In yet another uninspiring performance by our unengaged and unengaging president, this time a press conference at the end of a three-day U.S.-Africa Leaders Summit in Washington, D.C., Barack Obama discussed, among other things, the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas which, according to The One, “we” have achieved. Five years after Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl was mysteriously taken captive by members of the Taliban while serving in Afghanistan, the Army’s expected to get some answers on how it happened. The 28-year-old was read his Miranda rights during his first interview with Army investigator Maj. Gen. Kenneth Dahl while at Fort Sam Houston in Texas, his attorney said Wednesday. "He waved his right to remain silent and answered every question that was put to him," Attorney Eugene Fidell told the Daily News while calling the interview an "intelligent effort to get to the facts." In the lead-up to the 2012 midterm elections, all the talk was about the GOP taking control of the Senate. Then, as often happens with the Grand Old Party, they figured out a way to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. Todd Akin happened. Then Richard Mourdock did. One-two punch. Flat on the mat 8, 9, 10. Done. Mr. Akin kicked things off in August by saying two words that have never been uttered side by side in the history of the English language: “legitimate rape.” No need to explain, Todd. Stick a fork in it, you’re done. Mr. Mourdock was cruising

Whether the current cease-fire holds or collapses, the facts are thus far incontrovertible: Hamas has lost a war it started, and Israel has won a war it didn’t want. Obi-Wan Kenobi may have told Darth Vader, “If you strike me down, I shall become more powerful than you can possibly imagine,” but this is not “Star Wars.” This is the real world, circa 2014 — and in the real world, winners win when they win and losers lose when they lose. The Force doesn’t exist, and if it did, top Hamas terrorist Khaled Mashaal wouldn’t have it — not even the Dark

LONDON — Not long after stepping down as prime minister in 2007, Tony Blair had drinks at a hotel overlooking the River Thames with Paul Kagame, Rwanda’s president. Mr. Blair was planning a charity that would embed Western experts in finance and government in African state ministries, and he said he wanted to begin in Rwanda. “Tony Blair was pitching himself as a former leader who knew the challenges of government, and he was saying that he could help,” said David Himbara, an economist who at the time was a close aide to Mr. Kagame. In the years since, Mr. Blair has

In a lust for Latino votes and voters — and, oh yes, great compassion for the children of Central America, etc. — Obama seems poised to act unilaterally on immigration, granting a massive amnesty to illegal aliens while doing little or nothing about border security. In two words, this stinks. It stinks not because of the children, good or bad, justifiable or not, invading our border, or the nice or not so nice people currently here, or even the drug cartels, murderous as they are. Those are problems — in many cases bad problems. But they can be handled in a

Don’t believe AP’s ho-hum tone: latest
poll is great news for Republicans

A glance at the Associated Press’s write up of the latest AP-GfK poll, conducted July 24 – 28, leads the reader to believe there really isn’t that much to see there. Sure, the American public is incredibly dispirited, mistrustful of their elected leaders, and generally dissatisfied with the direction of the country; but you already knew that. One-third of respondents don’t even care who is in charge – they don’t believe it matters. Neither party “is trusted much to manage the federal government,” the AP write up reads. While there are some indications that the coming midterms are set to benefit Republicans,

Will the US Help the Kurds Fight Isis?

The latest string of victories by Islamic militants in Iraq raises an enormous and obvious question: What’s the U.S. doing to help the Kurds? This week, fighters from Islamic State in Iraq and al-Sham, or ISIS, captured the town of Sinjar and, the next day, Mosul Dam, the biggest dam on the Tigris River. These victories offer two terrifying prospects, one for humanitarian reasons, the other for strategic reasons. Sinjar is home to several thousand members of the Yazidi sect, a religious minority with roots in Islam and Zoroastrianism. Islamist extremists, including those who make up the vanguard of ISIS, regard Yazidis

The GOP-led House Select Committee on the Benghazi terror attack shows no sign of backing down despite a report from another congressional panel that, according to a top Democrat, found no intelligence failures around the deadly 2012 assault. "There is more work to be done and more to be investigated," a spokeswoman for House Select Committee Chairman Trey Gowdy told CNN on Wednesday. Shortly before beginning its August recess, the House Intelligence Committee, also led by Republicans, approved its report on the militant attack on the U.S. diplomatic compound in eastern Libya that killed Ambassador Christopher Stevens and three other Americans. t is the softly spoken radio show that provides good-natured help and advice to thousands of gardeners every week. So regular listeners to Gardeners’ Question Time may be horrified to discover it has been accused of peddling racial stereotypes. According to an academic, the sedate Radio 4 panel show is riddled with "racial meanings" disguised as horticultural advice. One current presenter, Bob Flowerdew, rubbished the idea, calling it “ridiculous”, and asked whether experts on the show “should stop using Latin names to avoid offending the Romans”. But Dr Ben Pitcher, a senior lecturer in sociology at the University of Westminster,

