The black HIV epidemic: A public health
mystery from Atlanta’s gay community

Washington Post, by Jeff Guo

Original Article

ATLANTA — In the early 2000s, a young researcher at the Centers for Disease Control named Greg Millett set out to solve an epidemiological mystery. Nobody could explain why black Americans, particularly black gay men, had such high rates of HIV infection compared to the rest of the population. How were they putting themselves in so much danger? What were they doing differently from everyone else? Millett began with a survey of the published research, but that only seemed to raise more questions. Study after study seemed to arrive at the same conclusion: Black gay men take fewer risks in the

I cannot reconcile these two passages from the article:

1. Black gay men take fewer risks in the bedroom than white gay men. They are just as, if not more, consistent about condom use and STD testing. They have fewer sex partners. They are less likely to abuse injection drugs.

...and

black men are more likely to have other STDs like gonorrhea or syphilis, which increases one’s risk of contracting HIV. The sheer prevalence of HIV in the community means that despite getting tested just as frequently, black men are still more likely to have an undiagnosed infection, a circumstance that makes them more likely to pass on the disease. Lack of healthcare access raises another issue, in that those who do have HIV are less likely to be on the antiretroviral therapies that could make them less infectious to others.

They are so careful, so judicious in their choice of partners, much less sexually active, yet they have more STDs, undiagnosed infections and haven´t gotten their act together on health care.

How can you be so careful about your sex life while at the same time have more STDs, undiagnosed infections and a seeming lack of prior planning about health care?

Sorry, this "study" needs study.

If half the houses on a street burn down within a month, it is a safe assumption that they are being torched.

The problem with so much of CDC/NIH research these days is...political correctness of course. The researchers are biased, the numbers flawed, the results debated from an ideological perspective.

FTA: "As a child he dreamed of becoming a civil rights lawyer, of putting the ghosts of racism and inequality on trial." An inadvertent admission of the truth: the civil rights business (and it is a business) is chasing ghosts while attempting to convince the masses the ghosts are real.

FTA:
"...Despite all this, black men—gay, straight, or bisexual—are 6 times more likely than white men to contract HIV in a given year."

This article is what I refer to as intellectual idiocy.

First: there is no such thing as bisexual; once you jump in that cesspool your dirty, doesn´t matter how long you stay, how much you like it or how many times you return.
Second: there has been NO CHANGE in the risk assessments for contracting HIV. The two major at risk groups have always been and will always remain homosexual men and intravenous drug users sharing needles. HIV is caused by the ripping of flesh and the transmission of blood types in that act. No mystery genius.
Third: its a violent act, maybe, just maybe its how these "partners" are interacting is what makes the difference, condoms rip.

Concentrated, promiscuous sexual activity amongst human beings results in a loss of herd immunity and thus increase your chances of catching something.

For instance, if I were to accumulate 20 partners from a group of the same 50 people over a period of a year, I would likely catch something from one of them over that duration. However, if I were to accumulate 20 partners from a much larger group of 10,000 people over the same period, I would be less likely to catch something.

A lot of reporting fails to note that concentrating promiscuity - as is the case for segregated sexual cultures - increases your chances of catching a venereal disease. Having a black-to-black sexual paradigm within the male-to-male paradigm is concentration upon concentration, and has a double-amplification effect on disease transmission.

HIV effects 85-90% of man and only 10- 15 of women regardless of race.

The only conclusion we can make is that virus
is homophobic and racist.

Virus simply hates black homosexual man.

Correction:
HIV likes (or better is married to) black homosexual man and wants to spend his entire life with them.
For better or worse till the end.

FTA: "Black gay men take fewer risks in the bedroom than white gay men."

I suspect the writer is doing a linguistic dance here. In common parlance, what he says of "gay" men (i.e., those who identify as such) may well be true, but it´s contradicted by the line near the end about black homosexuals being less likely than their white counterparts to discuss HIV status.

