On Thursday night, July 24, Xinran Ji was walking home from his study group meeting, four blocks from USC, where he was a graduate student in engineering. According to police, four teenagers, three boys and a girl, beat 24-year-old Ji with a baseball bat and a wrench. No reason. No connection. Ji managed to struggle back to his apartment, where his roommate found him the next morning, dead in a pool of blood that police traced back to the spot where he was attacked. I’ve taught at USC for 24 years. Two years after I arrived, the riots happened all

Absolutely, OP. I was surprised when I read the author´s name. But maybe this shook Susan out of her liberal/progressive reverie about wonderful, misunderstood children of color.

What surprised me was that these were Latinos; I immediately assumed they would be black in light of the Knock-Out game and historically who plays it. I know, that´s profiling....and common sense.

Susan Estrich is one of those to whom I would have said, "If you liked Clinton (and she did), you´re gonna love Obama." Maybe there´s hope yet.

And for Kirsten Powers, another one of the liberal toadies: How many Alberto Ochoas, Alejandra Guerreros, and other "minors" that we need to take in have been jet-ski´d across the Rio Grande so far this week?

PARIS — France´s summer is fast becoming a memory, and so is one of its iconic beach sights: the topless woman. As few as 2 percent of French women under 35 now say they want to bare their breasts, according to an Elle magazine poll this summer. It´s a far cry from the once-ubiquitous scenes of semi-nudity on the French Riviera, epitomized by 1960s blond bombshell Brigitte Bardot. "It´s seen as vulgar. People are more prudish these days," explains 60-year old Muriel Trazie, keeping her breasts out of the public eye while sunning herself on Paris Plages, the French capital´s summer beach. Sandra

For a while now, Mexicans have been wondering why there are no records indicating that President Enrique Peña Nieto graduated from college. Citizens executed their right to information last year, asking the Federal Institution of Access to Information (Instituto Federal de Acceso a la Información Pública, IFAI), to confirm the information stated on ´The Constitutional President of Mexico´ website: “He holds a BA in Law from the Universidad Panamericana and a MA in Business Administration from the Instituto Tecnológico de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey (ITESM).” After the IFAI’s investigation, the institution stated that all records indicating that the President had

Legal immigration is a vital and necessary resource to enhance our economy and culture. Illegal immigration is an affront to those who follow the law. While Mexico relies on more than $20 billion in annual remittances from Mexican expatriates in the U.S., illegal immigration continues to cost Los Angeles County taxpayers alone nearly $2 billion a year and siphons resources away from vital municipal services for legal immigrants and county residents. Our healthcare delivery system has become the HMO for the world, and our education system is failing. In public safety, 25 percent of our county jail inmates are illegal – and the

A bomb exploded next to an underground train station in the Chilean capital of Santiago on Monday afternoon, wounding at least 10 people, and the government said it bore the signs of "a terrorist" act. The blast occurred at lunchtime in a fast-food restaurant in a small shopping and eating area next to the Escuela Militar metro station in the affluent residential and shopping neighborhood of Las Condes. Politics: Chuck Todd made Barack Obama squirm on "Meet the Press" Sunday, asking the president what he´d say to illegal aliens facing deportation as a result of his decision to delay amnesty. How about "Hasta la vista"? The president tried hard to convince the new host of NBC´s Sunday morning talk show that amnesty was merely a matter of making sure "all the t´s are crossed." Sounds good, but then he finally admitted that public polls signal a disaster for Senate Democrats in November if he issues an executive order granting amnesty for up to half the 12 million illegal immigrants in

Presidents give a lot of speeches, and most of them don’t mean very much. They “urge,” they “call on,” and they “challenge”—and, for the most part, their messages bounce off their intended audiences. Congress doesn’t fund the program or balance the budget; the American people carry on wasting energy and dropping out of school. But there are occasions when presidential words are not mere puffs of breath and waves of sound—and today was one of those occasions. Ever since Vladimir Putin launched his war on Ukraine, the question has been whether the United States would really act to defend its new

Estonia´s foreign ministry has summoned the Russian ambassador over what it calls the abduction of an Estonian security official by "unidentified individuals from Russia" on the border. A ministry statement said the incident had taken place inside Estonia on Friday, near Luhamaa border checkpoint. The missing Estonian official works for the Estonian Internal Security Service. Russia says it detained an Estonian security official on a "spying operation" on Russian territory. The head of Estonia´s security police said it was ruling out any "political motive" for now. However, the foreign ministry in Tallinn called it "a very disturbing incident". It comes amid heightened tension with Russia.

Speaking at an event on business taxes at the Urban Institute in Washington, Lew placed the responsibility on Congress to address so-called tax inversions, but said that the administration was prepared to step in if lawmakers don´t move quickly enough. Inversions are tax maneuvers in which corporations buy firms in low-tax countries in order to place their headquarters in that country. Such deals have grown in number in recent months, with
