Put Down the Cupcake: New
Ban Hits School Bake Sales

Wall Street Journal, by Stephanie Armour

At Chapman School in Nebraska, resourceful students hawk pizza and cookie dough to raise money for school supplies, field trips and an eighth-grade excursion to Washington. They peddle chocolate bars to help fund the yearbook. But the sales won´t be so sweet starting this fall. Campus bake sales—a mainstay of school fundraisers—are going on a diet. A federal law that aims to curb childhood obesity means that, in dozens of states, bake sales must adhere to nutrition requirements that could replace cupcakes and brownies with fruit cups and granola bars. I am sick to death of bans and mandates from the Marxist government. It´s long past time that Americans woke up and pushed back really hard!!

Think this is bad? Just the start. By accepting federal money state and local officials invited these thugs in. At what point is it more cost effective to refuse the federal education money?

I assume the ban can only be applied to items sold on school grounds so sell them elsewhere. Just spread the word as to where they are being sold.

There are more calories in an average granola bar than in an average cupcake. That being said, however, this good food / bad food stuff needs to stop. The government should not be the arbiter of what I buy, what I sell, what I eat, and what I don´t eat. Our country has turned into Hotel California. We are all just prisoners here of our own device.

It is NOT a federal law. It was not passed by Congress and signed by the President.
It is a federal regulation issued by non-elected unaccountable Federal agency.
Schools can tell the Feds to stuff it, but not if they want to receive their federal funding for school meals.
They should still tell the Feds to stuff it, and sue them to get their funding, which is derived from their own taxes

When they have a dinner at the White House do they adhere to nutritional guidelines as outlined by Michelle Obama? DO the food police examine every item that is going to be served and publish the calories, sodium, carbohydrates etc on the items served? OR at the White House they are allowed to be guttons and everyone else must suspend enjoying a cupcake made by a Mom?

Once again, the comments reveal how many commenters did not read the article. If those commenters had gotten past the sensational intro paragraphs, they would have observed:

The law also . . . allowed for "infrequent" fundraisers, and STATES were allowed to decide how many bake sales they would have that DIDN´T meet nutrition standards.

Without STATE-approved exemptions, any treats sold would have to meet calorie, sodium, fat and other requirements. The law permits STATES to FINE schools that don´t comply.

. . .

Each STATE can mandate the number of daytime fundraisers held each year that BUCK the nutrition requirements. But so far, 32 STATES have OPTED to stay strictly in the healthy zone . . . .

(Emphasis mine)

Why are most STATES falling in line with the Federal government? So they can enrich their coffers with FINES?

Why were children growing up in the 30´s to the 70´s not obese? Why is there such an obesity problem today and not back then?

1. There were fewer people on food stamps who eat junk. Junk food is cheap and requires no preparation. Lazy parents make for lazy kids.

2. Children today are not riding bicycles, running, playing, jumping, swimming and participating in sports nearly as much. Remember the mandatory Phys Ed classes we had?

3. Children are sitting slack-jawed all day with their computers, iPads, iPhones and have become sedentary.

Junk food, which in my opinion is great stuff like fries, chips, burgers, hot dogs with "the works", grilled ham and cheese sandwiches, poutine, and deep-fried-anything has always been available, but only lately is there a childhood obesity problem.

It isn´t the food, it´s the culture. But it´s a good excuse for the government to get involved in private lives in yet another way.

I remember Devil Dogs, Hostess cupcakes with chocolate icing and that white icing swirl, Sky Bars, ice cream sodas, Bonomo Turkish Taffy (vanilla), Frozen Chocolate Covered Bananas on a stick, Ice Cream Sandwiches, marshmallows, Rollettes, buttered popcorn, Twinkies, sugary sodas, Kool-Aid, and scores of other junk foods I no longer have a desire. We didn´t get fat as kids because we were physically active like kids should be.

Kids are fat today because they are permitted to sit on their lazy arses and get fat. (This doesn´t apply to children with hormone or endocrine problems.)

