A Spanish missionary priest who tested positive for the Ebola virus was in stable condition at a Madrid hospital on Thursday after being evacuated from Liberia, health officials said. The priest, Miguel Pajares, 75, was helping to treat people infected with Ebola and was one of three who tested positive at the San Jose de Monrovia Hospital in Liberia earlier this week. He was flown to Spain on Thursday. Juliana Bohi, an Equatorial Guinean nun with Spanish nationality who worked with him in Liberia, was also brought back but she is not infected. Both worked for the San Juan de Dios hospital

This is not spreading through liquids. How can doctors and providers covered head to toe be exposed to fluids? Something does not add up.

Medical care and disease transmission barriers are not the same in third world countries as they are in the first world. Remember that even in Africa this strain of the disease has a 40% survival rate - probably it is much higher with a good level of care. I suspect the Western survivors will get to be blood donors in the future search for vaccines.

Columbia River Cannabis in Douglas County was finally close to getting a marijuana-producer license after nine months. That is, until a 15,000-acre wildfire encroached on its farm July 10 and burned its 5-week-old medical-marijuana plants that were eventually to be used to start growing in the recreational market. The farm planned to make its first shipments to retailers by September. “We got singed real bad,” said Harold Jarboe, Columbia River Cannabis’ marketing director. Throughout Central Washington this month, marijuana producers have struggled to keep their budding businesses afloat. Amid record-setting wildfires they worked to grow and water crops, or deliver products at a

Click, click, click. Click, click. Click, click. Click, click, click. That´s Humoody Jauda Smith using sound to see. At 11, he´s taking strides toward self-reliance with a different kind of sight. He was blinded at 2 when insurgents shot him in the face in Iraq. His family sent him from Baghdad to Snohomish with hope that American doctors could restore his vision. After discovering that wasn´t possible, his host parents, Randy and Julie Robinett Smith, fought to keep him here. Now, they´re giving him the chance to learn to live independently. And he´s surpassing expectations using new techniques and technologies.

It is one of the world´s most famous ancient sites. And tonight it seemed Barack Obama could not resist a chance to see Stonehenge for himself - ordering his helicopter to make an unscheduled stop on his return home from the Nato summit. After flying out of Newport in south Wales, Marine One made an unannounced landing at Boscombe Down Airbase in Wiltshire. The President´s motorcade then weaved its way for 20 minutes across Salisbury Plain, to the amazement of passing drivers. Under grey skies, the President then embarked on tour of the prehistoric stone circle and henge with Heather Sebire, the curator

Barack Obama stands apart from other modern American Presidents in many ways. (snip)the widespread view that he is the coolest President ever. This supernal coolness is not new. In his autobiography, Dreams From My Father, the President wrote that in his teenage years “I tried my best to be cool at all times” (p. 82). However, leaving aside the contradiction inherent in trying to be cool, it is possible that Barack Obama’s teenage experiences may have left him psychologically, and perhaps even neurologically, incapable of performing fundamental tasks of his current position. Much of the appeal of coolness is its

The top Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee on Friday said new allegations that U.S. commandos were ordered to “stand down” during the 2012 attack in Benghazi, Libya, aren’t supported by findings from House and Senate investigators. Five commandos who survived the Benghazi attack, which claimed the lives of Ambassador Christopher Stevens and three other Americans, made the allegation in a new book, accusing the CIA station chief of delaying a rescue mission. Rep. Dutch Ruppersberger (D-Md.) said lawmakers never came across evidence indicating the station chief had told his team to “stand down” and abort a

The Internal Revenue Service has lost emails from five more employees who are part of congressional probes into the treatment of conservative groups that applied for tax-exempt status, the tax service disclosed Friday. The tax agency said in June that it could not locate an untold number of emails to and from Lois Lerner, who headed the IRS division that processes applications for tax-exempt status. The revelation set off a new round of investigations and congressional hearings. On Friday, the IRS issued a report to Congress saying the agency also lost emails from five other employees related to the probe,

Last Wednesday, at a ceremony to appoint Texas lawyer Shaarik Zafar to be special representative to Muslim communities, Secretary of State John Kerry said it was the United States’ Biblical “responsibility” to “confront climate change,” including to protect “vulnerable Muslim majority counties.” Kerry said Scripture, in particular the Book of Genesis, makes clear it is our “duty” to protect the planet and we should look at Muslim countries “with a sense of stewardship of earth,” adding, “That responsibility comes from God.” And here you thought all along that “Uncle Joe” was the resident crazy in the Obama administration.

As he mulls a presidential run in 2016, former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush´s friends and associates are urging top Republican fundraisers and strategists to avoid throwing their lot in with another candidate until Bush makes a decision. "Before you do anything, let us know," was how one GOP insider described the message from Bush´s team to the Wall Street Journal. Bush´s associates aren´t actively contacting potential supporters, the Journal reports, but they are answering inquiries from fundraisers and strategists

LAS VEGAS — Former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said Thursday the U.S. should become what she called the world’s 21st-century clean energy superpower, during remarks resembling both a campaign speech and a call to action at the annual National Clean Energy Summit in Las Vegas. Clinton cast the threat of global climate change as real, and “the most consequential, urgent, sweeping collection of challenges” faced by the nation and the world. “The data is unforgiving,” the former New York senator and first lady said to a standing room crowd of more than 800 people at a Las Vegas

Sen. Bernie Sanders, a self-described socialist, called for a progressive estate tax on multi-millionaires and billionaires during a speech on Saturday. “A nation will not survive morally or economically when so few have so much while so many have so little,” Mr. Sanders said at the Vermont AFL-CIO annual convention. “We need a tax system which asks the billionaire class to pay its fair share of taxes and which reduces the obscene degree of wealth inequality in America,” said Mr. Sanders, an independent who caucuses with the Democrats. According to Mr. Sanders, taxing the top .25 percent of wealthiest Americans is the fairest

There is reportedly better than a 50-50 chance that former Florida Governor Jeb Bush will run for president. According to a report in the Wall Street Journal, Bush´s inner circle of "advisers have been quietly spreading the word that they should avoid committing to other possible presidential candidates until he decides on his own course after the November election" and have been actively dismissing "speculation that the former Florida governor has ruled out a 2016 run." Jim Nicholson, "a Bush supporter who served in President George W. Bush´s cabinet," told the outlet: "I think the chances are better than 50-50

Vice President Joe Biden gives President Obama´s weekly remarks: Ladies and gentlemen, this is Joe Biden, I’m filling in for President Obama, while he addresses the NATO summit in Wales. When the President and I took office in January of 2009, this nation was in the midst of the greatest economic crisis since the great depression. Our economy had plummeted at a rate of 8% in a single quarter — part of the fastest economic decline any time in the last half century. Millions of families were falling underwater on their homes and threatened with foreclosure. The iconic American automobile industry was under siege.

Never mind what American news reports say: President Obama is "totally committed" to dealing with ISIL -- and his strategy is "becoming more clear by the day," Secretary of State John Kerry told U.S. allies at the NATO summit in Wales on Friday. "Contrary to what you sort of heard in the politics of our country, the President is totally committed; there is a strategy that is clear, becoming more clear by the day," Kerry said. "And it really relies on a holistic approach to ISIL. That is to say that we need to do kinetic, we need to attack
