A single beam pierces the sky
as the lights go out across Britain:
Tributes to the fallen a century
since World War One was declared

Daily Mail (UK), by Richard Spillett & Mark Duell

Original Article

Posted By:JoniTx, 8/4/2014 9:14:52 PM

The London Eye, 10 Downing Street and the Houses of Parliament were among Britain´s landmarks which turned out their lights for an hour at 10pm last night to remember those who died in the First World War. Homes, businesses and public buildings across the UK were asked to leave on a single light or candle to commemorate the moment then-prime minister Herbert Asquith declared Britain had entered the First World War at 11pm on August 4, 1914. Buildings around the country yesterday took part in the ´hour of reflection´ between 10pm and 11pm, leaving just a light illuminating a window.

One years ago today in 1914 was the date that the British Empire entered the First World War. The United States did not enter the first World War until 1917.

World War 1 began a week before Britain entered. Austria first declared war on Serbia in response to the assassination of Austria´s Archduke Ferdinand by the Bosnian Serb student Gavrilo Princip. Russia came to the aid of the Serbs and then France, Germany and Britain joined.

The commemorations in Britain were amazing.

#1, I looked at most of the reports and didn´t see a mention of the US Ambassador to the Court of St. James´s. That´s not to say he wasn´t there but if he was, he was keeping a low profile. A modest gesture from Obama would have been nice but it wasn´t expected.

I was impressed by the photos of the Queen sitting in a modest little Scottish kirk and Philip at the small Sandringham church, showing that they mourn the dead from thousands of villages too, not just the cities.

William, Kate and Harry, along with the King and Queen of Belgium, played their roles well. Couple that with the sight of Charles and the Rottweiler at the Big Church (Westminster Abbey) with Camilla extinguishing her candle to signal the lights going out, indicates the Queen is sending a strong signal, besides remembering the more humble dead. Watch for Charles to take over many more of the major duties.

My Grandfather was a Sargent in Kitchener´s army in WWI. Some 50 years after the war he told me about seeing "young lads being gassed" and how many died and how terrible the death was and he broke down crying. General Sherman was right "War is hell."

Bill, Hillary and Chelsea Clinton’s international foundation, in the spotlight this month for hosting the annual Clinton Global Initiative in New York, back two groups that operate a massive international abortion business, including one that heralded its 4,000 abortions in a 2013 annual report. Clinton Foundation documents show that it supports two groups that provide abortion services and supplies in Africa, India and Asia — Pathfinder International and Population Services International. The foundation, which publicly focuses on help for AIDS in Africa, climate change and support for girls, is being scrutinized as Hillary Clinton readies a likely 2016 presidential bid.

Oklahoma got a dose of peace yesterday, when Alton Nolen, apparently a Muslim convert, beheaded a co-worker at the food company where he worked. He attacked a second woman and would have killed her too, except that the company’s COO has a gun and knows how to use it. This could actually be a case of workplace violence, as the attack occurred immediately after Alton had been fired. (For what, has not been reported.) Nolen had a colorful criminal record, which makes one wonder how he got a job at all when millions are unemployed. Paul has written about the

Scandal: The attorney general who oversaw the administration´s Fast and Furious gun-walking operation into Mexico resigns right after a federal court denies a DOJ request to delay releasing Fast And Furious documents. Eric Holder´s resignation as attorney general, like anything that occurs in the Obama administration, raises questions of timing. Pundits ask why now, with some suggesting President Obama is getting a two-fer — ginning up his base with tributes to the first African-American AG before the midterms while starting the nomination and confirmation process before a possible Republican takeover of the Senate in November. President Obama ordered airstrikes this week in Syria, in part to take out a supposedly imminent threat from the Khorasan group. This group is linked to al-Qaeda, and Jonathan Karl asked White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest today how the White House can then say core al-Qaeda is decimated. Karl asked if the White House wants to “revise and extend” that claim about core al-Qaeda. Earnest said the statement is still accurate. Karl challenged him and pointed out they’re obviously dangerous enough to strike because of an imminent attack. Earnest shot back that al-Qaeda was so decimated, they fled to

Even though Republicans may take back the Senate by running against amnesty, former Florida Governor Jeb Bush pushed amnesty legislation while stumping for North Carolina Republican Senate candidate Thom Tillis on Wednesday. And even though a recent Gallup poll found that illegal immigration is now the top concern among Republicans, Bush said that if immigration reform is "framed in that way, I don’t think there’s a big debate in the Republican Party about the need to do this."

Of all the malfeasances of William Jefferson Clinton the one that would have most justified a removal from office was not the Monica hijinks, even with the attendant lying under oath and absurd parsings of the word “is,” but the pardoning of Marc Rich — the billionaire international commodities trader and mammoth contributor to, er, Clinton.
