MOUNT BALDY, Calif. — About 2,500 people were stranded after thunderstorms caused mountain mudslides in Southern California, while one person was found dead in a flooded creek, authorities said. A body was found Sunday in a car that was swept into the rain-swollen water course in Mount Baldy and overturned, San Bernardino County Fire spokesman Chris Prater said. No other details were provided. Further east, flash floods Sunday brought thick debris flows that cut off access to two towns. About 1,500 residents of Oak Glen, and another 1,000 residents of Forest Falls in the San Bernardino Mountains were unable to get out

Federal contractors vow to
fight Obama executive order

Business interests are vowing to fight President Obama’s executive order imposing new restrictions on companies who want to do business with the federal government. Obama announced the action this week, ordering up new regulations that would require firms seeking federal contracts to disclose labor law violations and create new compliance advisors at agencies to oversee decisions about which firms get the work. But contractors, already facing executive orders requiring them to pay a higher minimum wage and subjecting them to additional anti-discrimination rules, say the president went too far. “We are concerned these sweeping changes threaten the due process rights of federal contractors

The IDF has destroyed Hamas’s flagship terrorism project: its network of tunnels that snuck into Israel. Hamas spent five years preparing this strategic threat; the IDF wrecked 31 tunnels in two weeks. By Sunday, all of the tunnels that the IDF discovered during the offensive, or knew about before the war, will be destroyed. It is assumed that there are a few tunnels that the army has yet to identify. Many of the underground passages were designed to send heavily armed murder squads into Israeli communities and to attack army positions from the rear. They were filled with weapons, explosives and

Obama’s FBI to hire firm to rate ‘positive

The FBI is hiring a contractor to grade news stories about the agency as “positive” “neutral” or “negative,” but the agency won’t say why officials need the information or what they plan to do with it. FBI officials wouldn’t even reveal how they will go about assigning the grades, which were laid out in a recent contract solicitation. The contract tells potential bidders to “use their judgment” in scoring news coverage as part of a new “daily news briefing” service the agency is seeking as part of a contract that could last up to five years.

Islamic militants seize Benghazi
as U.S. evacuates Libya

TRIPOLI, Libya — Fighting in Libya escalated Thursday as Islamic militias claimed to control the country’s second-largest city, Benghazi, while foreigners and U.N. workers continued their exodus in what increasingly is looking like a full-blown civil war. The Islamic hard-liners’ announcement in Benghazi marked a defeat for the forces of renegade Gen. Khalifa Hifter, who for months has pursued a self-declared campaign to stamp out armed militant groups. Once firmly in control of the eastern port city, Gen. Hifter’s troops now appear to hold only the airport on Benghazi’s outskirts.

WASHINGTON — When Moner Mohammad Abusalha drove a truck packed with explosives into a restaurant in northern Syria in May, American authorities conceded that they knew little about how a young man who grew up a basketball-obsessed teenager in a Florida gated community had become a suicide bomber. And they have never publicly acknowledged the startling discovery they made weeks into their investigation: that after receiving training by an extremist group in Syria, Mr. Abusalha had returned to the United States for several months before leaving the country for the last time. Mr. Abusalha, 22, chose to carry out his attack in

Iraq´s Christians are begging the world for help. Is anybody listening? Since capturing the country´s second largest city of Mosul in early June, the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) has ordered Christians to convert to Islam, pay jizya taxes levied on non-Muslims, or die. The extremist Sunni group is also persecuting and murdering Turkmen and Shabaks, both Muslim religious minorities. Human rights lawyer Nina Shea described the horror in Mosul to me: "(ISIS) took the Christians´ houses, took the cars they were driving to leave. They took all their money. There’s something about Justin Bieber that grates. Whether he’s abandoning his pet monkey at German customs, getting charged with DUI for racing on Miami beach or simply repeating, “Guess what? I don’t recall,” in the most annoying and brattish fashion possible to imagine during depositions, it is hard for any but the truest of Beliebers to have anything less than an allergic reaction to the baby-faced “Baby” singer. So imagine how much worse it must be if you suspected the not-so-cute Canadian of cuckolding you? I think we can

