This morning´s key headlines from GenerationalDynamics.com. Congress reacts to photos of Assad´s torture victims in Syria. Israel confirms the death of the abducted soldier. Congress reacts to photos of Assad´s torture victims in Syria. The House Foreign Affairs Committee on Thursday viewed a presentation by a defecting forensic photographer from the regime of Syria´s president Bashar al-Assad. This was the same forensic photographer, nicknamed "Caesar," that we wrote about in January. Wearing dark glasses and a hood to hide his identity, he told Congress what he had seen in Damascus. He described maimed bodies, people with eyes gouged out, and

ROME, Italy — When 79-year-old Sister Bernadetta Boggian, of the Xaverian order, called Father Mario Pulcini on Sunday afternoon to tell him that she had just discovered two of her elderly colleagues brutally raped and murdered in their convent in Bujumbura, the capital of Burundi, she had no idea she would face the same fate just nine hours later. Instead, the elderly nun guided Father Pulcini through the carnage, past the pools of blood, first to Sister Lucia Pulici, 82, who was lying on the floor with her throat cut, and then to Sister Olga Raschietti, 75, whose head had

Gov. Cuomo won his Democratic primary fight Tuesday — but not without getting bruised by little-known leftist insurgent Zephyr Teachout’s surprisingly strong showing. With 94 percent of the ballots counted, Teachout had 34.6 percent of the vote to Cuomo’s 61.7 percent — even though she ran a shoestring campaign against a well-financed incumbent who outspent her 10 to 1. And a third candidate on the ballot, Randy Credico, got about 3.7 percent — meaning that almost 40 percent of Dem voters cast their ballots against the gov. Teachout — whom Cuomo tried to vhave booted from the ballot — won

There is a mystery about Congressman Paul Ryan’s new and very good book, “The Way Forward: Renewing the American Dream.” Perhaps there are several mysteries. Mr. Ryan, the chairman of the House Budget Committee and Mitt Romney’s vice presidential running mate, begins by writing at length about the place he has lived all his life, Janesville, a town of 60,000 in southern Wisconsin. It is rural, but it also has industry. Moreover it has Ryans. Sixty-seven of his cousins live nearby. The Ryans have lived there for generations along with other Catholics, Protestants, and presumably citizens oblivious to religion’s call.

This won’t do. The Baltimore Ravens fired running back Ray Rice after a second video surfaced — this one showing him punching his then fiancee, Janay. The NFL also suspended Rice indefinitely so that no other team could sign him. Carson, a former professor and director of pediatric neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore, said that he hoped the league would get some help for Rice. (snip) They only fired Rice because he became an even bigger public relations problem for them? The Ravens had Janay come out and apologize alongside Ray Rice, after the first video surfaced. Imagine a sex scandal centered on a small area, involving decades of abuse, with hundreds of children raped, assaulted and prostituted. Authorities suspected or knew of the crimes but did nothing, preferring to protect the abusers than aid their victims or see justice done. If that city were in, say, Ireland, and the abusers Catholic priests, the U.S. networks would report it immediately and continuously. And rightly so. But move that city to northern England, and make the perpetrators Muslim men? Don’t look to ABC, NBC or CBS for details.

The Obama administration, the CIA, and even some congressional committees—they all said there “was no ´stand down´ order.” But now five men who helped ward off the terrorists that attacked U.S. diplomatic facilities in Benghazi, Libya two years ago say it´s only because they defied such an order that as many as 25 Americans are alive today. “There’s quite a few—the soft-skins, we call them, or the non-shooters,” Kris “Tanto” Paronto, one of the security contractors that fateful evening, said in a phone interview on early Monday afternoon. “They’re all still working. James O’Keefe’s latest video may seem flip at first glance. He suits up a “terrorist” and boats him across Lake Erie into Cleveland, Ohio. But when you consider the fact that there are an estimated 500 British passport holders currently fighting for the IS, along with over 100 Americans and an untold number of Europeans fighting alongside the terrorists, the subject of border security takes on a greater urgency. The fact that this could happen, as O’Keefe films it, is a grave concern.

Arguments for a universal basic income (UBI) — in which everyone without exception would receive an equal stipend — have flourished in policy-centric areas of the internet, including The Week. Advocates of UBI see it as a blunter, more effective means of reducing poverty and shrinking the inequality gap. But even if UBI proponents are right on the merits, Tyler Cowen argues that the politics of the issue are not favorable. Under
