US Sent Latin Youth Undercover

WASHINGTON -- An Obama administration program secretly dispatched young Latin Americans to Cuba using the cover of health and civic programs to provoke political change, a clandestine operation that put those foreigners in danger even after a U.S. contractor was hauled away to a Cuban jail. Beginning as early as October 2009, a project overseen by the U.S. Agency for International Development sent Venezuelan, Costa Rican and Peruvian young people to Cuba in hopes of ginning up rebellion. The travelers worked undercover, often posing as tourists, and traveled around the island scouting for people they could turn into political activists. In one

I call BS. Why would Obama want to weaken his idealogical amigos?

Sounds like agitprop to sway the Cuban votes ahead of the election.

Columbia, South Carolina -- Before the football game, there was lunch. And before lunch, Rick Perry said a prayer. Perry, a devout evangelical Christian, prayed for the health and safety of the Republicans in the room and their families. He prayed for American troops overseas. And he prayed for President Obama. "We ask you to be with our President, give him wisdom, and open his eyes. In your most holy name. Amen." He paused. "OK, fried chicken." At that, the two-dozen garnet and black-clad South Carolinians made for the barbecue, mac-and-cheese, fried chicken and banana pudding laid out before them

AUSTIN - Sen. Wendy Davis, in her memoir due out next week, discloses the most personal of stories preceding her nationally marked fight against tighter abortion restrictions: a decision she and her then-husband made 17 years ago to end a much-wanted pregnancy. The book, “Forgetting to Be Afraid,” goes on sale to the general public Tuesday. Copies will be available Monday at a Fort Worth book signing by Davis, the Democratic nominee for governor against Republican Attorney General Greg Abbott. Davis, in a copy of the book obtained by the San Antonio Express-News, wrote that her unborn third daughter had an acute

Knowing now how the Bob McDonnell trial ended, it’s worth taking a look back at how it began: with a disgruntled cook who turned incriminating records over to the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Virginia State Police. The Washington Post’s Rosalind S. Helderman and Matt Zapotosky catch up with the former chef (executive chef to you) to the McDonnells at his new home in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Todd Schneider was fired in March 2012 after being accused of stealing food bought by the taxpayers to supply his side catering business. (He maintains that he had worked out a barter system

One of the main reasons that Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid blew up the traditional applicability of the filibuster in the United States Senate was so that President Obama could pack the DC Circuit Court of Appeals with liberal judges, anticipating the need for bias, or at least partisanship, on the bench in order to defend Obamacare from legal challenge. This particular appeals court, officially called the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, is often considered the second-most important court in the country since it handles so many cases related to the regulatory power of

I moved to New York in April of the year The Lovin’ Spoonful hit the charts with “Summer in the City.” By July, I was broke. Three months is no record for Manhattan penury, especially in the red-ink world of unpublished poets, but our financial condition made a big impression on my wife. The rent was due and our daughter was running low on strained carrots. The Help Wanted pages suggested a visit to 16 Christopher Street, the basement office where Edmond Martin (he preferred to be called E.M.) rented a portfolio of charming West Village apartments. More than $725 million was spent by the Army on a high-tech network for tracking supplies and expenses that failed to comply with federal financial reporting rules meant to allow auditors to track spending, according to an inspector general’s report issued Wednesday. The Global Combat Support System-Army, a logistical support system meant to track supplies, spare parts and other equipment, was launched in 1997. In 2003, the program switched from custom software to a web-based commercial software system. About $95 million was spent before the switch was made, according to the report from the Department of Defense IG. As of this February, the

For years, there has been a multipronged attempt to drive conservative speech from the public square. These prongs include misuse of government powers to target conservatives, attempts to keep conservative voices from being heard on mass-media outlets, and redefinition of language in order to taint conservative speech as unacceptable. That first prong, though, the misuse of government power, has become more prevalent during the Obama era with the targeting of conservatives and particularly Tea Party groups by the Internal Revenue Service serving as the most prominent example. We now know, and the Treasury Department’s internal reviews have acknowledged, that the IRS delayed and

The mood before this morning’s jobs report landed with a thud was one of high, almost touching optimism. For example, there was this from Matt Phillips at Quartz: All indications are that this Friday’s US jobs report for August is going to be a very, very big one. Phillips cited: Ted Wieseman, an economic analyst at Morgan Stanley, [who] recently wrote that the ongoing strength in jobless claims through August “is quite impressive, enough so for us to marginally nudge up our August payrolls forecast to 250,000 from 240,000.” Which was wrong, of course, by nearly half. To the downside. And manufacturing was expected to

Finally, some good news out of the White House on the anti-terror front: The administration confirmed that U.S. air power killed the leader of the Al Qaeda franchise in Somalia. Among its virtues, the strike had a clarity that has escaped President Obama in his attempt to figure out what to do about the rampaging barbarians of ISIS since he authorized limited assaults from above to protect the Yazidis from genocide. Saving the Yazidis was purely a humanitarian mission, the White House said early last month. After James Foley was beheaded, Obama recast the mission as one of retaliation. “When people harm Americans anywhere,

Rand Paul this week derided President Obama´s approach to ISIS, then explained what he would do differently if he were president. It turned out, though, that the Republican senator from Kentucky and the president pretty much see eye to eye on the issue. In a Time op-ed, Paul wrote that he would have "acted more decisively and strongly against ISIS" by launching airstrikes, arming the Kurdish rebels, bolstering Israel´s Iron Dome missile defense, and securing the U.S. border. One problem: Obama has already done just that, or most of it, anyway. Obama has ordered more than 125 airstrikes in the past month

WASHINGTON – U.S. officials say a commercial aircraft chartered by the U.S.-led military in Afghanistan was re-routed to Iran, apparently because of a mix-up over its flight plan. The plane was flying from Bagram airfield north of Kabul to Dubai on Friday. The normal flight path goes through Iranian airspace. One official says Iranians radioed the plane´s crew to say they did not have the proper paperwork and to return to Bagram. The pilots said they did not have enough fuel to return so the Iranian authorities told them to land in Iran. A senior State Department official says the issue appears to

Barack Obama stands apart from other modern American Presidents in many ways. (snip)the widespread view that he is the coolest President ever. This supernal coolness is not new. In his autobiography, Dreams From My Father, the President wrote that in his teenage years “I tried my best to be cool at all times” (p. 82). However, leaving aside the contradiction inherent in trying to be cool, it is possible that Barack Obama’s teenage experiences may have left him psychologically, and perhaps even neurologically, incapable of performing fundamental tasks of his current position. The top Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee on Friday said new allegations that U.S. commandos were ordered to “stand down” during the 2012 attack in Benghazi, Libya, aren’t supported by findings from House and Senate investigators. Five commandos who survived the Benghazi attack, which claimed the lives of Ambassador Christopher Stevens and three other Americans, made the allegation in a new book, accusing the CIA station chief of delaying a rescue mission. Rep. Dutch Ruppersberger (D-Md.) said lawmakers never came across evidence indicating the station chief had told his team to “stand down” and abort a

The Internal Revenue Service has lost emails from five more employees who are part of congressional probes into the treatment of conservative groups that applied for tax-exempt status, the tax service disclosed Friday. The tax agency said in June that it could not locate an untold number of emails to and from Lois Lerner, who headed the IRS division that processes applications for tax-exempt status. The revelation set off a new round of investigations and congressional hearings. On Friday, the IRS issued a report to Congress saying the agency also lost emails from five other employees related to the probe,
