Europe´s comet-chasing spaceship:
Five amazing facts

Europe´s Rosetta probe made its historic arrival at Comet 67P/Churyumov–Gerasimenko yesterday (Aug. 6), making Rosetta the first human-built craft ever to rendezvous with a comet with the intention to enter orbit. Now flying about 62 miles (100 kilometers) from the comet, the Rosetta spacecraft is expected to gather data that will help scientists learn more about comets. Specifically, the findings will shed light on how the ancient, icy wanderers that roam through the solar system formed thousands of years ago. The European Space Agency-operated spacecraft may also help scientists find answers to some of the most pressing

Comments:
Until NASA (and private industry) get back in the game of spaceflight, our technological genius and legacy will eventually lag behind those countries that do. What ESA has accomplished is beyond remarkable, to those who had hoped that we might have begun traveling beyond after landing on the Moon. I can remember when Carter´s misery index was fueled by turning many of our brain trust into gas station attendants when jobs were cut back as the dRATS always increased social engineering in an attempt to equalize pay. This envy, which is driving the current illegal alien invasion, is reprehensible.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is spending more than $450,000 on gym memberships for TSA agents and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) employees who work desk jobs at a procurement office in Washington, D.C. Last month, DHS bought gym memberships for ICE workers in its Office of Acquisition to boost their morale and “improve working conditions.” “As part of the agency-wide Health and Wellness program, sponsored by Department of Homeland Security/Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), has a requirement to provide ICE employees in Tech World Office at 801 I Street,

Russia grants Edward Snowden

Moscow - Russia has granted fugitive National Security Agency leaker Edward Snowden permission to remain in the country for three more years, Snowden´s lawyer said Thursday, a measure that promised to further strain U.S.-Russian relations. The decision gives the former NSA contractor the option to remain in Russia through August 2017 and, potentially, to take up Russian citizenship should he extend his stay for one year beyond that, lawyer Anatoly Kucherena told reporters Thursday. The decision last year to grant asylum to Snowden was a major factor in the souring of U.S.-Russian relations, which have deteriorated to Cold War

A new report from the Congressional Budget Office finds that the number of those who don’t have to pay fines to opt out of Obamacare — the exempted class — is going to hit 25 million by 2016. The Wall Street Journal said now, only 4 million are going to pay the opt-out fine — down from 6 million. (Snip) That fine is going to rise to $685 per adult, or 2.5 percent of family income, by 2016, capping out per household at $2,085. Some were exempted from these fines, including illegal immigrants. But the White House has been steadily adding exemptions since Obamacare’s passage, and now even those who profess hardships like domestic violence

In yet another sign of the gravity of Chicago´s violent crime problem, 40 Illinois State Police officers will soon hit the streets in beleaguered neighborhoods. The officers represent an expansion of a partnership between Chicago Police and the Illinois State Police. "Earlier this year I told (Chicago) Mayor (Rahm) Emanuel we would help in any way we could to combat violence in the city. When he requested assistance, I immediately agreed to help," Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn said in a press release announcing the move. The 40 officers will join the Chicago Police Department's Fugitive Unit and help search for wanted criminals.

Kirkuk - Jihadists seized Iraq´s largest Christian town and surrounding areas Aug. 7, sending tens of thousands of panicked residents fleeing in what is being called a humanitarian disaster, officials and witnesses said. The onslaught saw the Sunni extremist Islamic State (IS) extend its writ over northern Iraq and move within striking distance of autonomous Kurdistan, in one of the most dramatic developments of the two month-old conflict. IS militants moved into Qaraqosh and other towns overnight after the withdrawal of Kurdish peshmerga troops, who are stretched thin across several fronts, residents said.

After 10 years and a journey of four billion miles, the European Space Agency’s Rosetta spacecraft arrived at its destination on Wednesday for the first extended, close examination of a comet. A six-minute thruster firing at 5 a.m. Eastern time, the last in a series of 10 over the past few months, slowed Rosetta to the pace of a person walking, about two miles per hour relative to the speed of its target, Comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko. “It is like driving a car or a bus on a motorway for 10 years,” said Andrea Accomazzo, the flight director, at a post-rendezvous news conference. “Now we’ve entered downtown.

