Anatomy of a Power Grab
New York Times, by Ross Douthat

Original Article

Since my Sunday column was a little on the shrill side, accusing President Obama of contemplating domestic policy “caesarism” on immigration policy, I thought I’d do a follow-up addressing the various, “maybe you should calm down” objections. 1) How can you accuse the president of planning a power grab when we don’t even know what he’s planning to do? Well, actually, we do know roughly what he’s considering, because White House sources keep telling the media about it. Read National Journal’s Major Garrett a month ago, or read the Washington Post on Saturday. The message is clear, the details consistent: Obama is

Its not a power grab, its the abdication of congressional responsibilities.
Nature abhors a vacuum.Hussein O´bama is merely responding to that great sucking sound under the Capitol dome.

Great article, except where it refers to the House as dysfunctional. In reality, the House has passed numerous bills on various issues which the Dem led Senate refuses to take up.

The Senate is dysfunctional to a purpose. Reid does not want the Dems to take up controversial issues that hurt their chance at re-election.

Nice to see this in the NYT.

The Constitution means nothing to Barack Obama. He believes he is a law unto himself and unfortunately, he does not get much push back from Congress. Some are too afraid to challenge him and others agree with him. If he does take Executive action on the immigration situation, he will have forever changed the balance of power. The Congress might as well go home because they will then become irrelevant. This is dangerous territory for any Republic. We will be inches away from a dictatorship. The country needs men of honor and integrity who will not allow a community organizer to shred the Constitution. Politicians just won´t cut it. Either we stand for the rule of law, or we stand for nothing. It is a time for choosing.

Yes, #2. As I understand it the House has sent over 360 BIPARTISAN bills to the senate and Reid has sat on all of them. But according to zippy it´s the House Republicans who are causing gridlock.

All these polls that show very high dissatisfaction with Congress - I would like to see the questions because unless they´re asking: How satisfied are you with the Senate, then these polls are useless. And why isn´t this being broadcast all over that the problem in the Congress is the Senate and that someone needs to remind Obama that the fact that the House doesn´t agree with him is because the people they were elected to represent don´t agree with him. Obama´s attacks on the House is for intents and purposes an attack on We The People.

Rush brought up a good point yesterday. He thinks O won´t "do" amnesty because he knows the American people hate the idea. More, when the Democrats had control of Congress, they did nothing on immigration for that very reason -- they didn´t want the blame for something that unpopular.

Here is the golden nugget: O wants Republicans to do immigration reform so THEY get the blame. All his talk about doing amnesty is just talk. Rush thinks he won´t do it unless GOP fingerprints are on it, which makes sense -- typical Obama -- never take the blame for anything Americans hate. Blame Bush, blame Republicans, blame Jews, blame the media, blame your butt. Whatever.

It is a thought-provoking strategy: Talk so much about doing amnesty or "immigration reform", that the GOP will be scared into doing it themselves for fear that Hispanics will turn against them if they don´t. (They won´t vote GOP in any great numbers anyway.)

I believe the GOP should do nothing about immigration reform except to talk incessantly about closing borders and deporting illegals. THAT is what Americans want.

Gridlock is not an excuse for the president to assume powers not given him by the constitution. If an issue cannot be resolved because the congress won´t act then it just remains unresolved until an election provides a congress that will resolve the problem. If the constitution does not allow you to resolve a problem then either amend the constitution as provided in the constitution or live with the problem. We live by rule of law not rule of men so if a law causes a problem then change it in the way prescribed by law. That precludes the president assuming powers not granted him by law. If there is a problem interpreting the law then the Supreme Court decides what the law means, not the president.

This president is clearly assuming powers not granted him by the constitution and getting away with it because elements of the congress (the Senate) are conspiring to let him get away with it. It remains to be seen if the people will allow the situation to continue. This reveals a fault in the constitution. There should be some way for members of congress (or the executive branch) to go straight to the Supreme Court to get a decision on the constitutionality of such situations.

CHICAGO/MILWAUKEE — A federal appeals court has reinstated Wisconsin’s voter photo identification law. U.S. District Judge Lynn Adelman struck the law down as unconstitutional in April, saying it unfairly burdens poor and minority voters who may lack such identification. Republican Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen asked the 7th Circuit Court of Appeals in Chicago to overturn that ruling. The 7th Circuit issued a ruling late Friday afternoon lifting Aldeman’s stay and allowing the law to go into effect before the November elections. State attorneys asked a three-judge 7th Circuit panel during oral arguments on Friday to immediately reinstate the law. Van Hollen’s appeal remains

President Obama’s promise “to degrade and ultimately destroy ISIL” may or may not end up causing problems for the Islamic State. Surely however, it further degraded our security by further engaging us in the combination of fantasy and half measures that has earned America a reputation for un-seriousness and opened hunting season on Americans everywhere. Obama degrades America by dwelling in a politically convenient fantasy world. In his September 10 2014 prime-time speech, Obama claimed to have made America safer by combining the withdrawal of troops from abroad with the killing of Osama bin Laden and “taking out

Louisville, Ky. – Solid ground isn´t always a certainty. Sinkholes can lurk anywhere, beneath suburban homes, city streets or even football stadiums and museums. It´s basic geology: Sinkholes open when soil collapses into large holes, caused by flowing water in underground limestone. Their toll can be dramatic, swallowing homes, trees or anything else on the collapsing ground — even prized Corvettes. The Southeastern U.S. is prime territory for the geological phenomena — a potentially costly game of subterranean roulette. In Tennessee, a sinkhole opened during renovations on the football stadium at Austin Peay State University.

There exist any number of fair criticisms of George W. Bush’s Iraq policy — that he underestimated the resistance we would encounter, that he deferred too long to failing generals, that the surge ought to have come sooner, and so on. The one thing that can’t be said about him is this: that his war policy was driven by the polls and politics. This is the operative difference between Presidents Bush and Obama, which the latter drove home in his prime-time address Wednesday evening. On the surface, there are similarities between the two. Like Bush’s Iraq reset, Obama’s comes near the midway point

Qua speech, Barack Obama’s address Wednesday on the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria was surprisingly terrible: a disorganized mess, insincere and unconvincing. To appreciate just how bad and bizarre it was, compare the president’s speech announcing a new air campaign in Iraq and Syria to Dwight Eisenhower’s 1958 statement on his decision to intervene in Lebanon with 14,000—14,000!—troops. The statement contains no chest-thumping about America’s leadership in science and medicine. No pivot to the auto industry and medical research. Check your hygiene privilege. Cabbies who smell badly are probably just oppressed folks who came directly from their terrorist training camp to the airport and didn’t have time to change. Body odour is among 52 criteria that officials at San Diego International Airport use to judge taxi drivers. Cabbies say that smacks of prejudice and discrimination. It does discriminate between cabbies who smell like an open sewer and those who don’t. It further prejudges what a good smell is.
