China is investigating a Canadian couple who ran a coffee shop on the Chinese border with North Korea for the suspected theft of military and intelligence information and for threatening national security, China’s Foreign Ministry said on Tuesday. The official Xinhua news agency identified the two as Kevin Garratt and Julia Dawn Garratt. In a brief report, Xinhua said the State Security Bureau of Dandong city in northeast Liaoning province was investigating the case, adding it involved the stealing of state secrets. Neither the Foreign Ministry nor Xinhua said whether the couple had been detained, although the ministry said the Canadian embassy

Quite fortuitous!
I was thinking of moving to the China/N.Korea border to open a coffee shop, but thought there was too much Canadian competition.

Russia runs out of patience,

The column of the humanitarian convoy from Russia started moving towards Luhansk on Friday, Aug 22. The decision to move the convoy was made at the Russian Foreign Ministry. However, representatives of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) said earlier that the trucks could not drive into the territory of Ukraine due to the absence of security guarantees from the Ukrainian authorities. The website of the Russian foreign political department posted a message about Moscow´s decision to send the convoy through Ukraine without guarantees from Kiev. Russian President Vladimir Putin is aware of the decision related to the humanitarian

Obama’s remarks on Ferguson are

If President Obama’s comments on race in the anguished aftermath of the not-guilty verdict in George Zimmerman’s trial gleamed in light, his words on the rage that has thumped Ferguson, Mo., were shrouded in darkness. They revealed a gifted leader whose palpable discomfort with race has made him a sometimes unreliable and distant narrator of black life. When Obama gave his fullest statement yet on the cataclysm in Ferguson, he was cautious to a fault. The president understandably didn’t want to fan the violence. He had also learned his lesson after he lamented the stupidity of the police officer who arrested

The mathematics of civil disobedience has always been pretty straightforward: As Mohandas Gandhi pointed out to the raj, 100,000 government officials cannot control 350 million citizens if the citizens do not cooperate. There are not enough police in St. Louis County to control the people who do not wish to be controlled by the police in St. Louis County, as least as currently constituted. There are two ways to govern: By consent or by terror. In the United States, we govern by consent. (Mostly.) We spend altogether too much time talking about sentiment, e.g., polling Americans about whether they feel that the

A Hamas official has said for the first time that members of the Palestinian Islamist group were responsible for the abduction of three Israeli teenagers whose murders ignited the current conflict with Israel. Sheikh Saleh al-Aruri, who is exiled in Turkey, told a conference of Islamic scholars in Istanbul that Gilad Shaar, Naftali Frenkel, both aged 16, and Eyal Yifrach, 19, had been seized by the Izzedine al-Qassam brigades, Hamas´ military wing. Mr al-Aruri said the "kidnapping to Hebron of the three settlers" - which he called a "blessed heroic action" - was carried out in support of Palestinian prisoners staging fasting

Before they cut off his head, they treated him like a whipping boy. James Foley — brave until the end — was subjected to beatings and psychological torture with mock executions before he was butchered by his Islamic State captors, it was revealed Thursday. “This group, which has a taste for the macabre, made him stand against a wall in a pose as if he had been crucified,” Didier Francois, a French reporter who had also been held by ISIS, told radio station Europe1. A few days after 18-year-old Mike Brown was gunned down in Ferguson, Missouri, White House officials enlisted an unusual source for on-the-ground intelligence amid the chaos and tear gas: the Rev. Al Sharpton, a fiery activist who became a household name by provoking rather than pacifying. Sharpton—once such a pariah that Clinton administration officials rushed through their ribbon-cuttings in Harlem for fear he’d show up and force them to, gasp, shake his hand—arrived on the scene 72 hours after the shooting at the request of Brown’s grandfather, who had admired his advocacy on behalf of the family of slain Florida teen

Let me me begin by acknowledging that this inspirational title is lifted from a tweet by screen actor James Woods. And now I will explicate his tweet. Every sentient human being whose brain isn’t stuffed with ideological fairy dust can see that Obama is behind every major scandal of his administration from Benghazi to the I.R.S. disgrace. How can one know this? Because the culprits haven’t been fired. Moreover, if they are serial liars like Susan Rice, they’ve actually been promoted to posts where their loyalty to the criminal-in-chief can do America and its citizens even more damage, if that is

KABUL, Afghanistan — The attorney general of Afghanistan on Wednesday ordered the expulsion of an American correspondent for The New York Times, Matthew Rosenberg, and barred him from re-entering the country. The action, the first public expulsion of a Western journalist since the Taliban regime, came less than a day after the office of the attorney general, Mohammad Ishaq Aloko, issued an order prohibiting Mr. Rosenberg from leaving the country while he was under investigation. Both orders related to an article written by Mr. Rosenberg that was published Tuesday by The Times. It said that high-ranking government officials were discussing

When it comes to combatting ISIS, the Obama administration has precious few successes to talk about. So today it touted a failure: U.S. Special Operations forces staged an unsuccessful operation this summer to rescue photojournalist James Foley and other Americans being held in Syria by Islamic State militants, according to senior Obama administration officials. The attempt, involving several dozen U.S. commandos, one of whom was injured in a fierce firefight with the militants, was the first known U.S. ground operation in Syria since the country’s descent into civil war. It came after at least six European hostages freed by the

In a Wednesday interview with Bloomberg News, Ryan said he supported a "path to legalization" for all of the country´s illegal immigrants. Attorney General Eric Holder said Thursday that his Justice Department is opening a criminal investigation into the brutal execution by Islamic State militants of American journalist James Foley, in the latest move by the administration to use the criminal justice system to pursue terrorists. The announcement comes as the administration steps up its airstrike campaign against the same militant organization -- and mulls additional American boots on the ground in Iraq. Holder, during remarks in Washington, confirmed the "open criminal investigation" into Foley´s beheading, which was recorded and posted online this week. "Those who would perpetrate such acts need to understand something --
