The U.S. Supreme Court Tuesday refused to stay the execution of a Missouri inmate who is set to become the first man put to death since an execution in Arizona went awry last month, in which an inmate took two hours to die from a disputed drug cocktail. Michael Worthington, 43, raped and murdered a college student in 1995. He will be executed at 12:01 a.m. Wednesday at a prison south of St. Louis, calling into question the Arizona execution and two others that were botched in Ohio and Oklahoma, as well as the secrecy involving the drugs used during

How exactly is an execution botched if it achieves the correct result? The only thing botched about these executions is that it is taking two decades to off these hoodlums.

If the perps don´t like the poison cocktail, kill them the same way they killed their victims. Let them reap what they sowed. And do it more expediently.

There are moments in edited TV content when a keyed-in viewer can see a cut intended to make a “comfort edit”, smoothing out the narrative. The Chuck Todd interview with President Obama was riddled with them. Even when being interviewed by a fellow ideological traveler. Donte Stallworth, the former NFL player hired to a fellowship at the Huffington Post, says that journalists Jeremy Scahill and Glenn Greenwald “catapulted” his interest in national security reporting. (Snip) As for Stallworth’s experience in writing stories, he cited two pieces that he’d done for the lefty website Think Progress — one on Michael Sam and NFL “distractions” and another on Robert Griffin III. According to Stallworth, that’s the extent of his published archive. But that doesn’t include Twitter, of course, a platform on which Stallworth has been prolific — perhaps too prolific. Explosions were heard in Ukraine’s port city of Mariupol as the government and pro-Russian separatists tried to hold onto a truce accord intended to stem months of bloodshed. No casualties have been reported in the past 24 hours, military spokesman Andriy Lysenko said in televised remarks in the capital Kiev yesterday, the first time that’s happened since the insurgents unleashed a counteroffensive last month. Presidents Petro Poroshenko and Vladimir Putin spoke by phone on the progress of the truce, agreeing that the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe should monitor the accord, according to the Ukrainian leader’s website.

Although few medical experts realize it, part of the population in West Africa is immune to the Ebola virus, according to virologists who specialize in the disease. Assuming they are correct, and if those people can be identified, they could be a great help in fighting the outbreak. Immune persons could safely tend the sick and bury the dead just as smallpox survivors did in the centuries before smallpox vaccine. Also, antibodies could be harvested from their blood to treat new Ebola victims. But many factors remain unclear, including which Africans have antibodies and how much antibody is needed to be protective. The

The method means that we can finally see tiny vessels called capillaries, which form the brain’s circulation network. What concerned Kelly most in the first part of the interview was that “little Eichmanns” comment, the argument being that Eichmann played a role in horrible atrocities even though he didn’t directly carry out the Final Solution, which he views as similar to the financial

Arguments for a universal basic income (UBI) — in which everyone without exception would receive an equal stipend — have flourished in policy-centric areas of the internet, including The Week. Advocates of UBI see it as a blunter, more effective means of reducing poverty and shrinking the inequality gap. But even if UBI proponents are right on the merits, Tyler Cowen argues that the politics of the issue are not favorable. Under