Rather, the big issue in the black community is the "down low" culture, which gave rise to the term "men who have sex with men," or MSMs, because these folks have sex with other men in places like Man´s Country in Chicago, but do not view themselves as homosexual, and do not use condoms because only sissy white boys catch the AIDS. Couple down low with prison and promiscuous sex in general, and there´s your higher rate of every STD in the black community.

somehow it would look like either
1. condoms are not near as effective as thought
or
2. gays only use them when having sex with people who know and admit they are HIV positive

Having sex with a HIV+ man and trusting a little bit of latex to protect you, or trusting a casual pickup that he is HIV- so you can go bareback? that kind of thought process just screams out "Obama voter".

My take-away: Bad behavior gets the money and resources that could otherwise go to medical conditions that have nothing to do with behavior. Even for homosexuals. Regardless of whether it is a choice or not, the model is one partner and fidelity. It would work for homosexuals too. As with heterosexuals, some stray but it drastically reduces the chances of spreading disease. Thus it is simply bad behavior. I find the subject of the article disgusting from the waste of precious resources and those who are acting badly believe they should get a bigger bit of that apple. Very selfish.

There are so many sweeping, unsubstantiated (no footnotes) generalities in this article that it is hard to wade through. And the author has tossed in the old chestnuts - the Tuskegee syphyllis experiment, for example - as reasons why blacks might not seek medical treatment.

I will throw in my own sweeping generality based upon things I´ve read about blacks not trusting white doctors and there not being enough black doctors in their communities. I´d say that black men are not big on taking care of their health. So we have diabetes, heart disease and....HIV. And the "safe sex" that Millett says they are practicing may be a fabrication from his mind or from self-protecting self-reporting. More fabrication.

The only thing that makes any sense is the probable correlation between having other STDs and getting HIV. That is a no-brainer.

#20 cont´d.

Like every Liberal on the planet, Millett believes more money needs to be diverted to black HIV:

The key message was that money had to be shifted toward the people at highest risk—gay men; black men and women; Latinos and Latinas. Minorities are the face of the epidemic these days, their tightly clustered social networks helping HIV to flourish. Invoking Millett’s own body of work, the report warned readers not to blame the victim: “Many individuals in [minority] groups may not engage in greater risk behaviors than others, but they still can be more likely to become infected with HIV. Research has shown that the higher risk for these groups is associated with the sheer number of HIV-positive persons in the communities where they live.”

How does Millett or anyone else know that blacks do not engage in "greater risk behaviors" than others? If the "sheer number" of Hiv-positive persons in the communities where they live is higher, and they confine their activity to those of the same ethnicity, then they are engaging in greater risk behavior.

I see no mystery here.

I see many posts from younger people on Facebook. The white folks are posting pictures of their cats, dogs, children, guns, friends and political pictures. The Black folks are posting pictures that look like advertisements for sex. This is true whether they are gay or straight. If you have a lifestyle that is centered on monogamy whether you are gay or straight you are much less likely to contract sexually transmitted diseases. I realize this is overstating the obvious.

Those who put this bogus analysis together will probably be at the next State Dinner or seated next to Mooch at the next SOTUS. "Good job!"

(emphasis added)

Science magazine called it the “Breakthrough of the Year,” and it has birthed a new catchphrase in the prevention community. “Treatment as prevention” describes an approach that puts attention on those who are HIV positive—identifying them and giving them medication so they are less contagious. The phrase also refers to using drugs—“treatment”—preemptively in healthy people to prevent HIV infection. This was the recommendation of another set of breakthrough studies that showed a once-a-day dose of anti-retrovirals, if taken regularly, could reduce the risk of HIV infection by 90 percent. Together, these drug-based strategies jigsaw happily with the White House’s mandate to deliver more funding to those with greatest need. Instead of sprinkling prevention dollars on everyone indiscriminately, the latest programs target groups with the highest rates of HIV, black gay men especially.

I suspect that the research is based upon polling, and of course, no one ever lies on poll questions.

Well right at the top of the article we get this gem:

Editor’s note: Several passages have been removed from this story because the source of those passages, Mickyel Bradford, has admitted to fabricating them. The passages include descriptions of a lunch in Bradford’s town and a ball that Bradford claimed he attended with a man identified as Seth. Bradford now confirms that neither of those events occurred as described. Additionally, Bradford admits the two men never discussed getting tested for HIV. All passages concerning the two men have been removed.

