If you get tired of mud-slinging in the pigpens and fast-talking from the carnival barkers at the Iowa State Fair, you´ll have plenty of chances this month to take refuge with the politicians. The Des Moines Register´s political soapbox will return to the fair Aug. 7 through 16, with a long list of state and national political figures scheduled to appear. Iowa Republican Gov. Terry Branstad and Democratic challenger Jack Hatch are on the bill. So are Bruce Braley and Joni Ernst, the Democrat and Republican facing off in one of the most heated U.S. Senate races of the year.

U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz bagged three pheasants on a hunt with U.S. Rep. Steve King in northwest Iowa back in October. "I was laughing," the Texas senator said in a sit-down interview with The Des Moines Register, "because every time anyone shot a bird, everyone would call out, ´Good shot, senator.´ I told Steve, ´This is the only hunt I´ve ever been on where I got credited for more birds than I had shells.´" As Cruz touched down in the presidential testing grounds of Iowa again today, he was yet again a hot topic on the national stage. Just like

Following statements from Representative Steve King (R-IA) that President Barack Obama was creating a “constitutional crisis” with his executive actions on immigration that would ultimately leave the House with no choice but impeachment, Fox News Sunday host Chris Wallace asked Representative Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) how the GOP’s impeachment chatter was different than bills filed by the Democrats to impeach George W Bush. “It’s completely different,” Jeffries said. “Then-Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) clearly said impeachment is off the table.” “Basically that’s what [House Speaker] John Boehner (R-OH) said this week, too,” Wallace said.

(Video) CANTON, Ohio -- After delivering an emotionally charged speech that brought both laughter and tears, receiver Andre Reed had one more thing to do to make his Pro Football Hall of Fame induction complete. Turning his back to the crowd at the podium, Reed caught a pass from former Buffalo Bills teammate and fellow Hall of Famer Jim Kelly on the stage at Fawcett Stadium on Saturday night. The two then shared a long, emotional hug. It was a fitting finish for a tandem that set a then-NFL record by hooking up 663 times in Buffalo. And it was

TOLEDO, Ohio - Residents of Ohio´s fourth largest city are now being warned about potential hazards from taking a shower. The Toledo-Lucas County Health Department said late Saturday that, at the urging of the Centers for Disease Control, it is advising that those with liver disease should avoid showering. This applies only to those who get their water service from the city of Toledo´s water treatment plant. The department now also says that those with sensitive skin may want to avoid showering because the water could cause irritation, reports CBS affiliate WTOL in Toledo. A great deal of attention has been focused in recent months on the surge of illegal aliens, particularly unaccompanied alien children (UAC), through the southwest border of the United States. However, a federal Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) fact sheet points to the fact that a large number of male teens have been arriving in exponentially increasing numbers for several years. According to an HHS Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR) fact sheet, “Most [illegal aliens] are over 14 and approximately three quarters of them are boys.” In addition, there has been a steady upward trend in the number

In an echo of 2008 — when Ted and Caroline Kennedy backed upstart Barack Obama over Hillary Rodham Clinton — members of the Kennedy clan have been quietly wooing Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren and encouraging her to throw her hat in the ring, sources tell me. The question of whom to back in the 2016 presidential race has split the Kennedys down the middle. Robert Kennedy’s widow, Ethel, and their eldest son, former US Rep. Joe Kennedy II, favor Warren — the darling of the party’s left-wing base who now sits in Ted Kennedy’s old seat — while Bobby Jr.

Professor Danielle Allen, at the Princeton Institute for Advanced Studies, has proposed a closer reading of the Declaration of Independence in order to prove that the country was intended to be socialist all along. Yes, that’s her thesis, and this woman is on the Board of Trustees and has a MacArthur ´Genius´ Award. On the other hand, she’s a professor of sociology, a field with a penchant for ideology. The Declaration of Independence is a dramatic statement to the world explaining why we broke away from England. But it’s the Constitution – not the Declaration – that defines how the

PHILADELPHIA — Advocates of the Affordable Care Act, focused until now on persuading people to buy health insurance, have moved to a crucial new phase: making sure the eight million Americans who did so understand their often complicated policies and use them properly. The political stakes are high, as support for the health care law will hinge at least partly on whether people have good experiences with their new coverage. Advocates of the law also say teaching the newly insured how to be smart health care consumers could advance the law’s central goal of keeping costs down, such as by

FANCY FARM, Ky. – U.S. Sen. Mitch McConnell and Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes met Saturday for the first time in a year, sparring on the stage at the annual Fancy Farm Picnic in western Kentucky. With the crowd a bit better-behaved than in past years, Democrat Grimes hammered on Republican McConnell, listing a series of her contrasting policy positions and urging the crowd to respond that "Mitch McConnell doesn´t care" on each one. McConnell for his part took shots at Grimes and a series of gaffes she and her campaign have made over the past year, including a

Former Massachusetts Rep. Barney Frank questioned President Obama’s honesty regarding the rollout of Obamacare in a recent interview. He told The Huffington Post on Friday that he was shocked at the mishandling of the new health care law. “The rollout was so bad, and I was appalled—I don’t understand how the president could have sat there and not been checking on that on a weekly basis,” the former Democratic congressman told the website. “But frankly, he should never have said as much as he did, that if you like your current health care plan, you can keep it. That wasn’t true. And you shouldn’t lie to people. And they just lied to people,”

That was the most astonishing moment of today’s galling Obama press conference. President Obama had earlier lectured journalists how to do their jobs, ripped Republicans for doing their jobs, and chided everyone within earshot for not wishing him a happy birthday yet. After that descent into pre-teen self-absorption, the president was asked about whether CIA chief John Brennan had lied to Congress under oath when he said that the agency had never spied on senators and staff who were investigating the CIA’s enhanced interrogations of a very few al Qaeda terrorists. Obama glided past the actual question, other than voicing

The United Nations slammed Israel for possibly committing war crimes in its fight against Hamas — and then backed that accusation by suggesting the Jewish nation ought to be sharing its Iron Dome defensive technology with the very terror group it’s fighting. U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay said to members of the media at an “emergency” meeting of the U.N. Human Rights Council that Israel was falling short in its duty to protect citizens in the Gaza Strip from getting killed by its rockets. “There is a strong possibility that international law has been violated, in a

Even the American left is finally realizing that this is the strangest administration in living memory. Obama simply has no real precedents, which is why he seems so utterly foreign. American presidents tend to be pragmatists, but Obama is locked into a simpleminded ideology of Good vs. Evil. Obama is Good, and anybody who disagrees with him is Evil. Much of this oddity stems from the president’s personality, which many people have described as a mix of major narcissism, borderline personality disorder, and oppositional defiant disorder. Personality disordered people can be very functional in their jobs.

Marino struck a nerve by pointing out that the Democrats owned the entire Congress and White House for two years and did nothing about illegal immigration. Nancy Pelosi then crept up on Marino and began taunting him. Rep. Nita Lowey, D-N.Y., said it best: “What is she

Someone we liked lost a primary. Someone we didn’t won. Some piece of legislation we hate passed; some other piece we liked did not. No one is completely happy, but we all know things can get much worse – and
