responsibility comes from God.” And here you thought all along that “Uncle Joe” was the resident crazy in the Obama administration.

Vice President Joe Biden gives President Obama´s weekly remarks: Ladies and gentlemen, this is Joe Biden, I’m filling in for President Obama, while he addresses the NATO summit in Wales. When the President and I took office in January of 2009, this nation was in the midst of the greatest economic crisis since the great depression. Our economy had plummeted at a rate of 8% in a single quarter — part of the fastest economic decline any time in the last half century. Millions of families were falling underwater on their homes and threatened with foreclosure. The iconic American automobile industry was under siege.
