Mystery Ebola virus serum
manufactured by San Diego firm

Los Angeles Times, by Monte Morin

Original Article

An experimental serum given to Christian aid workers infected with the deadly Ebola virus was manufactured by a San Diego pharmaceutical firm using plants, the company and U.S. health authorities disclosed Monday. As Dr. Kent Brantly fights for his life in a special containment unit at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta, and missionary Nancy Writebol prepares to be evacuated from Liberia on Tuesday, details began to emerge about a mysterious treatment they were given shortly after they became infected. The drug, which was produced by Mapp Biopharmaceutical Inc., is called ZMapp and has not been evaluated for safety in humans, according

From plants???? I´m calling bogus on this claim. One could possibly use the B cells from the spleen of a rabbit inoculated with Ebola to create a monoclonal antibody generating cell(heterokarion). But a plant? Not buying it.

My guess? This whole affair is a total lie concocted by Smidgeon to provide a plausible cover for Ebola outbreaks that could occur as the result of our southern border being wide open.

#1 I hadn´t heard of it either but go ahead and google for it, it´s not even that new:

http://news.wustl.edu/news/Pages/20188.aspx

I knew that people had been experimenting with biotech-based techniques much, much better than the old flu vaccines made from eggs and taking six months, but to grow them on plants, that´s great!

I guess you could do it either or both of two ways, either put the antigen on the plant and make that a vaccine, or put the *antibody* in the plant and make a direct treatment!

Remarkable science, if it really works, and maybe about time.

#1, you could possibly be right in that assumption. The BP just caught 70+ attempted to come into the country. Dear Jesus our country has never had a pResident who hates us so much. How can minnie the moochie possibly live with the creature; not to mention their two girls growing under that roof. Like everything in the past, the vaccine will only be for the elites in DC not the peons in fly over country. The death panels at the o-care facility will be working overtime on this one...at our expense!

It was characterized in one article as a "biologic"..

FTA:

The drug is a cocktail of three "humanized" monoclonal antibodies that are manufactured in a group of fragrant plants or bushes known by the genus name Nicotiana.

Monoclonal antibodies fight viral invaders by locking onto antigens - projections on the surface of a virus that are used to cling to and then enter target cells in the body.

In the case of the Ebola virus, these antigens project like spikes from the virus´ long, spaghetti-like body.

Once these antigens lock onto the surface of a cell, the virus enters and uses the host cell´s machinery to begin mass-producing copies of itself. Antibodies, which can be produced by the immune system or administered as a drug, thwart the ability of antigens to lock onto target cells.

This is the serum that was sent to Dr. Brantley and the nurse who had contracted ebola.

This company contacted Samaritan´s Purse, the organization the afflicted doctor and nurse work for, and offered the serum. Samaritan´s Purse is headed by Franklin Graham, Billy Graham´s eldest son.

Perhaps some posters have insider information contrary to this?

As for "googling for it", what is it about "secret" that is not understood?

Re #2, I just went to that link. Yes, in general terms, that is what this serum seems to be about. My comment in #4 was about this particular serum.

There is much that we don´t understand. Much that is beyond our paygrade. Research that has been going on and ocntinues to go on, off the grid and out of the news.

If we let our political cynicism close our minds to this we become like those in olden times who believed the world was flat.

PS. It should be noted that this serum is a treatment for those infected with the virus, not a vaccine.

From the fascinating article linked in #2,

Plants normally do not make antibodies, but, in 1989, scientists developed a technique to genetically alter a tobacco plant so it would produce monoclonal antibodies. Proponents of the new technique noted that it had the potential to make antibodies much more affordable. In addition, plants do not carry viruses that can infect humans.

Researchers had to adjust the West Nile virus antibody to adapt it for production in Nicotiana benthamiana, a relative of tobacco.

This is the plant the San Diego company has been using. Tobacco. Whoda thunk it?

#6, if you do google "nicotiana" and "antibody" you get a raft of journal articles and other links. It´s really not that obscure, of course specific product information is probably still proprietary, but there might even be a patent application to give you every molecular detail, if you want it.

It´s possible the dumb and lazy MSM will get after it in a day or six, science usually takes them a while, and getting it right even longer.

Dr. Marc Siegel on Fox was still going with the "serum from mice" story. Apparently didn´t get the memo on this serum, which IS the one that was sent to the two American victims in Africa and is believed to improved Dr. Brantley.

Those involved with these cases are guarded, however, because sometimes a bounce can occur, followed by a decline.

Students of that age would also be taught that “touching and rubbing one’s genitals to feel good is called masturbation,” the newspaper said.