So what else is fabricated. And they seem to have left out the effect of the large percentage of black men who have done prison time. Thanks to the ACLU there can be no segregation between inmates with HIV/AIDS and those not infected. With the term "rape culture" having originated in men´s prisons you can see where that leads. The article and study are very flawed. Just fluff.

Hmmm, let´s examine this. The human body has a certain canal that is uses to get rid of that which it can´t use or is harmful. These people use that canal as a sex organ. It´s not made for sex, so the sides rupture, opening a vector directly into the place the entire body is trying to prevent it from going, the bloodstream. These people happen to get sick with STDs at about six times the rate of the rest of the population. Let´s see, how hard is this to figure out??? But always remember: homosexuality is a civil rights issue, not a public health issue. This, my friends is the key to the entire problem. Once they got our woefully ignorant country to accept the idea that homosexuality is a civil rights issue, they won the entire argument. Now we are left with smart people unable to see what is right in front of their eyes.

Nearly 35,000 walruses were discovered this month on a northwest Alaskan shore as result of being unable to find sea ice to rest upon, a problem aggravated by climate change, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) said. The unusually massive walrus gatherings were first spotted on Sept. 13 when NOAA conducted its annual arctic marine mammal aerial survey, a spokeswoman told the Associated Press. The marine mammals use sea ice as diving platforms to hunt for food in shallow areas, or as resting points to avoid long, exhausting swims. While it is normal for sea ice to recede into

Ever get the sense that the middle class is downwardly mobile, being pressed to the floor and squeezed to the limit? It’s not happening by accident. Someone is doing the squeezing: a new class of entertainment and tech plutocrats, cheered on and abetted by a priesthood of media, government and academic elites.(snip) This New Class, for instance, venerates the city and despises suburbia. They think you should feel the same way — and in innumerable magazine and newspaper pieces, they twist facts to make it sound as if America loves living in apartments and taking trains to work.

The United States informed Iran in advance of its intention to strike Islamic State militants in Syria and told Tehran that it would not target the forces of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, a senior Iranian official told Reuters. "Iran was concerned about Assad´s position and his government being weakened in case of any action against IS (Islamic State) in Syria and brought this issue up in meetings with Americans," a senior Iranian official said on condition of anonymity. "This issue was first discussed in Geneva and then was discussed thoroughly in New York where Iran was assured that Assad and

Former Virginia senator Jim Webb said today he is "seriously" considering a 2016 presidential bid, and will make a decision within the next two to five months. "I am seriously looking at the possibility of running for president," Webb, a Democrat, said in an appearance at the National Press Club. "We´ve had a lot of discussions among people I respect and trust about the future of this country, and we´re going to continue to have these discussions over the next two to five months," he said. In her just-released memoir, 27 year-old "Girls" star Lena Dunham claims that as a 19 year-old Oberlin College student in Ohio, she was raped by a college Republican. In the first chapter that addresses the encounter, Dunham describes the "ill-fated evening of lovemaking" as awkward and hollow. The most sensational moment comes from the fact that "Barry" wasn´t wearing a condom. In the next chapter, Dunham backtracks with the claim that she´s an "unreliable narrator" and accuses "Barry" of rape: [I]n another essay in this book I describe a sexual encounter with a mustachioed campus Republican as the upsetting but

A recently retired Secret Service agent told MailOnline on Thursday that former director Julia Pierson´s resignation will be welcomed by the agency´s rank-and-file because ´people in the service thought she was a joke from Day One.´ He attributed her swift fall from grace to a cadre of ´p***ed off agents who had had enough´ of feeling disrespected by the service´s first female director. ´Putting her in charge was part of the [Obama] administration´s push to feminize the service after the "hookergate" nightmare,´ the agent said, referring to agents who were fired after patronizing prostitutes during a security-check trip to Colombia

