Tiger Woods begins fading
into the distance

Tampa Bay Times, by Gary Shelton

Original Article

No one wants to see the book on greatness close. And so you find yourself wanting to believe. You want to believe Tiger Woods will wake up, at 38, and his back will be fine once more. You want to believe his knees will be healed. You want to believe he can regain the same mental edge he once had. You want to believe he can master his driver, not to mention his putter. (Snip)It wasn´t until Wednesday afternoon when Woods confirmed he would play Thursday in the PGA Championship. He played half of a practice round Wednesday, then putted

Comments:
Played half of a practice round today, then putted the back nine. Publicly declared he is now ready to win the PGA this weekend.

Tiger was great for 10 years. Nicklaus was great for 20. Tiger won 14 majors and finished second four times. Jack won 18 majors, and came in second 19 times. Now tell me, who was the best?

I´m a big Jack fan, and do not want to see his record broken (it won´t be, at least not by Tiger), but to be honest, you have to compare the quality of consistent competition they faced. With Jack, it was a fading Arnie, Lee, Tom (Weiskopf and Watson), Miller for a while, Player and a few others on a week-to-week basis. It´s a lot different now, especially internationally.

Never count on the accuracy of a golf writer about the future. They do not have crystal balls. Tiger Woods knows how to win and still can. Every single great golfer went through the slumps and upsets. I would love to see Tiger come back. But, it is all up to him. If he still has what it takes, he can do it.

There are fewer and fewer people who want to see Tiger on their tv sets every weekend. Every time little Tiger starts to lose big, he gets a twinge and withdraws. His ego can no longer accept that he is washed up. However, he must be ecstatic because every shot by every other player is compared to Tiger at some time in his career. I often wonder if the commentators get paid by the number of times Tiger´s name is mentioned.

Tiger has never had a problem when he is leading or on the leader board.
It´s always when he is playing terrible.
He can´t stand to be so far behind, so he "gets injured"

Tiger is not a winner. A whiner maybe. He is a grown man who should have learned from his past mistakes. Instead he makes excuses. Fade already. Why is it taking so long. When he comes out with the phrase "It´s Bush´s fault", then we know rock bottom has been reached.

It´s quite simple.

What has happened in his private life, with the loss of his wife and, for all intents and purposes his children, has wrecked him psychologically.

Add in a failing body, and it is obvious that Tiger´s glory days are over.

More than a slump. No one has any idea how much he tormented his body with hormones and steroids during his major body-building years when he decided he wanted to be more than a skinny black kid (who could play golf).

The downside of some of that stuff - including steroids to kill pain - is deterioration of bone and other tissue. Some of that is cumulative and irreversible.

Someday we may find out that that was what started his body down the road to the mess we see now. And no amount of positive thinking, wishful thinking, can change that.

One thing sports writers know is what hormones and steroids can do to an athlete who is driven to perfection and performance, and disregards medical reality. Requires no crystal ball.

BEIJING: China’s industrial production growth slowed sharply to its lowest level for more than five years at 6.9% in August, intensifying concerns for the world’s second-largest economy. The key indicator measuring output at factories, workshops and mines, slumped from a 9% year-on-year expansion in July and was the worst since 5.7% in December 2008, during the global financial crisis. Retail sales, an indicator of consumer spending, rose 11.9% in the same month year-on-year, also down from 12.2% in July. Fixed asset investment, a measure of government spending on infrastructure, expanded 16.5% on-year in the first eight months of 2014. It was below the 17%

Representative Mark Sanford of South Carolina surprised the political world on Friday with his announcement that he was ending his engagement to the woman with whom he had an extramarital affair, the revelation of which stunted his rising-star career five years ago. But in interviews last spring, Mr. Sanford and his fiancée, Maria Belen Chapur, indicated that a relationship born in a stew of infidelity, 21st century politics and Twitter-enhanced cable-news sensationalism had, perhaps inevitably, sustained damage. Over the intervening months the relationship collapsed as the two argued over a wedding date, Ms. Chapur said in an interview on Saturday. Ms. Chapur

Here is a guide to the judge´s reasoning: Premeditated murder The state argued that Mr Pistorius had had an argument with Ms Steenkamp, after which he deliberately shot her dead. The judge ruled this had not been proved, as there was only circumstantial evidence of an argument - uncorroborated witnesses´ statements. Qua speech, Barack Obama’s address Wednesday on the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria was surprisingly terrible: a disorganized mess, insincere and unconvincing. To appreciate just how bad and bizarre it was, compare the president’s speech announcing a new air campaign in Iraq and Syria to Dwight Eisenhower’s 1958 statement on his decision to intervene in Lebanon with 14,000—14,000!—troops. The statement contains no chest-thumping about America’s leadership in science and medicine. No pivot to the auto industry and medical research. Eisenhower simply explained what had been done, and why.

Check your hygiene privilege. Cabbies who smell badly are probably just oppressed folks who came directly from their terrorist training camp to the airport and didn’t have time to change. Body odour is among 52 criteria that officials at San Diego International Airport use to judge taxi drivers. Cabbies say that smacks of prejudice and discrimination. It does discriminate between cabbies who smell like an open sewer and those who don’t. It further prejudges what a good smell is.
