Montana Democratic Sen. John Walsh’s campaign canceled a string of events this week starting with a fundraiser Tuesday evening in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, fueling speculation that the senator, plagued by allegations of academic plagiarism, would quit the U.S. Senate race. Bozeman’s “Women for Walsh” event that Walsh was scheduled to attend Wednesday was postponed last minute, organizer Linda Phillips wrote on the event’s Facebook page. A discussion of public lands with local activists scheduled for Aug. 8 at Walsh’s new campaign office in Bozeman was also dropped from the schedule, said Billy McWilliams of the Gallatin Democrats. Who Assassinated a U.S. General?
Daily Beast, by Eli Lake    Original Article

Threats from the Taliban and its allies were already on the rise in Afghanistan. And that was before someone dressed like an Afghan soldier killed Maj. Gen. Harold Greene. No one knows for sure who was responsible for the slaying outside of Kabul of Maj Gen. Harold Greene—the first American general killed in a war zone since Vietnam. But U.S. intelligence agencies have recently detected a spike in threats from the Taliban and other associated jihadist organizations in Afghanistan, particularly against Kabul. And one American congressman has already laid the assassination at the feet of the Taliban. The Afghan Defense Ministry said

Memo to Republicans: Start

The November elections could be watershed. The Republicans have a very good chance of taking the Senate, which would be a complete rejection of the Obama years and set the stage for winning back the Presidency in 2016. Then we could get back to the America we all know and love — the one that Dinesh D’Souza portrays in his brilliant movie (and for which he’ll probably end up going to prison). American politics tends to move back and forth in cycles and this particular one seems to be coming to an end. If Republicans can win back control of

Frustration over stalled immigration action
doesn’t mean Obama can act unilaterally
Washington Post, by Editorial    Original Article

STYMIED BY congressional paralysis, President Obama is reportedly considering unilateral action to address — though surely not fix — the nation’s immigration policy mess and the more recent surge of minors streaming across the southwestern border. The president’s frustration is understandable. Faced with a genuine humanitarian crisis, Congress’s failure to pass a workable fix is unconscionable. In the Republican-controlled House, the GOP bowed to its most extreme lawmakers in passing measures that have zero chance of becoming law — and would have paved the way for deportations of blameless young people raised in this country after being brought here by their

U.S. Civil Rights Commissioner Says College

A U.S. Civil Rights Commissioner thinks that college students are not sufficiently developed to enjoy their free-speech rights. Democrat Michael Yaki, who previously was senior adviser to Nancy Pelosi (D., Calif.), explained why he believes campus speech codes should be tightened during a U.S. Commission on Civil Rights briefing on sexual-harassment law in education. “Certain factors in how the juvenile or adolescent or young adult brain processes information is vastly different from the way that we adults do,” he said, according to a transcript from law professor Eugene Volokh, who publishes the blog the Volokh Conspiracy at the Washington Post.

Jonathan Alter at the Daily Beast has an idea that will infuse the president’s “economic patriotism” rhetoric with some bite: Compel companies to take “loyalty oaths” to prove their patriotism. You may find this suggestion a little creepy, maybe even a little fascistic; but Alter says that “it’s time for red-blooded Americans to take matters into our own hands.” And by taking the matter into “our” hands, Alter means that President Obama would unilaterally bar any company that practices “inversion” – corporate merging with foreign firms to save on U.S. tax bills – from doing business with the federal government.

They’re putting their own people in the line of fire — and doing it by the book. The Israeli military said it has captured a Hamas manual on urban warfare — called “Introduction to the City War” — that extols the benefits of civilian deaths and openly admits that Israel tries to avoid them. The Israel Defense Forces also said the manual — whose cover shows images of militants wielding rocket-propelled grenades and automatic weapons — crows about the propaganda value of the deaths of innocents. “The destruction of civilian homes: This increases the hatred of the citizens toward the attackers and increases

Via RCP, I want to believe it, I almost believe it — but I don’t really believe it. All the makings of a Democratic clusterfark are there. If O legalizes five million workers, plenty of blue-collar Democrats are bound to put two and two together and wonder what that means for their wages. And plenty of Democratic Senate incumbents in red states, like, oh, let’s say Mark Pryor, are going to panic, knowing what could happen if the backlash among conservatives is as ferocious as everyone expects. In fact, as Newt alludes to, both Pryor and North Carolina’s Kay Hagan