Deadly, irrational, and determined, the intruder snuck across a weakened perimeter. Eluding capture, the intruder was detained only after missteps and close calls. The spin began soon after the threat was isolated. Information was selectively leaked. Half-truths and untruths were uttered. Responsibility was avoided; privileges and credentials asserted; authority reasserted. Trust us. Remain calm. Don’t panic. This is the template of recent events. A mental case jumps the White House fence. He makes it to the East Room before he’s tackled by an off-duty Secret Service agent. Initial statements turn out to be misleading or false. President Obama was at Northwestern University on Thursday to deliver an economic speech that, he and his team hoped, would lay out the case for why the public is better off today than they were six years ago -- even if they didn´t feel it in their everday lives. Instead, Obama just gave every Republican ad-maker in the country more fodder for negative ads linking Democratic candidates to him. Here are the four sentences that will draw all of the attention (they come more than two thirds of the way through the speech): "I am not on the ballot this

It’s the “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes.” A New York appeals court next week will consider whether chimps should have the same rights as human beings. The extraordinary proceeding is the result of a lengthy battle by animal-rights activists who argue that animals with human qualities — including chimps — are entitled to human protections, including freedom from captivity. Steven Wise, part of the Nonhuman Rights Project, which is leading the effort, will have to convince a panel of Albany appellate judges that a chimp name Tommy is a “legal person” to get him moved from a cage

A presidential defeat isn’t an easy thing to bounce back from. And Mitt Romney did it twice. So it was understandable that after he lost the presidential race in 2012, he was adamant about closing the door to the possibility of a third campaign. But recently, speculation is whirling that Romney may not be so adamant anymore. When asked if he was running in a New York Times interview published earlier this week, Romney said : “I have nothing to add to the story. We’ve got a lot of people looking at the race,” he said. “We’ll see what happens.” That response, which

Meghan McCain joined the dog pile on the Secret Service this week, saying she’s had “nothing but horrible experiences" with the agency and likening the agents to “glorified mall cops.” The 29-year-old author and television personality, who is also the daughter of former GOP presidential candidate Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), opened up on Pivot’s “TakePart Live” about some of her interactions with the Secret Service. "I have nothing but horrible experiences with the Secret Service,” McCain said. “One of my friends called them glorified mall cops and I don´t think that´s terribly far off. I found them cliquey. WASHINGTON — Representative Elijah E. Cummings of Maryland was at the grocery store the other day when he ran into an elderly black woman who expressed growing concern about President Obama’s safety. Why, she asked, wasn’t he being better protected by his Secret Service agents? The furor that led to this week’s resignation of the director of the Secret Service resonated deeply among blacks, outraged that those supposed to be guarding the first black president were somehow falling down on the job — and suspicious even without evidence that it may be deliberate. “It is something that is widespread in

ATLANTA — Texas, America’s second-most populous state behind California, saw 13 of its last abortion clinics turn away women on Friday, after a federal appeals court upheld a law that practically guarantees that only a handful of clinics will remain open in the state. The strictest-of-its-kind Texas law requires abortion providers to build hospital-grade facilities and obtain sometimes impossible-to-get hospital admitting privileges. After signed into law last year by Gov. Rick Perry (R), the law forced most of the 41 clinics operating to close. Thursday’s ruling wiped out a brief victory this summer for abortion rights proponents,

Go to a grocery store in California and buy all the milk, eggs and vegetables you want. But there’s one thing you won’t find at the checkout line, beginning July 1, 2015: Plastic bags to carry your stuff home. Gov. Jerry Brown (D) on Tuesday signed into law a ban on single-use plastic bags, making California the first state to prohibit stores from using the ubiquitous carry-alls. Shoppers will be charged 10 cents for every paper bag and heavy-duty plastic bag they use. “This bill is a step in the right direction,” Brown said in a press release announcing his approval. “It

The hawkish Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina says he is thinking about running for president in 2016. In an interview with Stephen Hayes of the Weekly Standard, the senator, running for re-election to the Senate this year, said: “If I get through my general election, if nobody steps up in the presidential mix, if nobody’s out there talking — me and McCain have been talking — I may just jump in to get to make these arguments,” Graham said. Graham, 59, also dismissed Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, 43, as a presidential candidate, saying he is too young. “He’s a good
