As I See It: President Barack Obama
on the economy and Congress

Kansas City Star (MO), by Barack 0bama

Original Article

A few days ago, I visited Kansas City to say a few words about our economy and meet with folks who wrote me letters -- and I snuck in some good barbeque, too. On Friday, we learned that our economy added about 200,000 jobs in July. Our private sector has added 9.9 million jobs over the last 53 months, the longest streak of private-sector job creation in our country’s history. Companies are investing. Consumers are spending. And for the first time in more than a decade, business leaders around the world have declared that the world’s number one place to invest

At first I thought this was a parody, packing in all the usual vapid Obama-speak: So completely out of touch with a world that is burning, agencies being led by incmpetent politcal hacks, and a nation that is being invaded by unlawful entrants. Then I realized this is from the President of the United States, whose lack of comprehension is astonishing and terrifying. He is our national teenage son, who needs to be shaken and lectured: Wake up, get to work, take a hard look at yourself, stop trying to be cute, and quit blaming others for your lousy grades. It´s time to be a man.

He did not mention the large increases in the cost of gasoline, fuel, food (bought any bacon lately?), college tuition, and health insurance. The increase in insurance alone is enough to sink the budget of most families. Then they have to pay the deductibles and co-pays. And he did not mention anything about shutting down the coal industry and throwing all those miners out of jobs. And not a word about all those illegals pouring across the border. And he forgot to share his latest golf score.

- Obama faults Repubs for not funding "English no is my language" courses for 350,000 non-English speaking undocumented teens in public schools. "It´s not their fault that they can´t speak, write or read English. They can´t even read & write in Spanish" Obama told Univision.

- Obama criticizes Cruz for opposing WH proposal to allow non-English speaking illegals to be air traffic controllers, IRS auditors, FBI agents and military commanders. Ever get the sense that the middle class is downwardly mobile, being pressed to the floor and squeezed to the limit? It’s not happening by accident. Someone is doing the squeezing: a new class of entertainment and tech plutocrats, cheered on and abetted by a priesthood of media, government and academic elites.(snip) This New Class, for instance, venerates the city and despises suburbia. They think you should feel the same way — and in innumerable magazine and newspaper pieces, they twist facts to make it sound as if America loves living in apartments and taking trains to work.

Ginsburg, at 81, is the oldest member of the Court. Some on the left have suggested that she might retire while Obama is in office, to guarantee that a Democratic president could appoint her successor. Ginsburg has said before that she is "likely to remain for a while," but offered insight on her reasoning in an interview with Elle magazine. "[A]nybody who thinks that if I step

Hundreds of environmentalists plan to "shut down" the New York Stock Exchange later Tuesday to protest the relationship between global warming and Big Business. Scores of protesters had already gathered in lower Manhattan early Tuesday for an event dubbed #FloodWallStreet. They planned to march a few blocks north to Wall Street and stage a "sit-in" until forced to leave. Their beef: the fossil fuels industry and other companies are profiting at the expense of the environment. The activists said they were willing to be arrested to drive home the link between global capitalism and worsening climate change.

President Barack Obama, stumping for the Democrats ahead of November´s congressional elections, has twice invoked Ronald Reagan´s seminal campaign question: "Are you better off than you were four years ago?" Framing the debate like that helped Reagan twice - in 1980 when he beat incumbent Jimmy Carter, and then again in 1984 when he won re-election during an economic upswing. But a similar message has failed to resonate for Obama primarily for one reason: while he stresses the economy has improved in almost every aspect on his watch, average family incomes have slipped. We’re being had. Again. For six years, President Obama has endeavored to will the country into accepting two pillars of his alternative national-security reality. First, he claims to have dealt decisively with the terrorist threat, rendering it a disparate series of ragtag jayvees. Second, he asserts that the threat is unrelated to Islam, which is innately peaceful, moderate, and opposed to the wanton “violent extremists” who purport to act in its name. When the U.S. military strikes, its leaders often choose colorful code names for the operation that sometimes stick in history, like Operation Overlord or Rolling Thunder or Desert Storm. Not this time. The U.S.-led air campaign against the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria doesn´t have a name. "I know of no plans at this point to name it," Pentagon spokesman Rear Adm. Political pollsters have a tough job. They have to create formulas to determine if the person they are interviewing is likely to vote, and it is within this calculation that their reputations are made. Typically, those who are likely to vote in an off-year election are pretty set. They are the people who always vote in elections — with some motivated by specific issues. In a wave election, the number of those motivated by specific issues escalates, changing the electoral landscape as the candidates who are beneficiaries of this increased participation sweep to victory. The 2014 election is rapidly looking like something new
