Ebola survivor Saa Sabas tells
how he beat the disease doctors
fear could be worldwide killer

Meet the lucky man who survived Ebola — the deadly disease doctors fear could be a worldwide killer. Saa Sabas contracted the virus — which has claimed more than 800 lives this year across three countries — while caring for his sick father. The father-of-two’s body temperature soared close to 40 degrees. Aside from the fever, other symptoms included diarrhoea and vomiting. Fortunately the disease was caught early and the pharmacy worker from southern Guinea in West Africa has joined only a small handful of people to survive. (Snip) “In the beginning I had really bad diarrhoea and hiccups, but with the treatment

Comments:
I don´t believe that catching it earlier means more than quarantining him until one sees if he lives or dies. It´s the "diarrhea and hiccups" as symptoms in the beginning that interests me (besides increasing fever).

Catching it early makes it possible to treat the symptoms which end up seriously dehydrating the body - sweating, diarrhea, vomiting - before a patient is so debilitated that organs begin to fail.

I imaginemost know that the temperature in the intro is Celsius. To us that would be 104F, an extremely high temp for an adult.

Has he started having dreams about an old woman with a guitar on a porch yet?

(For those not familiar, I´m referring to Stephen King´s epic "The Stand," which is an excellent good versus evil story with strong Christian theme, believe it or not.)

Alert as man jumps fence at White House

A man jumped the perimeter fence of the White House on Thursday, jangling nerves on the 13th anniversary of the September 11 attacks. Witnesses said he was quickly apprehended by two armed Secret Service officers who had scrambled to intercept him. The White House complex, as is standard procedure in such incidents — which are common — was locked down and people were prevented from entering and leaving the grounds. US President Barack Obama was not at home at the time because he was taking part in an event elsewhere in Washington to mark the anniversary of the 2001 attacks.

Spacecraft “selfies” are always a treat and this one is doubly awesome: taken by the Philae lander piggybacked onto ESA’s Rosetta, it shows one of the spacecraft’s 14-meter-long (46-foot) solar arrays glinting with reflected sunlight while off in the distance is the double-lobed nucleus of Comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko! Rosetta has been circling the comet for over a month now and returning some truly amazing images, but leave it to little Philae to put it all into perspective. Such a show-stealer! (Not that we mind, of course.) The image above was acquired with Philae’s CIVA (Comet nucleus Infrared and Visible

Allen Park, Mich. - A mystery Drone is the talk of Allen Park, as a family there watched the flying device land in their backyard. The operator--nowhere to be found. "We freaked out," said homeowner Roman Urista. He and his family were sitting in the backyard around a fire recently, when the Drone hovered overhead, lights on and propellers roaring. It crash landed in the family´s yard, still buzzing. "It didn´t look like a hobby toy to me," said Urista. The Drone, valued at around $500, was equipped with an onboard camera. The family was scared to go near the Drone, and once they saw the recording device, they called police.

The leader of the Catholic League said Thursday his group will not march in the 2015 St. Patrick’s Day parade in New York City due to a broken promise involving other marchers. “They not only told me one thing and did another, they decided to include a gay group that is neither Catholic nor Irish while stiffing pro-life Catholics,” said Bill Donohue, president of the Catholic League. After 20 years of marching in New York, the Catholic League “will not do so in 2015,” he said. Washington - U.S. special operations forces will be needed on the ground in Syria to make the expanded air war President Obama has ordered there more effective, a senior Air Force commander told USA Today. The spy planes flying missions over Iraq and Syria can develop a list of potential Islamic State targets, said the commander who spoke on condition of anonymity to describe what the war might look like. But it´s "absolutely crucial that pilots are talking to an American on the ground" who can verify that the target is legitimate. Obama has said he is not sending traditional ground combat troops to Iraq or Syria.

Washington - NASA´s $2.5 billion Curiosity rover has reached the base of the Martian mountain it aims to explore and should start drilling rocks there soon, US space agency scientists said Thursday. They also defended the robotic vehicle´s work so far, after a review panel in July criticized the mission and said it was lacking focus. The biggest Mars rover ever made landed on the Red Planet in August 2012 after a dramatic touchdown, with the goal of exploring the terrain for traces that life may once have existed. John Lightfoot, who manages the FBI’s counterterrorism efforts in the San Francisco Bay Area, spoke at a utility industry conference in San Francisco on Tuesday and reiterated the bureau’s position that there is no indication the April 2013 shooting of a Pacific Gas & Electric Co. power station outside San Jose was an act of terrorism, the San Francisco Chronicle reported. A giant fossil, unearthed in the Sahara desert, has given scientists an unprecedented look at the largest-known carnivorous dinosaur: Spinosaurus. The 95-million-year-old remains confirm a long-held theory: that this is the first-known swimming dinosaur. Scientists say the beast had flat, paddle-like feet and nostrils on top of its crocodilian head that would allow it to submerge with ease. Lead author Nizar Ibrahim, a palaeontologist from the University of Chicago, said: "It is a really bizarre dinosaur - there´s no real blueprint for it. "It has a long neck, a long trunk, a long tail, a 7ft (2m) sail on its back and a snout like a crocodile.

The House on Thursday took another swipe at Obamacare ahead of the midterm elections, with about two dozen Democrats joining the Republican majority to pass a bill that lets insurers continue to offer employer health plans that do not comply with the law’s coverage standards. President Obama has threatened to veto the measure, which passed the chamber 247-167 but will surely die in the Democrat-controlled Senate. Republicans said the bill was necessary to broaden consumer choice and help Mr. Obama keep his promise that “if you like your health plan, you can keep it,” while many Democrats complained it would

WASHINGTON--US President Barack Obama will tell the American people on Wednesday night that he plans to order strikes against Islamic State forces in both Syria and Iraq until the group is ultimately destroyed. As we suspected, President Obama tried in his Wednesday-night speech to make it sound like he was doing something new when he, in fact, he is not. Moreover, in describing his response, he made plain that he doesn’t take the threat to the homeland seriously. For a threat his advisers say is greater than that posed by al-Qaeda after 2001, he proposed measures suitable for Yemen and Somalia. No, really — that’s the plan. For starters, the president doesn’t believe the Islamic State is a current threat to the U.S.: “So ISIL poses a threat to the people of Iraq

Rarely has a president faced a greater challenge in establishing his credibility for a new foreign-policy move than Barack Obama did in his nationally televised speech tonight. A CNN poll earlier this week found that just 30 percent of voters thought Obama had presented a clear plan for fighting the Islamic State. While Obama now pledges to ask Congress to train and aid Syrian rebels who would fight the group, voters remember that he backed similar plans in Syria in 2013, when his advisers saw Syrian president Bashar Assad as the major threat. Throughout his presidency, President Obama has emphasized one point while talking about Islamist extremists: They are not practicing Islam, he has said, they are perverting it. He took that a step further Wednesday night. While announcing that he´s expanding the campaign against the Islamic State extremist group into Syria, Obama said flatly that this group, which is trying to install a caliphate in the Middle East, "is not Islamic." He didn´t say they are perverting their religion; he said they´re not even part of that religion. President Obama just announced that he is bringing a counter-terrorism strategy to an insurgency fight. He was at pains to repeat the phrase “counter-terror” four times in a short speech. Noting that ISIL is not a state (partly because the international community thankfully does not recognize it), he declared, “ISIL is a terrorist organization, pure and simple. And it has no vision other than the slaughter of all who stand in its way.” Neither of those sentences, unfortunately, is true. Obama did not describe his authorization of direct military action to defeat the Islamic State terror group as a conventional war.
