GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip -- An Israeli airstrike killed a militant leader in the Gaza Strip on Monday, just hours ahead of an expected seven-hour truce announced by Israel that was meant to open a "humanitarian window" for aid. However, the Israeli military said the cease-fire, which was to start at 10 a.m. local time (3 a.m. EDT) would not apply to areas where troops were still operating and where they would respond to any attacks. The Islamic Jihad group - a close ally of Gaza´s militant Palestinian Hamas rulers - said its commander in the northern part of the strip, Daniel

Every article written on this conflict seems to turn into a condemnation of Israel. What the US, UN and all of the other handwringers fail to realize or admit is that if hamas stopped badgering Israel with rockets, explosives and murders, the deaths of civilian Palestinians would stop. Even precision airstrikes are going to have collateral damage, especially when hamas deliberately positions civilians on high value targets.

Get it? Make hamas stop their aggression and Israel will stop the airstrikes. Banky Moon is about as useless as our own ear leader and his sidekick Jon Jon.

Black caliphate flags flap in the open air. Islamic head-choppers wreak bloody havoc around the world. Nearly a dozen commercial airliners disappear in Libya. And America’s immigration and entrance systems remain in shambles. Now is a good time to ask a question I first posed ten summers ago: Where is Adnan Shukrijumah? A decade later, the question is still unanswered. The FBI has yet to track down this homicidal plotter. Have you forgotten? Saudi-born Shukrijumah, billed as the “next Mohammed Atta,” has been a fugitive since the 9/11 terrorist attacks. His father, Gulshair, was a Wahhabi cleric funded by the Saudi government.

When it comes to middle-aged sex and betrayal, women with Kennedy blood in their veins give as good as they get. For years, Maria Shriver, 58, who last year signed on as an NBC “special anchor’’ after a nearly decade-long break from the tube, played the victim. She presented herself as the long-suffering wife of actor-turned-politician-turned-actor Arnold Schwarzenegger, 67. California’s Austrian-born then-governor admitted publicly in 2011 that he fathered a love child, now 16, with the family’s housekeeper, Mildred Baena, now 53 — a boy who was born just five days after Shriver gave birth to his half-brother. Shock! Scandal! Now it seems

Even the Daily Beast can’t keep up the pretense that a government shutdown is in the offing: If you listen to congressional Democrats, they will tell you that we are just days away from a Republican-led government shutdown. Republicans, they would have you believe, would take such a drastic action in retaliation over President Obama’s expected amnesty that would allow millions of undocumented aliens to stay in the United States without fear of deportation. To show their disapproval, the thinking goes, the Republicans would shut the government down in an act of petulance to retaliate against Obama and show their

THE HAGUE — For two years, Pascal Husting’s employer chartered a jet to shuttle him most weeks between his home in Luxembourg and his office in Amsterdam. Such trips are common for executives at major international corporations in Western Europe. But Mr. Husting isn’t working for a corporation. He is the international program director for Greenpeace, the nonprofit that is arguably the world’s most high-profile environmental advocacy organization. Mr. Husting’s weekly commute prompted a chorus of derision from Greenpeace opponents after “Flygate” was revealed in Dutch media this summer.

What is wrong with me? I can’t seem to work up any kind of outrage over news that nude photos of celebrities such as Jennifer Lawrence and Rihanna were pilfered, possibly from iCloud storage accounts and passed around over the Labor Day weekend on sites, including Perez Hilton, Reddit and 4Chan. I maintain now, and have always maintained, that if you are a celebrity and you make a sex tape, you should not expect it to stay private. If you are a celebrity, and you pose nude for digital photos, you should not expect them to stay private. Especially if

On Monday the Washington Free Beacon reported eleven commercial jetliners went missing after Islamist terrorists belonging to “The Masked Men Brigade” took control of the Tripoli airport in August. The Masked Men Brigade is linked to al Qaeda and Ansar al Sharia — the group behind the Benghazi terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2012. The Islamists posted photos of the captured commercial jetliners after they took control of the Tripoli airport. The Islamists climbed on top of the planes in Tripoli to celebrate their victory. On any given weekday in the summer, you will find me walking through fields counting bugs. In fact, it’s my job: I’m an ecologist studying the communities of insects that live in agricultural landscapes. Most days between early June and early September I drive between farms to scout crop pests and the beneficial insects that eat them, changing sticky yellow glue traps and sweeping vegetation with a canvas net. But a single afternoon in August 2006 stands out in memory. Along one of the transects my colleague and I had set up in a cornfield, we noticed that several plants around

