A woman has died after landing at Gatwick airport on a flight from Sierra Leone, one of the countries at the centre of the deadly Ebola outbreak. The 72-year-old was understood to have been “vomiting and sweating” before she collapsed and was taken by ambulance to hospital. She had been travelling on a Gambia Bird flight with 128 passengers on board from Sierra Leone, which has declared a state of emergency after more than 200 people have died in the country from the disease. The plane, which landed at 8.15am on Saturday from Freetown in Sierra Leone after stopping in

She was tested for ebola, found to be negative. Died of natural causes.

They are saying that she tested negative for ebola.

Hope this is true, because it sounds like maybe the Keystone Kops were doing the initial work, transporting her to the hospital before they were sure what it was. Symptoms are also consistent with a heart attack. Giving the medical workers credit, maybe they hooked her up to an EKG and saw it was heart attack and rushed her to the hospital.

Let´s hope that they wasn´t just "Oh, I didn´t think of that. . . ." [deer in the headlights look].

I heard/read a couple of days ago that the ebola test results usually take 2-3 days. but this article seems to indicate that she was tested very shortly after arrival and the test was negative. does anyone know how soon a blood test would show positive/negative??

No direct answers on the testing time, but I can sketch out the various technology options and estimate the testing time of each. Need more info.

I used to manage antiviral and testing antibodies development projects overseas, and learned a bit about the testing types. Some version of ELISA or PCR would probably be used, and ** IF ** there is a prepared rod type of ELISA kit available for ebola (and I have no idea whether this relatively new version of the ELISA lab test has been kitted up for this particular virus), you could probably have results in 5-15 minutes, maybe less, in the field.

Dip a specially made ELISA test rod in the sample, then dip into a series of reagents in a prepared set, in order, and if you get the color predicted - positive. The rod could have multiple test sites built in, so do tests for multiple diseases at one shot. I know the technology exists, but if its available as a field kit for ebola, someone else will have to say. I am checking with experts offline.

PCR can take hours/days, and regular lab ELISA maybe half an hour if the reagents are all ready, hours if not - plus transport time to a lab.

Another possibility is the specific antigen test stick - same exact technology as the drugstore pregnancy tests. Dip and see if there is a colored line. Again - unlikely to be in production for ebola, not nearly enough market to make it cost effective - BUT with enough gov´t $$, anything is possible. So if the gov´t said they wanted them, they can be made. Are they? Don´t know.

Can any first responders out there report on any ebola field test kits that are out there? Maybe only in-lab ELISA is used.

It´s been 13 long years since United Flight 93 nose-dived into a former strip mining field in a forgotten spot of Somerset County. So much has changed since then. The forgotten field is now a solemn place of remembrance for the 40 heroes aboard the hijacked flight, believed headed for Washington,D.C., in what would have been the fourth terrorist´s strike on Sept. 11, 2001. The jetliner barreled into field five miles from Shanksville, Pa., instead. Only those onboard lost their lives. Over the past several weeks, there’s been a plethora of discussion over Obama’s “strategy” vis-à-vis ISIS (aka ISIL), whether he actually had a strategy and, if so, what it might be. Well, he certainly had a strategy for the speech he gave last night. Like an entertainer who opens his act with his biggest number, Obama’s strategy was to open his speech with the most blatant, brazen, bald-faced lie imaginable. It had me livid within the first few minutes of his speech, when he had the colossal gall to state, “First of all, ISIL is not Islamic. No religion condones

Until a few months ago, the part of New York City where crowds will gather on Thursday morning to mark the 13th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks on the United States had been mostly fenced off to the public. This year, for perhaps the first time since the attacks, a sense of normalcy and openness has taken root in the city blocks where two airliners hijacked by militants from al Qaeda crashed into the World Trade Center´s twin towers. Rebuilding efforts at the site, where 2,753 people died, are nearing completion. The area, by turns a smoldering grave and an

Since Barry Goldwater, in accepting the Republicans’ 1964 presidential nomination, said, “Extremism in the defense of liberty is no vice,” Democrats have been decrying Republican “extremism.” Actually, although there is abundant foolishness and unseemliness in U.S. politics, real extremism — measures or movements that menace the Constitution’s architecture of ordered liberty — is rare. This week, however, extremism stained the Senate. Forty-eight members of the Democratic caucus attempted to do something never previously done: Amend the Bill of Rights. They tried to radically shrink First Amendment protection of political speech. They evidently think extremism in defense of the political class’s

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo.— Missouri women seeking abortions will face one of the nation´s most stringent waiting periods, after state lawmakers overrode the governor´s veto to enact a 72-hour delay that includes no exception for cases of rape or incest. The new requirement will take effect 30 days after Wednesday´s vote by the Republican-led Legislature, overruling the veto of Democratic Gov. Jay Nixon. He had denounced the measure as "extreme and disrespectful" toward women. The abortion bill was one of the most prominent Republican victories in a record-setting September session, during which Missouri lawmakers also overrode 47 line-item budget vetoes and

President Obama on Wednesday night entered a new phase of his presidency -- and he did it in a most Obama of ways. First, to what’s changed: He’s announcing a war, not ending one. He’s preparing to act without Congress, almost exactly a year after deferring to the legislative branch on a question of whether to use American military force. The president is rushing to catch up with and soothe an anxious, even frightened, public. He’s doing it while looking to reverse perceptions that he’s been slow to respond to metastasizing crises in the Middle East and beyond. “I can