If the gov´t wanted to address the childhood obesity problem sensibly, they would emphasize exercise, not fat and calorie restriction.

Michelle´s food program wastes millions of dollars because kids won´t eat the crap she wants kids to eat. When did she become Food Czarina?

michelle obama is NOT an elected official, why are there federal laws being passed on state run entities, on her behalf?

" to raise money for school supplies, field trips and an eighth-grade excursion to Washington. " Once again this is going to mean that a majority of these kids will not be getting their supplies, or go on field trips, get new band or sports equipment or go to Washington to see how the democrats ruin everything.

Just as with the school lunch program, those schools who opted out and got cut out of federal money for the school lunch program, make MORE $$ now, even with the loss of the fed money. Why, because the kids are not throwing her garbage for food into the trash and still going home hungry.

Yet, she cannot even control her own family, while her husband chomps down hamburgers and slurpees in public. She herself got caught eating hamburgers french fries and fat cakes (that is what they are called) in Botswana.

So, the king and queen of America does not have to live by their own rules and standards just the rest of the servants.

It was once said, “religion is designed to comfort the afflicted and to afflict the comfortable.” Jesus’ parables – short stories with moral lessons – were likewise designed to afflict, to draw us in but leave us uncomfortable. These teachings can be read as being about divine love and salvation, sure. But, their first listeners – first century Jews in Galilee and Judea – heard much more challenging messages. Only when we hear the parables as Jesus’ own audience did can we fully experience their power and find ourselves surprised and challenged today. Here are four examples of Jesus’ teachings that everybody gets wrong: 1.

The man who jumped the White House railing Sept. 19 deserves the right to live in President Barack Obama’s home, just as the president is allowing hundreds of thousands of border-jumping Central Americans to live in Americans’ homeland, says a new tongue-in-cheek petition posted at the White House website. “We urge President Obama to immediately and publicly recognize that Mr. Omar J. Gonzalez, an oppressed migrant, was merely looking for a better life when he entered the White House after going over the classist, divisive and needless fence,” says the petition, which was authored by D.A. Note: Read the Hillary Clinton-Saul Alinsky Letters here. Previously unpublished correspondence between Hillary Clinton and the late left-wing organizer Saul Alinsky reveal new details about her relationship with the controversial Chicago activist and shed light on her early ideological development. Clinton met with Alinsky several times in 1968 while writing a Wellesley college thesis about his theory of community organizing. Clinton’s relationship with Alinsky, and her support for his philosophy, continued for several years after she entered Yale law school in 1969, two letters obtained by the Washington Free Beacon show. When Anthony Weiner’s mayoral campaign imploded last year amid new sexting revelations, the fallout buffeted his wife, longtime Hillary Clinton aide Huma Abedin. Clinton’s inner circle was furious with Weiner, and Abedin’s role with Hillary was said to be in doubt. “Huma has a choice to make,” New York magazine quoted a “close associate” of Abedin’s as saying. “Does she go with Anthony, or does she go with Hillary?” The magazine described Abedin as “traumatized” by the prospect of leaving the inner sanctum. He was a leading figure in one of the biggest climate change marches to date. But it seems Robert F Kennedy Jr was not so forthcoming when it came to questions about his own carbon footprint. Confronted by a reporter asking if he would give up his phone and car, the environmental lawyer became visibly irate before grabbing the microphone and accusing her of ´destroying democracy´ as a member of the press. The interview in New York yesterday afternoon started with a conversation about the number of flyers produced for the event, which Kennedy Jr claimed was necessary to garner ´people power´.

The forecast is for people, and lots of them. The People’s Climate March is expected to bring more than 100,000 people who want to save the planet to the city Sunday. The march to address climate change, billed as the largest in history, is occurring two days before President Obama and world leaders attend a summit dealing with the same issue at the United Nations. U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon — who has fought passionately against global warming — along with celebrities, CEOs and activists are expected to descend on the city for the massive event.