Arnold Schwarzenegger may have shagged the maid — but wife Maria Shriver is no June Cleaver. The Kennedy heiress was sleeping with her husband’s lead campaign strategist well before Schwarzenegger’s old affair with their housekeeper came to light, campaign staffers and other sources told The Post. And after years of playing the betrayed wife, Shriver, 58, recently trotted out her longtime lover, Matthew Dowd, 53, as if he were a new fling, sources said. Shriver stepped out with Dowd, now an ABC analyst, for the first time publicly last month at cousin Bobby Kennedy’s wedding. “Maria likes to make it appear that she’s the

WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama and allied leaders will respond to Russian aggression in Ukraine by moving to set up a quick-strike force of several thousand troops at the NATO summit this week in Wales. NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen said Monday the new multinational force would be part of a “Readiness Action Plan (that) responds to Russia’s aggressive behavior,” adding that “it equips the alliance to respond to all security challenges wherever they may arise.” Rasmussen acknowledged that a NATO conference originally scheduled to focus on Afghanistan will now be dominated by the Ukraine crisis when heads of the 28

IRS scandal needs

We have heard the phrase “phony scandals” applied this summer to several important developments in President Obama´s administration. Obama would now love to place in this category even the IRS scandal, in which Lois Lerner´s division of that agency targeted and harassed conservative non-profit groups. Last summer, Obama had called that scandal “inexcusable” and forced the head of the IRS to resign. How times change. This scandal, though without the fatal consequences that attended the mismanagement of the Veterans Administration, is nevertheless egregious and telling about the nature of the executive over which Obama presides. It escalated significantly last month as

The Oxford Dictionaries comes out each winter and give an award to the Word of the Year. Others expand the WoTY concept to include a phrase of the year. Lately, however, I’ve been finding that there’s something missing from this system of honorifics. We need some sort of Deleted Phrase of the Year, letting everyone know that a phrase has simply been beaten to death, jumped the shark and reached the end of the line. And the first phrase we need to do away with is, we need to have a national conversation. When Robin Williams took his own life, we

Barack Obama stands apart from other modern American Presidents in many ways. (snip)the widespread view that he is the coolest President ever. This supernal coolness is not new. In his autobiography, Dreams From My Father, the President wrote that in his teenage years “I tried my best to be cool at all times” (p. 82). However, leaving aside the contradiction inherent in trying to be cool, it is possible that Barack Obama’s teenage experiences may have left him psychologically, and perhaps even neurologically, incapable of performing fundamental tasks of his current position. Much of the appeal of coolness is its

Last Wednesday, at a ceremony to appoint Texas lawyer Shaarik Zafar to be special representative to Muslim communities, Secretary of State John Kerry said it was the United States’ Biblical “responsibility” to “confront climate change,” including to protect “vulnerable Muslim majority counties.” Kerry said Scripture, in particular the Book of Genesis, makes clear it is our “duty” to protect the planet and we should look at Muslim countries “with a sense of stewardship of earth,” adding, “That responsibility comes from God.” And here you thought all along that “Uncle Joe” was the resident crazy in the Obama administration.

Maybe the news that a second American has been beheaded will force President Obama to recognize he has no more compelling priority today than stopping the Islamic State and its bloodletting. In its latest barbarity, ISIS aimed to project American weakness to the world. Just before he beheaded Steven Sotloff, the ISIS executioner explained the butchery this way: I’m back, Obama, and I’m back because of your arrogant foreign policy towards the Islamic State, because of your insistence on continuing your bombings.?.?. Up to 70 veteran USA Today journalists, editors, and others were laid off Wednesday, and reports claim that the newly unemployed were "marched out by security" and within 15 minutes had their email accounts shut off. The layoffs came as no surprise after the Gannett Company followed the lead of many other companies that have already separated and spun off their dying publishing business into separate companies. It was only a few weeks ago that Gannett did the same. USA Today is Gannett´s flagship publication and enjoys the highest circulation of any other American newspaper. The home-cooked meal has long been romanticized, from ’50s-era sitcoms to the work of star food writer Michael Pollan, who once wrote, “far from oppressing them, the work of cooking approached in the proper spirit offered a kind of fulfillment and deserved an intelligent woman’s attention.” In recent years, the home-cooked meal has increasingly been offered up as the solution to our country´s burgeoning nutrition-related health problems of heart disease and diabetes. But while home-cooked meals are typically healthier than restaurant food, sociologists Sarah Bowen, Sinikka Elliott, and Joslyn Brenton from North Carolina State University argue that the stress that
