There’s never an easy time to be a supporter of Israel, but in the last few weeks it has been harder than ever. But one thing never changes: The other side always comes down to challenging Israel’s right to exist. Yes, these days you have to deal with the lopsided casualty totals. With no hint of irony, the media keeps reporting that Israel is losing the media war. How could it win? Most accounts give a number of Israeli military dead, while treating all the losses in Gaza as civilian. When one side’s “warriors” don’t wear uniforms and hide in

The Press controls what we know and how we feel about things by the way it covers or doesn´t cover news. They announced how many of our military were killed every day in Afghanistan and Iraq during the Bush Administration. Even though more lives have been lost during the Obama administration, the Press let the numbers drop the day he took office. They are doing the same in Gaza trying to manipulate how the world feels about Israel. They are deliberately giving a false impression of what is going on in order to control public opinion. Blood is on their hands.

Zalmay Khalilzad, a former U.S. ambassador to Afghanistan and Iraq, is being investigated for money laundering, and several of his wife´s bank accounts have been frozen in connection with the probe. The Justice Department investigation only became public on Sunday, when a blogger found relevant documents in a garbage container used by a state prosecutor´s office in Vienna and posted them online. A day later, Austrian magazine Profil reported on the case. Since then, Austrian courts have instructed employees to be more careful with sensitive information, a court spokeswoman told Bloomberg. The investigation centers on a $1.5 million transfer from Khalilzad´s bank account

America´s incredible shrinking labor force

It came as quite a disappointment last Friday when the Labor Department announced that the U.S. economy created only 142,000 net jobs in August. Even worse, this anemic number came with a downward revision of a combined net 28,000 jobs for the previous two months. Now add to these a third unwelcome piece of news: The U.S. labor force participation rate — that is, the share of working-age Americans who are either working or seeking work — has returned to a multi-decade low of 62.8 percent, down from 65.9 percent before the recession. This number, which has been in a

We can usefully view the Obama administration’s chronic untruthfulness as a sort of multifaceted corporation of untruth, with all sorts of subsidiaries. THE BALD LIES OF POLITICAL EXPEDIENCY Remember the al-Qaeda-is-on-the-run 2012-election talking point? It was mostly a lie. The administration deliberately released to sympathetic journalists only those documents from the so-called Osama bin Laden trove that revealed worry and dissension among the terrorists. Then it nourished essays by pet journalists trumpeting the decline of al-Qaeda. Disturbing memos that confounded that narrative, as Weekly Standard journalist Steven F. Hayes recently noted, were kept back. “On the run” was dropped after the 2012

On September 11 and 12, 2012, in an attack by Islamist militants on the U.S. Diplomatic Compound (unofficially sometimes called a consulate) in Benghazi, Libya, Ambassador J. Christopher Stevens was killed — the first death of an American ambassador by a violent act since 1979. Chris Stevens had earned the admiration and respect of many local Benghazans by making improved relations between Libyans and Americans his calling — one that he was willing to take great risks to accomplish. Also killed that fateful night was the affable State Department computer specialist Sean Smith, known ironically to his friends in the

When presidential boredom is not an option

President Obama’s hair, like the locks of most of the presidents in their second terms, has turned white. He says he doesn’t get enough sleep, but he’s nevertheless energized, not exhausted. Bored is more like it. There should be plenty to keep the president from nodding off. He can see that the world is on fire, and there’s nobody to put out the flames. Immigrant waves continue to pour across the southern border. Vladimir Putin is trying to rebuild the Soviet empire and making it look easy. The economy continues permanent residence in the Dumpster. Obamacare’s defenders are busy declaring victory again. Ezra Klein is touting a new survey of Obamacare benchmark premiums in some regions of the country as evidence that the law is defying the predictions of critics and working to cut costs rather than increase them. But, as Bob Laszewski notes, the truth about Obamacare implementation is far less rosy than the latest round of cheerleading would indicate. For starters, the federal and state websites remain largely a dysfunctional mess, although the media isn’t really covering the story anymore. The supposed “fix” that allowed millions of consumers to sign up with plans on

Who will pick up the pieces? "All politics is local,” the late Speaker of the House Tip O’Neill famously said. How right he was. The world today is suffering from the failure of President Obama to apply a school of law enforcement that happened to originate in O’Neill’s hometown, Boston, and goes by the moniker “broken windows.” The problem, simply stated, is that Obama was deaf to the sound of tinkling glass. The term “broken windows” comes from a 1982 article in the then-Boston-based Atlantic Monthly. Its title was in fact “Broken Windows,” and the authors were two academics, James Q. Wilson

Toward the end of the romantic comedy film The American President, Michael Douglas’s President Shepherd tells the assembled press corps, “Being president of this country is entirely about character.” This 1995 movie was made as a way of rescuing the scurrilous character of Bill Clinton from accusations of womanizing. It’s a pleasant and entertaining film but this line of dialogue, like just about everything else in the picture, is untrue. Being president of this country is somewhat about character — everything in life is — but it is also, very much, about ideas. There have been times over this past summer when

President Obama´s announcement this weekend that he was backtracking on his pledge to reform immigration policies by the end of the summer was quickly attacked by advocates, Republicans, and members of his own party. House Speaker John Boehner said that the decision "smacks of raw politics" -- which is both somewhat ironic and almost certainly true. One problem that the president and Democrats face is that Hispanic voters are much less likely to vote than other demographic groups -- and that´s especially true of voters in the states that will determine whether or not Democrats hold the Senate. RIYADH, Saudi Arabia — As ISIS continues to grow, many commentators have been pointing to Saudi Arabia as the source of the group, and most assume that the United States is the only force that can stop it. Both of these assertions are incorrect. Saudi Arabia is not the source of ISIS, it’s the group’s primary target. ISIS’ core objective is to restore the caliphate (an Islamic empire led by a supreme leader), and because Saudi Arabia is the epicenter of Islam and the custodian of the Two Holy Mosques in Mecca and Medina, ISIS’ road to the caliphate lies through the

In response to a white police officer shooting Michael Brown in Missouri, U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder has announced a broader civil rights probe into the Ferguson Police Department—an action that could lead to a federal takeover of the police. While such probes might not lead to Department of Justice punishment for past local police conduct, it could pave the way for “systemic legal reform going forward,” according to CNN senior legal analyst Jeffrey Toobin. “It’s very serious,” Toobin said of the investigation, before it was formally announced, “because it can lead to a virtual federal takeover of the police,

In light of the results, I’d expect that national Republicans are kicking off the week with an extra spring in their step, as well. In a few days president Obama will unveil his strategy to destroy ISIS to a waiting public. (Snip) However the basic outlines of the strategy itself have emerged from information already available to the press. A Los Angeles Times story suggests that Obama will rely on proxies to fight ISIS at three levels: on the ground, within the region and in the West. Kerry invokes comparisons to the Sunni Awakening, seeking to recall the days when al-Qaeda in Iraq was beaten by George Bush. Obama plans to organize the Sunni Arabs to fight ISIS.

The Obama administration will make a decision on executive action to prevent corporations from leaving the country in the "very near future," Treasury Secretary Jack Lew said Monday morning. Speaking at an event on business taxes at the Urban Institute in Washington, Lew placed the responsibility on Congress to address so-called tax inversions, but said that the administration was prepared to step in if lawmakers don´t move quickly enough. Inversions are tax maneuvers in which corporations buy firms in low-tax countries in order to place their headquarters in that country. Such deals have grown in number in recent months, with
