Gannett becomes the latest media

Gannett said Tuesday it plans to spin off USA Today and the rest of the company’s publishing assets, separating those assets from the broadcasting and digital businesses. The move to split the media company’s assets comes just a few days after E.W. Scripps Co. (SSP) unveiled a similar plan. The two companies are following a move by Twenty-First Century Fox (FOXA), which spun off News Corp (NWSA), the owner of The Wall Street Journal and other print properties, a little over a year ago, while Time Warner (TWX) recently unloaded Time Inc. (TIME), which owns People, Entertainment Weekly, Fortune and

Gannett´s East Coast liberal propaganda and dummied-down reporting didn´t sell in local markets nationwide, after they bought out and shut down the competition? Who´d have guessed, when via the Internet we can pick and choose what we want? Likewise Scripps; centralized direction of editorial content and minimized local reporting reporting does not seem to work, so maybe we´ll see more local news operations tailored to local sensibilities.

Jacksonville, Fla. - Residents at a Westside apartment complex where a 12-year-old murder suspect used to live said they were terrified of him. Sharron Townsend was arrested Thursday on a murder charge after police said he randomly shot and killed a 54-year-old homeless man in June. Townsend used to live in an apartment off Indian Lakes Court. "No good. I don´t have anything good to say about him," said one woman who didn´t want to be identified. Neighbors said Townsend was always in trouble, starting fights and even begging on the corner, pretending to be homeless.

Nearly a quarter-mile off the road, Thomas J. Bergstrom, 51, built a 20-foot-by-20-foot compound of pallets and bright blue tarps. A transient, that´s where he hooked up a TV and watched it from his scruffy recliner near 100 NE Pine Island Road. Anthony Cashdollar found him Saturday morning, stretched out on the ground, blood congealing on his arm and mouth, just feet from the recliner. "I was so shocked, I just sat my hand on his back," Cashdollar, 18, said Sunday night, adding that he called "Tommy, Tommy, Tommy. ... Then it hit me that Tommy was dead."

An entrepreneur has gambled his home on building a toll road after becoming frustrated at council delays in clearing a commuter route blocked by a landslip. Mike Watts is charging motorists £2 per journey to use his bypass made from rolled chippings and avoid the closed section of the A431 between Bath and Bristol. A landslip in February forced the closure of Kelston Road and, while Bath and North East Somerset Council said it has begun repairs costing £1.5million, the road is not due to re-open until Christmas. A Royal Navy support ship has been sent to the Libyan capital Tripoli to evacuate the last remaining British citizens after the ambassador decided "reluctantly" to close down operations in the country. More fighting around Tripoli airport killed 22 people overnight, as competing militias fought for control in both the east and west of the country. Other embassies, including America´s, has already closed down and pulled out staff. The British ambassador, Michael Aron, and his key diplomats had stayed on but on Friday the Foreign Office also decided to close from Monday. When he left Guatemala, 16-year-old Jonas Cua thought the professional smugglers his family had hired would get him across the border and on a van to his uncle in Hudson County. But he soon learned otherwise. The smugglers, known as coyotes, told him and the other teens and children traveling with him that when they reached the United States they would be left for U.S. immigration officials to find. And sure enough, his trip was cut short in Texas, where he was detained by Border Patrol agents. (Snip) On Friday, Cua reached his uncle, who lives in Hudson County,

Memphis, TN - An Oklahoma college student was drugged, robbed, and beaten during a weekend trip to Memphis. It started with a "Mickey" on Beale Street and ended with the victim in jail. At times he says he felt like a zombie. WMC Action News 5 is keeping this 18-year-old´s identity concealed, for the purpose of this story his name is "Sam." Sam was in a hospital bed hours after a nightmarish chain of events last weekend that left his head bruised and bloodied, his feet bandaged. It all started innocently enough with a pink drink on Beale Street.

Mass immigration will damage the living standards of everyone in the country as minor economic benefits are outweighed by the social pressures of a relentlessly rising population, one of Britain’s most eminent Left-wing economists declared yesterday. Professor Robert Rowthorn, Emeritus Professor of Economics at Cambridge University and a longstanding adviser to Whitehall departments, said the economic advantages of immigration are ‘unlikely to be very large’. But the downside – from building on the green belt to the overcrowding of cities – means that the consequences of large-scale immigration ‘are mostly negative for the

Trenton — A new poll on the 2016 presidential race shows Gov. Chris Christie´s popularity among voters in the swing state of Ohio is still lagging. The Quinnipiac University survey, released this morning, shows a larger percentage of Ohio voters see New Jersey´s Republican governor in a negative light than those who view him positively — 36 to 34 percent. At the same time, Christie trails Democratic frontrunner Hillary Clinton by 9 percentage points — 46 to 37 percent — in a mock-head-to-head matchup for the White House. That´s a 1-point drop from the group´s last survey, in May.

That seems like an awfully strong word, but it is the term that distinguished law professor Glenn Reynolds, no hysteric, uses to describe the Obama administration’s oft-reported plan to issue executive amnesty to five or six million illegal immigrants in violation of federal law. Glenn’s characterization is a fair one. When a tyrant asserts the right to rule by decree in a state that has formerly been subject to the rule of law, he is commonly described as carrying out a coup d’etat. That is just what the Obama administration has done, and reportedly will continue to do. When Obama changed

The obsession by the Obama-Kerry administration with imposing a cease-fire on the warring parties in the Hamas-Israel war will go down in history as one of the most strategic mistakes in military history. Here is a fact the administration deliberately and maliciously ignored: In the history of modern warfare, no terrorist group has ever honored a cease-fire. Hamas has broken every cease-fire it ever said it would honor. Every single one. Even the Israel-Hamas 2012 cease fire, brokered by then-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, was simply agreed to by Hamas to give it an opportunity to restock its military arsenal, pressure Israel

Something rather dangerous is happening in American politics right now, all the more so for being taken for granted by many of the people watching it unfold. I do not mean the confusion of House Republicans, or the general gridlock in Congress, which are impeding legislative action on the child migrant crisis (among other matters). Incompetence and gridlock are significant problems, indeed severe ones, but they’re happening within the context of a constitutional system that allows for — and can survive — congressional inaction. What is different — more cynical and more destructive — is the course President Obama is

Republicans believe that the deepening crisis in Gaza could ultimately loosen the grip that the Democratic Party has traditionally held upon American Jewish voters. While declarations of a rift between Democrats and the Jewish community have proven premature in the past, things could be different this time, they assert. Just in the last week, the Obama administration used unusually strong language to condemn the shelling of a United Nations-run school in Gaza, apparently by the Israeli military, and drafted a document for a cease-fire that Israeli officials denounced as favoring Hamas.
