RIYADH - A Saudi Arabian man suspected of having contracted the Ebola virus during a recent business trip to Sierra Leone died early on Wednesday in Jeddah, the Health Ministry said. Saudi authorities and international laboratories certified by the World Health Organization are testing samples from the man for Ebola and other diseases after he showed symptoms of viral hemorrhagic fever, the ministry said in a statement. The ministry said it was working to trace the man´s route of travel and identify people he was in contact with. Ebola is one of the deadliest diseases known in humans with a

As many suspected, people traveling through West Africa are spreading the virus elsewhere.

You might have read about how the Islamic State has been using Twitter and other social media platforms to gain power, attention and recruits. Now, though, a suspected Jerusalem-based affiliate of the jihadist group has announced that Twitter employees would be better off dead. The Twitter account with the handle @Dawlamoon, which has since been suspended, called on "lone wolf" terrorists in the United States and Europe to kill Twitter employees. "#The_Concept_of_Lone_Wolf_Attacks The time has arrived to respond to Twitter´s management by directly attacking their employees and physically assassinating them!! WASHINGTON — Homeland Security officials warned Wednesday they don’t have a full picture of the Americans and Europeans heading to Syria to train with ISIS and therefore can’t stop them from coming into the US. “We don’t have a fulsome picture in all cases,” said Jennifer Lasley, a deputy undersecretary at the Department of Homeland Security. “It does concern us,” added Troy Miller, an acting assistant commissioner with US Customs and Border Protection. House Homeland Security Committee chairman Rep. Michael McCaul (R-Texas) called the situation worrisome. “You don’t know what you don’t know. We only have estimates of how many

Cases of Ebola in West Africa are continuing to rise exponentially, with Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone together experiencing a 49% increase in cases in just the last three weeks. New data released Tuesday by the World Health Organization (WHO) shows that there are now a total of 4,269 cases in the three countries, including 2,288 deaths. Liberia alone has experienced a 68% increase in cases in the last three weeks. Localized clusters of Ebola have also been emerging in Nigeria and Senegal, where authorities have reported a combined total of 24 cases and eight deaths. On Monday, the WHO

If we’ve learned anything about fighting terrorism in the 13 years since the Sept. 11 attacks, it’s this: Keep the hubris and the expectations in check. (Snip) The goal under President George W. Bush was to bring democracy to the Middle East. Obama wants only to beat back a threat, a far more modest and realistic goal. “The United States has a well-established tendency to overreact and to shoot itself in the foot,” Harvard Professor Stephen M. Walt wrote in a New York Times op-ed last week. “The Bush administration panicked after 9/11 and overthrew Saddam Hussein, at a cost

Free money for everyone! With weak job growth, rising poverty, and the rich continuing to devour nearly all economic growth, it´s an idea that is gaining more credence. Arguments for a universal basic income (UBI) — in which everyone without exception would receive an equal stipend — have flourished in policy-centric areas of the internet, including The Week. Advocates of UBI see it as a blunter, more effective means of reducing poverty and shrinking the inequality gap. But even if UBI proponents are right on the merits, Tyler Cowen argues that the politics of the issue are not favorable. Under

Washington — President Obama’s speech Wednesday on the growing threat from Islamic State militants in Iraq and Syria represents a major test of his leadership. It’s being billed as an address to the nation, but it will reach far beyond that. Mr. Obama will be speaking foremost to the American people –Democrats, Republicans, and independents – in the heat of the midterm campaign. And it comes at a time of heightened sensitivity to terrorism, the eve of the 13th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, and the second anniversary of the attack on the US mission in Benghazi, Libya. Washington -- Americans are increasingly concerned that ISIS represents a direct terror threat, fearful that ISIS agents are living in the United States, according to a new CNN/ORC International poll. Most now support military action against the terrorist group. Seven in 10 Americans believe ISIS has the resources to launch an attack against the United States, just days before President Barack Obama plans to address the nation on the subject. The poll released Monday shows that Americans favor: -- Additional airstrikes against ISIS (76% favor, 23% oppose)-- Military aid to forces fighting ISIS (62% favor, 37% oppose) -- Providing humanitarian

WASHINGTON--US President Barack Obama will tell the American people on Wednesday night that he plans to order strikes against Islamic State forces in both Syria and Iraq until the group is ultimately destroyed. The president´s plan includes additional support for opposition militias in Syria vetted by the United States, which will serve as a ground force complementing America´s air campaign. [Snip] The "comprehensive strategy," as described by one White House official, will involve "US military action and support for the forces combating ISIL [Islamic State] on the ground–both the opposition in Syria and a new, inclusive Iraqi government."

As we suspected, President Obama tried in his Wednesday-night speech to make it sound like he was doing something new when he, in fact, he is not. Moreover, in describing his response, he made plain that he doesn’t take the threat to the homeland seriously. For a threat his advisers say is greater than that posed by al-Qaeda after 2001, he proposed measures suitable for Yemen and Somalia. No, really — that’s the plan. For starters, the president doesn’t believe the Islamic State is a current threat to the U.S.: “So ISIL poses a threat to the people of Iraq

Rarely has a president faced a greater challenge in establishing his credibility for a new foreign-policy move than Barack Obama did in his nationally televised speech tonight. A CNN poll earlier this week found that just 30 percent of voters thought Obama had presented a clear plan for fighting the Islamic State. While Obama now pledges to ask Congress to train and aid Syrian rebels who would fight the group, voters remember that he backed similar plans in Syria in 2013, when his advisers saw Syrian president Bashar Assad as the major threat. President Obama just announced that he is bringing a counter-terrorism strategy to an insurgency fight. He was at pains to repeat the phrase “counter-terror” four times in a short speech. Noting that ISIL is not a state (partly because the international community thankfully does not recognize it), he declared, “ISIL is a terrorist organization, pure and simple. And it has no vision other than the slaughter of all who stand in its way.” Neither of those sentences, unfortunately, is true. ISIL is an insurgent group that controls enormous territory in Iraq and Syria that it governs. It maneuvers conventional light

Throughout his presidency, President Obama has emphasized one point while talking about Islamist extremists: They are not practicing Islam, he has said, they are perverting it. He took that a step further Wednesday night. While announcing that he´s expanding the campaign against the Islamic State extremist group into Syria, Obama said flatly that this group, which is trying to install a caliphate in the Middle East, "is not Islamic." He didn´t say they are perverting their religion; he said they´re not even part of that religion. Nearly six years into a presidency devoted to ending U.S. wars in the Muslim world, President Obama faced the nation Wednesday night to explain why he has decided to engage in a new one. Obama did not describe his authorization of direct military action to defeat the Islamic State terror group as a conventional war. To the contrary, in a prime-time address from the White House, he sharply contrasted his use of targeted but limited American force with the large-scale air-and-ground invasions launched by his predecessor, George W.