A Russian crime ring has amassed the largest known collection of stolen Internet credentials, including 1.2 billion user name and password combinations and more than 500 million email addresses, security researchers say. The records, discovered by Hold Security, a firm in Milwaukee, include confidential material gathered from 420,000 websites, including household names, and small Internet sites. Hold Security has a history of uncovering significant hacks, including the theft last year of tens of millions of records from Adobe Systems. Hold Security would not name the victims, citing nondisclosure agreements and a reluctance to name companies whose sites remained vulnerable. At

Note the time of the rocket fire, too — 7:50 am, just ten minutes before the cease-fire began today. Could these have been the missiles that hit the West Bank? I totally get that if you run a monarchy or are a dictator or if you’re a good president, your birthday might be cause for celebration. Oh, it’s the Queen’s birthday? Let’s celebrate. The ongoing Israel operations in Gaza, combined with the continuing, brutal sectarian fighting in Iraq and the prospect of that country’s disintegration, have driven oil prices up and will likely keep them high for some time. Combined with Libya’s well-advanced state of anarchy, Syria’s grinding civil war and terrorist attacks elsewhere (in Algeria, Nigeria and Sudan), the entire Middle East and major parts of Africa could be descending into chaos. How can America fight back? One necessary response is to begin to break the dependence on foreign oil that has long threatened our national security and compromised our economic viability. ATLANTA — In the early 2000s, a young researcher at the Centers for Disease Control named Greg Millett set out to solve an epidemiological mystery. Nobody could explain why black Americans, particularly black gay men, had such high rates of HIV infection compared to the rest of the population. How were they putting themselves in so much danger? What were they doing differently from everyone else? Millett began with a survey of the published research, but that only seemed to raise more questions. Study after study seemed to arrive at the same conclusion: Black gay men take fewer risks in the

President Obama returned from his full-time job as the Democratic Party’s fundraiser-in-chief to host today’s U.S.-Africa Leaders Summit. As he winged his way back to Washington from Kansas City aboard Air Force One, the president sat for an interview with editors of The Economist. The interview was pure Barack Obama, and it revealed him for what he is — an intellectually agile partisan fantasist. According to Mr. Obama, there really haven’t been that many problems, but those we may be experiencing are the fault not of his policies or leadership, but of the fact that he continues to have to contend

The Tiny House Movement is a growing group of people who are happy to downsize the space that they live in and enjoy simplified lives as a result. While the average American home is around 2600 square feet, the typical small or tiny house is around 100-400 square feet. Scroll down for video -Large homes come

Obamacare plans have shrunk payments to physicians so much that some doctors say they won’t be able to afford to accept Obamacare coverage, NPR reports. Many of the eight million sign-ups in Obamacare exchanges nationwide already face more limited choices for physicians and hospitals than those in the private insurance market. But with low physician reimbursement rates, the problem could get even worse. For a typical quick patient visit, Dr. Doug Gerard, a Connecticut internist, told NPR a private insurer would pay $100 while Medicare would pay around $80. But Obamacare plans are more likely to pay closer to $80, which Gerard

Pelosi lashed out at Rep. Tom Marino, R-Pa., after he accused Democrats of neglecting the immigration issue when they controlled the White House and Congress in 2009 and 2010. She could be seen walking over to him and pointing her finger at him -- he later said Pelosi called him "insignificant." Speaking to Fox News on Monday, Marino

Chris McDaniel is launching his formal legal challenge of the election results, saying the evidence is so conclusive that he will be calling for courts to recognize him as the true victor of the race rather than calling for a new election. “Chris McDaniel clearly, clearly won the Republican vote in the runoff,” McDaniel attorney Mitch Tyner said at a Monday press conference. “I say that very assuredly because that’s what the mathematics show. It’s not what I’m arguing. After the election, we did some post-election polling.

Sen. Pat Roberts fended off an aggressive challenger Tuesday in the Kansas Republican primary, dealing another blow to a national tea party movement that has targeted longtime Washington incumbents. Milton Wolf, 43, a Leawood radiologist making his first run for public office, failed to pull the upset in the race against Roberts, 78, whose political dates to the late 1960s, when he was a congressional aide. After surviving the primary, Roberts is a huge favorite to win his fourth, six-year term in November.