Dems fear a debacle on turnout
The Hill, by Alexandra Jaffe    Original Article

Record-low primary election turnout is threatening to magnify Democratic midterm worries. Both parties have made their “get out the vote” programs a top priority for November, investing millions in building bigger ground operations earlier than ever before. The challenge is most dire for Democrats, who are defending a fragile six-seat Senate majority that relies on a handful of races in hostile, GOP-leaning territory — and trying to pick up House seats in a difficult year, politically. Their push this week to raise the alarm — and campaign cash — over the GOP lawsuit against President Obama and to stoke fears of impeachment

Vulnerables balk at Obama action

Democratic senators facing tough reelections want to put the brakes on President Obama’s plan to reform the nation’s immigration enforcement system through executive action. Two of the Senate’s most vulnerable incumbents, Sens. Mark Pryor (D-Ark.) and Kay Hagan (D-N.C.), say Obama should not act unilaterally to reduce deportations, arguing it’s Congress’s job to change the law. While the Democratic-led Senate has passed a bipartisan bill, the Republican-controlled House will not. That poses a dilemma for Obama. Slowing or halting deportations of otherwise law-abiding residents who came to the country illegally could produce a backlash in red states where Obama has low approval

The Obama administration is concealing key details about its response to the surge of unaccompanied children illegally crossing the southern border, including where the unaccompanied minors are being sheltered and the circumstances under which some are set free inside the U.S. Lawmakers on Capitol Hill say the lack of information has handicapped their push to pass legislation to gain a handle on the surge — a debate taking place this week in both chambers. Former Massachusetts Rep. Barney Frank questioned President Obama’s honesty regarding the rollout of Obamacare in a recent interview. He told The Huffington Post on Friday that he was shocked at the mishandling of the new health care law. “The rollout was so bad, and I was appalled—I don’t understand how the president could have sat there and not been checking on that on a weekly basis,” the former Democratic congressman told the website. “But frankly, he should never have said as much as he did, that if you like your current health care plan, you can keep it. That wasn’t true. And you shouldn’t lie to people. And they just lied to people,”

White House Senior Adviser Valerie Jarrett says Israeli strikes near civilian havens in Gaza were indefensible. "This is why the cease-fire is so important," Jarrett said in an interview aired Sunday on CBS´ "Face the Nation." "It´s a devastating situation. Israel absolutely has the right to defend itself, and we are Israel´s staunchest ally. But you also can´t condone the killing of all of these innocent children." President Barack Obama, she said, was concerned and frustrated by the ongoing violence despite efforts by Secretary of State John Kerry to broker a cease-fire between Israel and Hamas. Someone we liked lost a primary. Someone we didn’t won. Some piece of legislation we hate passed; some other piece we liked did not. The events of the past few weeks on America’s southern border bring into clearer focus the Obama pledge to fundamentally transform America. By opening our borders to illegal immigrants, and pardoning those illegals already here as he plans through executive order, Obama will create millions of new citizens within a few years to help him transform America into a multicultural vacationland for the world’s footloose homeless with free food, housing, education, entertainment, and healthcare as drawing cards.

The BBC has enraged Muslim staff after holding a hog roast to celebrate the Commonwealth Games - under the windows of the Arabic TV service. An entire pig was spit-roasted in the courtyard of New Broadcasting House, central London, with wafts of meat drifting up to the predominantly Muslim office. Staff in the department whose religion bans them from eating pork blasted the ´horror´ at spotting the carcass on their lunch break. The event on Friday, celebrating the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, was held just days after the close of Ramadan, a month of fasting for Muslims for spiritual reflection.

Nancy Pelosi then crept up on Marino and began taunting him. Rep. Nita Lowey, D-N.Y., said it best: “What is she

(Snip) Russia is the world´s third-largest oil producer and second-largest natural gas producer. Europe relies heavily on Russian energy exports, complicating the West´s response to the Ukraine crisis. Obama downplayed Moscow´s role in the world, dismissing President Vladimir Putin as a leader causing short-term trouble for political gain that will hurt Russia in the long term.

Something rather dangerous is happening in American politics right now, all the more so for being taken for granted by many of the people watching it unfold. I do not mean the confusion of House Republicans, or the general gridlock in Congress, which are impeding legislative action on the child migrant crisis (among other matters). Incompetence and gridlock are significant problems, indeed severe ones, but they’re happening within the context of a constitutional system that allows for — and can survive — congressional inaction. What is different — more cynical and more destructive — is the course President Obama is