Ladies and gentlemen, I suspect you’ll understand that my kind words for former Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell rank among my biggest professional regrets. This is for several reasons, but preeminently, it appears the governor and his wife turned themselves into walking infomercials for the dietary supplements produced by one of the governor’s top donors. And they may very well have behaved in a manner you and I would consider… not quite sane: A day earlier, a onetime aide testified that after then-governor McDonnell endorsed Mitt Romney for president in 2012, McDonnell’s wife sought out the candidate at a news media

This isn’t new news. The ‘Rev’ has owed the IRS huge sums of money for years. Here’s a story from — cough – NBC News’ website in 2008 detailing the $1.5 million owed by Sharpton personally and his “business entities” at the time. At the end of 2011 (by which point Sharpton had been hired as a host on NBC’s cable “news” network) Sharpton’s unpaid tab had swelled to nearly $3 million. Three more years have since elapsed, so it’s time for an update (via the New York Post): The Rev. Al Sharpton, along with his nonprofit National Action Network

It doesn´t get much more cool and easy breezy than FLOTUS in a topknot. Seriously, if you looked up "summertime" in the dictionary, you´d see this picture of Michelle Obama in a bright yellow sundress and a chic updo. The first fady looked positively radiant in a gorgeous neon yellow chiffon dress by Prabal Gurung during the United States-Africa summit dinner Tuesday night. Obama is a known fan of the Nepalese designer, and we adore this vibrant and effortless look on her. She also often favors bright, bold colors—and this shade of electric lemon yellow? Perfection. ATLANTA — In the early 2000s, a young researcher at the Centers for Disease Control named Greg Millett set out to solve an epidemiological mystery. Nobody could explain why black Americans, particularly black gay men, had such high rates of HIV infection compared to the rest of the population. How were they putting themselves in so much danger? What were they doing differently from everyone else? Millett began with a survey of the published research, but that only seemed to raise more questions. Study after study seemed to arrive at the same conclusion: Black gay men take fewer risks in the

Sen. Pat Roberts fended off an aggressive challenger Tuesday in the Kansas Republican primary, dealing another blow to a national tea party movement that has targeted longtime Washington incumbents. Milton Wolf, 43, a Leawood radiologist making his first run for public office, failed to pull the upset in the race against Roberts, 78, whose political dates to the late 1960s, when he was a congressional aide. After surviving the primary, Roberts is a huge favorite to win his fourth, six-year term in November. Republicans enjoy a nearly 20 percentage-point advantage among registered voters and have won every U.S. Senate race

Once upon a time an American family’s home was their castle and the bigger the better, but growing concerns about meeting mortgage payments and the environmental impact of large houses has helped fuel a new movement of people who are happy to live small. The Tiny House Movement is a growing group of people who are happy to downsize the space that they live in and enjoy simplified lives as a result. While the average American home is around 2600 square feet, the typical small or tiny house is around 100-400 square feet. Scroll down for video -Large homes come

Obamacare plans have shrunk payments to physicians so much that some doctors say they won’t be able to afford to accept Obamacare coverage, NPR reports. Many of the eight million sign-ups in Obamacare exchanges nationwide already face more limited choices for physicians and hospitals than those in the private insurance market. But with low physician reimbursement rates, the problem could get even worse. For a typical quick patient visit, Dr. Doug Gerard, a Connecticut internist, told NPR a private insurer would pay $100 while Medicare would pay around $80. But Obamacare plans are more likely to pay closer to $80, which Gerard

First Lady Michelle Obama shared some thoughts about women versus men during a conversation with former First Lady Laura Bush at the U.S Africa Leaders Summit in Washington D.C. Obama explained that as First Lady it was important to remember to use the position to highlight their personal interests. “We can’t waste this spotlight, it is temporary and life is short and change is needed and women are smarter than men. And the men can’t complain because you’re outnumbered today,” she said as the audience laughed. Obama cited Laura Bush as a First Lady that acted with a level of

In the poll, which was conducted July 30-August 3, a majority believed that allowing illegal immigrants "to stay will be a signal that will encourage thousands more to try and come here, placing an even greater burden on limited public services such
