GUATEMALA CITY – Guatemalan authorities on Wednesday captured six men and one woman suspected of smuggling migrants to the United States, a prosecutor said Wednesday. The arrests were made during law enforcement operations in the western province of Quetzaltenango, Alex Colop told reporters. With assistance from the U.S. Embassy in Guatemala, security forces captured seven people who were linked with the smuggling of unaccompanied minors to the United States, the prosecutor said. The network had pocketed $3 million for taking people illegally to the United States, according to Guatemala’s interior minister, Mauricio Lopez Bonilla.

I wonder just how much that "Get Out Of Jail Card" will cost. I´m sure an accommodation will be reached.

Russian strategic nuclear bombers carried out air defense zone incursions near Alaska and across Northern Europe this week in the latest nuclear saber rattling by Moscow. Six Russian aircraft, including two Bear H nuclear bombers, two MiG-31 fighter jets and two IL-78 refueling tankers were intercepted by F-22 fighters on Wednesday west and north of Alaska in air defense identification zones, said Navy Capt. Jeff A. Davis, a spokesman for the U.S. Northern Command and North American Aerospace Defense Command. Two other Bears were intercepted by Canadian jets on Thursday. “The group of Russian aircraft flew a loop south, returning westward toward

Russia has said the conduct of the Scottish referendum "did not meet international standards", with its observers complaining the count took place in rooms that were too big and that the procedure was badly flawed. In an apparent attempt to mirror persistent western criticism of Russia´s own elections, Igor Borisov – an accredited observer – said the poll failed to meet basic international norms. Borisov and three other Russians arrived in Edinburgh on Wednesday evening, the state news agency Ria Novosti reported. The team from Moscow´s Public Institute of Suffrage watched voting take place in the Scottish capital and the surrounding area.

TUCSON, Arizona – While the U.S. government acknowledges that there is still a lot to do about the crisis of Central American children entering the country, experts and activists believe that sooner rather than later a new wave of unaccompanied youngsters will arrive at the border with Mexico. “The situation in Central America hasn’t changed, we have the same problems of insecurity and violence, the lack of governability continues and jobs are still a problem – there is no work for young people who are members of cartels or street gangs,” the director of the Americas Program of the Center for

Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro on Thursday said media outlets CNN en español, NTN24, and the Miami Herald have launched an international campaign claiming "the state of Aragua had been hit by a virus that had killed thousands of Venezuelans in recent hours at Maracay (Central) Hospital, and that it was unknown whether Ebola was the virus involved." Maduro claimed the reports intended to cause "panic or psychological terror." Further, he said he had instructed the solicitor general to prepare international "legal actions" against the media outlets involved.

Gov. Jerry Brown has handed California cities some sought-after tools for controlling a massage industry boom. Cities and police officers have complained about a proliferation of massage parlors in recent years, saying the culprit was a 2008 law giving the nonprofit California Massage Therapy Council overriding authority for overseeing massage parlors. The issue was a priority for the League of California Cities. Brown announced on Thursday that he had signed Assembly Bill 1147, which restores some power to local jurisdictions – notably granting them land-use powers making it easier to shut down or restrict the number of massage establishments.

Politics: Amid applause, President Obama has made fighting Ebola in Africa a military priority, to protect U.S. health. So why is he doing nothing about the raft of new diseases that may be rolling in from our unguarded border? ´We can´t dawdle on this one," the president intoned this week, announcing that he would be putting 3,000 boots on the ground in Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea, in a $600 million rescue effort for three nations badly hit by the dreaded Ebola epidemic. "We have to move with force and make sure that we are catching this as best we can, given

The Venezuelan government certainly has an original way to muddy the waters. In the wake of recent statements by leaders of the College of Physicians of Aragua state, who reported the deaths of eight people caused by a “strange” disease, the governor of that state (Tareck El Aissami) replied – with his usual fascist-style tone – with an accusation against one of the complainants for belonging to the Acción Democrática opposition party, which is not a pathology but a constitutional right, and then threatened all those daring to spread the word on the outbreak with sending them to trial and

The informal rate of the US dollar hit a new historic peek on Wednesday in Argentina, breaking the 15 pesos barrier and closing at 15.10 pesos, pushed by rate speculation, and following yesterday’s sharp 25-cents climb. Economy minister Axel Kicillof blamed the ´holdouts´ and the US embassy for the latest surge. The stock exchange rate, that was the main reason for the “blue” dollar skyrocketing on Tuesday, fell back today to 13.63 pesos. Meanwhile, the blue-chip swap rate was up seven cents and closed at 13.49 pesos. Meanwhile, the US dollar climbed one cent to 8.43 pesos in Buenos Aires City

The hundreds of children who recently arrived in New York City from Central America have encountered a justice system that appears more forgiving than many faced by their counterparts elsewhere. Many young immigrants remain unaware of the available support or are afraid to seek it out. In response, the city announced on Tuesday that it would help bring

Royce, who met this week with the foreign minister of Kurdistan, cited recent reports of young female Kurdish troops “laughing” at ISIS forces they had turned back. “These ISIL soldiers apparently believed that if

Devastating. That´s really the only way to describe Politico´s piece on DNC Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz. (I hereby nominate her for Worst Week in Washington.) (Editor´s note: Three words -- Joseph. Robinette. Biden.) Based on interviews with DNC staffers -- both former and current -- the piece described Wasserman Schultz as something of a modern-day Tracy Flick: over-eager, disloyal and not shy about promoting her ambitions. It would be fair to say that she sounds like, well, a lot like other politicians. And this would be accurate. But the wholesale bashing of Wasserman Schultz at every level of the party -- White House,

That rare respiratory illness sickening children around the country continues to crop up in new places. It has been confirmed in 22 states, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Friday, appearing in three states where it had not been previously: Georgia, Michigan and Washington state. These children are facing an uncommon enterovirus strain. While enteroviruses in general are quite common, this particular strain — enterovirus 68 — has not cropped up terribly often since it was first identified in 1962. It can cause severe breathing problems, a particular danger for children who may suffer from asthma or other

The U.S Senate passed a bill Thursday evening that will give President Barack Obama the authority to arm moderate Syrian rebels, which is a key part of his plan to fight the jihadist group Islamic State (also known as ISIS and ISIL). Shortly after the Senate passed the bill, which was passed by the House on Wednesday, Obama spoke from the White House. "I´m pleased that Congress, a majority of Democrats and a majority of Republicans in both the House and Senate, have now voted to support a key element of our strategy," Obama said. Washington - The Secret Service is coming under intense scrutiny after a man who hopped the White House fence made it all the way through the front door before being apprehended. President Barack Obama and his daughters had just departed the White House on Friday evening when an intruder scaled the north fence, darted across the lawn and into the presidential residence, where agents nabbed him. The security breach triggered a rare evacuation of much of the White House, with Secret Service officers drawing their guns as they rushed staffers and journalists out a side door.

The French did for President Obama on Friday what they refused to do for his predecessor — they joined the fight in Iraq. Two Rafale fighter planes armed with laser-guided bombs “entirely destroyed” an Islamic State munitions depot and killed dozens of ISIS fighters, making France the first coalition country to make good on its promise to battle the murderous militants. “Other operations will follow in the coming days with the same goal — to weaken this terrorist organization and come to the aid of the Iraqi authorities,” French President Francois Hollande vowed.