After declaring the surge of Central American migrants crossing the border a humanitarian crisis, the Obama administration has shifted sharply to a strategy of deterrence, moving families to isolated facilities and placing them on a fast track for deportation to send a blunt message back home that those caught entering illegally will not be permitted to stay. In a far corner of the New Mexico desert, in the town of Artesia, more than 600 women and children are being held in an emergency detention center that opened in late June. On Friday, officials began filling up a new center in Karnes City, Tex., for up to 532 adults and children,

President Obama gave a press conference this evening. He started a little over an hour late without explanation. Reporters stuck to asking questions that they evidently knew Obama would be comfortable answering. None of them asked him about any of his administration scandals. ABC’s Jon Karl, usually a tough questioner of Obama and his spokesmen, asked a rambling question that played right into the Democrats’ “economic patriotism” canard. Despite the fact that the president showed a passionless, bloodless, disinterested face to the world, he still managed to do some damage. Chris Jansing of CNN asked Obama if the sanctions against Russia are working.

It doesn´t get much more cool and easy breezy than FLOTUS in a topknot. Seriously, if you looked up "summertime" in the dictionary, you´d see this picture of Michelle Obama in a bright yellow sundress and a chic updo. The first fady looked positively radiant in a gorgeous neon yellow chiffon dress by Prabal Gurung during the United States-Africa summit dinner Tuesday night. Obama is a known fan of the Nepalese designer, and we adore this vibrant and effortless look on her. She also often favors bright, bold colors—and this shade of electric lemon yellow? Perfection. Sen. Pat Roberts fended off an aggressive challenger Tuesday in the Kansas Republican primary, dealing another blow to a national tea party movement that has targeted longtime Washington incumbents. Milton Wolf, 43, a Leawood radiologist making his first run for public office, failed to pull the upset in the race against Roberts, 78, whose political dates to the late 1960s, when he was a congressional aide. After surviving the primary, Roberts is a huge favorite to win his fourth, six-year term in November. Republicans enjoy a nearly 20 percentage-point advantage among registered voters and have won every U.S. Senate race

First Lady Michelle Obama shared some thoughts about women versus men during a conversation with former First Lady Laura Bush at the U.S Africa Leaders Summit in Washington D.C. Obama explained that as First Lady it was important to remember to use the position to highlight their personal interests. “We can’t waste this spotlight, it is temporary and life is short and change is needed and women are smarter than men. And the men can’t complain because you’re outnumbered today,” she said as the audience laughed. Obama cited Laura Bush as a First Lady that acted with a level of

The poll found that only 36 percent of Americans surveyed approve of President Obama’s foreign policy. The disgraceful video above shows how racist Russian students projected a laser image of Barack Obama eating a banana on to the US Embassy in Moscow. On 4th August, the so-called show began with a message to the US President pretending to wish him a happy 53rd birthday. A likeness of Obama with a party hat on his head then appeared, although the mouth area was made to look like that of a monkey - and a banana repeatedly moved into the mouth. The series of projections are then repeated several times. A group calling itself The Moscow Student Initiative

But give them tens of thousands of Central American children fleeing violence, and they fly into action. Turns out, what animates today´s Republicans is deporting kids. So inspired were they, the GOP-controlled House of Representatives stayed late Friday to distort and demagogue a humanitarian crisis, passing a reprehensible bill that the Republicans claim addresses the border crisis. Former president Jimmy Carter called on the West to recognize the U.S.-designated terrorist group Hamas as a legitimate "political actor" that represents the bulk of the Palestinian population. Carter made the comments in an article he co-wrote with former Irish president Mary Robinson in a new issue of Foreign Policy magazine. It was published as a cease-fire took hold Tuesday after four weeks of fighting between Israel and Hamas, which governs Gaza. In a sharply worded rebuke to Israel, Carter and Robinson said, "There is no humane or legal justification for the way the Israeli Defense Forces are conducting this war."
